Help Please help Touch won't work on Screen

Unfortunately its not rooted, so no clockwork mod, this was something i had been looking into on here and xda only the week before. Just not had the time to learn the new stuff with android yet as i had before with WM and symbian or even in the early days of modding on sony j70's and z7 series..sigh.

Its just that i noticed in recovery mode there is an option to apply update from sd card and wondered whether that might be useful, meaning could it be used without wiping.
---------------
yes its still under warranty so 18months left so they will fix it but htc told me that even if they tell them not to wipe it they may do so anyway. i'm tempted to do the 2and half hour drive to their offices to make sure they dont!

I found a place that would replace the digitiser for

Yeah, in order to be able to flash an update.zip from a stock recovery/bootloader, it would have to be signed by HTC...hence, the need for a custom recovery that doesn't enforce the checking of that particular signature.

Maybe there's actually just a loose connection somewhere related to digitizer... I didn't want to suggest you opening the phone up yourself, but I've seen other teardowns of phones on YouTube and the like...seems like a last resort kind of deal and maybe better left to folks who have done it before...

Let us know what you decide and/or find out.

Best of luck to you!

but if one had a stock file would it flash and wipe or just update and save data as an update might from froyo to gingerbread?
if so can one try with a stock file, are they downloadable?

I have considered it could be a loose connection, but wouldn't opening it up invalidate the warranty?

I'm pretty positive the way HTC do things, it would wipe. The PD98IMG.zip used in the downgrade process wipes and rewrites all of the phones internal partitions along with flashing a new radio. There are RUU's (ROM Upgrade Utilities) here, but I'm pretty sure they also wipe and if you're on GB, you can't use one to downgrade.

Here's a vid on taking it apart if you fancy it?

HTC Desire HD Disassembly Video - YouTube

The Ace is just HTC's internal name for it.

Well, I don't know for sure about just re-flashing an update.zip (i.e., the update.zip that you got to take you from Froyo to GB). There's usually asserts in the update.zip to see what version you are on, so it might not install anyway. I know that the update.zip files that I've received OTA usually don't try to wipe (hence the "update" reference I guess). If we could identify the update.zip (it won't be called that for download purposes, you'd have to rename the file to that before trying to install), we could certainly look in the updater-script to see if it contains any delete or format commands.

As far as opening-up the phone, you are probably right as far as the warranty goes...

Cheers!

Okay, I downloaded the following GB update.zip file

OTA_Ace_Gingerbread_S_TELUS_WWE_2.43.661.1_R-1.84.661.1_R_release_194023aok9iw7hmtj4lilk.zip

for the Desire HD from this site:

Download Telus HTC Desire HD Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update | Android Total

just to have a look at some of the stuff we discussed above.

I don't know what carrier you have, lucids, but it probably doesn't matter too much for what I was looking for. Note: these files are obviously very carrier and version specific, so I'm not making any statement that this is the proper update.zip file for you.

Anyway, I didn't / don't see any format commands inside the updater-script file (which is good). I also didn't see too many delete commands related to the /data filesystem/partition (which is also good). So, it doesn't really look like the update.zip file would wipe your data setup.

There are, however, asserts at the beginning that might keep you from installing if you weren't coming from the specific versions of Android listed below:

Code:
assert(file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") ==
       "telus_wwe/htc_ace/ace/ace:2.2.1/FRG83D/325797:user/release-keys" ||

       file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") ==
       "telus_wwe/htc_ace/ace:2.3.3/GRI40/70542:user/release-keys");

Anyway, that's a little more information for you...hope that helps.

Cheers!

I know I have GB 2.33 and the phone was purchased outright as sim free so is totally unbranded and nt locked to any carrier via sim or branding, if that helps. so would have the generic update for uk i guess.

The disclaimer they want you to agree yo is that they reflash "after" they repair, which i won't sign. HTC manager agreed it was ok to request the engineers to not do this, but as I said they outsource repairs to Regenesis so i hope to try contact them monday morning.

LOL, I followed the first link you posted (wasn't Chinese for me), but the non-RUU link was bad / old / broken / unavailable. The link referenced in the given XDA page didn't work either, but I Google searched the referenced filename and count the same multiupload link you provided, EP and I'm downloading it now (246MB...oops...first download failed after 34.3 MB...grrr...trying again).

Caution, the RUU links referenced will certainly wipe your phone, so I'd avoid those guys.

If the download works / finishes, I'll take a look at see what the updater-script contains.

Cheers!

Well, the file is not an update.zip type of file. The filename I downloaded was this:

Code:
PD98IMG_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed (1).zip

and contains this:

HTC Desire HD PD98IMG.jpg

so I'm guessing that it'll wipe / replace everything on your phone. I think this is right and matches what I remember: if you take the OTA update, your data doesn't get nuked, but if you install via a file loaded on you SD card, well, you know...

