Root [How To] Return To Gingerbread And S-on

Ok, I'm a little stumped. Gonna have to ask you to verify MD5. I know you downloaded it a second time but we need to rule this out. Instructions for this are in post #2 of this thread, the comparison MD5 is listed in the OP. We must rule out an issue with the file(s).

And you had adequate battery life when starting all this I assume?

Although you shouldn't NEED to do this, I wonder what would happen if you tried a factory reset from within hboot? Maybe try that first even though you should have just had the world's most complete reset by doing this procedure. May as well rule things out one by one before we move further.

Here's my concern about flashing CWM...I think we can get that done ok but I'm not 100% sure about actually doing much with it without Superuser? I'm guessing it wouldn't allow you to wipe data/cache since typically access to them requires root.

So usually, you can go to the market and get Superuser but not in this case. Also, you can push it with ADB but I don't think that'll work since you're limited to hboot. You may however be able to do so using using fastboot. Thoughts?

Yes, plenty of power. I just tried the factory reset from HBOOT and flashed again, same boot loop. I'm sorry, thanks for your help so far.

So the factory reset ran ok though? Did you just try to boot it directly after that without running the file?

Yes, factory reset ran without issue. It boots directly after and goes into the same loop. I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but when it loops, it doesn't go to the HTC Incredible screen, but to the HTC "Quietly Brilliant" screen. At this point, what are the chances I could take this back to the Verizon store and get a replacement or will they be wise to my game