Not sure what to suggest at this point...

Ah well was worth a look, and if thats a file that would wipe no point in trying. c'est la vie.

I'm not up to speed on the different flash files. but if i knew what to look for i'm sure i could find it.

Phone went back to HTC service on Monday, they've been very good, had a call back earlier that they fitted new digitizer & LCD (seems they always replace both).

Will find out tomorrow morning if the touch screen works again and i can get into the phone.

Nice to see that some manufacturers/service agents are still willing to be flexible and accommodate the customers needs.

fingers crossed that it works now and i can get my data.

Will do, they said they only took over doing HTC from April so aim to do a good job. They quite rightly have a stringent Quality Assurance regime which is right and proper, but I am glad that in this circumstance they are able to realise that it isn't appropriate in all circumstances, and all credit to them for their flexibility.

Just hope it's worth it. ;)

While doing my research i did find some alternate phone service who were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. fonefunshop.biz they can change the digitiser for about

Well I just got a call from Regenersis and the screen is now working and responsive again. Obviously it is still locked so they couldn't access it or do the normal testing (involving flashing) that they generally would but it now gives me the opportunity to rescue data.

Will post back when i get it, but just wanted again to thank everyone here who has helped and to the service guys at the above company who repair on behalf of HTC who went out of their way to help and fix the phone without wiping my data.

:D:D

Well I just got the phone back and the touch screen works and all my data is present as it was before the hardware failed. Though apparently i have travelled back to 1980, so the phone has some new time travel functionality which i am sure to have fun with. ;)

They fitted a new LCD & digitiser and I can't help but notice that the responsiveness to touch on the screen is a world apart from what it was before, it really is so much better. Not that it was bad before mind but it must either be a modified part or there is a responsiveness setting that is turned right up.

Once again thanks to all helpers on here and the techs @ Regerersis who fixed the phone.

:D:D:D

That's awesome and excellent news, lucids!

Kind of makes you think that the digitizer was a little wonky all along.

Glad you are back up and running and didn't loose your data.

Keep in touch, mate--it was a real pleasure getting to know you and work on this problem.

Cheers!

Indeed and you :-) and thanks again, now just checking my settings and sure as sh*t my settings/accounts and sync/google

were set to sync contacts, gmail and calender but all i see in gmail -contacts is:
my contacts (8)
bump identity (1)
starred in android -none
most contacted (20)
other contacts (99)

Now bear in mind the phone alone as almost 700
if u add gmail and facebook its nearly a 1000 so why wont it sync them hmmmm
I just did a sync now and no they dont appear..!!

this is interesting maybe this is it:

Application-specific passwords

An application-specific password can only be created when you are signed up for 2-step verification.
Some applications that work outside a browser aren't yet compatible with 2-step verification and cannot ask for verification codes, for example:

  • Android devices
  • Google Voice mobile application on iPhone
  • Mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook
  • Chat clients such as Google Talk or AIM
To use these applications, you first need to generate an application-specific password. Next, enter that in the password field of your application instead of your regular password. You can create a new application-specific password for each application that needs one.

On android there are three types of contact, 'Phone', 'SIM' and 'Google. As you'd imagine, only the google contacts are synchronized to your gmail account. Sounds like most of yours are the phone type of contact.

Your best bet is to export them from your phone (as a .csv) and import that file into the gmail web page. Then they'll filter back to your phone as google contacts.

I think there might be the option to export them built into the HTC contacts app, I'm not sure.

yes you're right most are phone
ok i see i was under the impression it synced up those as well. that explains a lot.

While on that tip i'm still wondering why the calendar won't sync...
I'll have to examine the dashboard settings closely

No i must have switched it off, its on for sure now though.

for the life of me the calendar won't sync even though it is set to on the phone sigh :(

Contacts all backed up now though :p

Hey, lucids and co.!

I've been following another thread by one of our Guides with a goobered-up Droid X screen (http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/423347-broken-screen-need-see.html#post3284367).

Anyway, there was a mention of an app for gaining screen control even without root:

Otiose Banter: Android Screen Control Without Root

They cover the app's shortcomings above and also references this:

androidscreencast - Desktop app to control an android device remotely - Google Project Hosting

which seems to work better than the first app.

Anyway, though you all should know and they might come in handy for others, too.

Cheers!

Tested it out (unrooted version) and seems to work though needs some fixes...

Scrolling needs enabling or when one goes to your apps you only see the 1st page. And there are screen sixe issues in that it fills the whole screen vertically and can't be made smaller. Other than that seems to work ok.

cool little tool
;)
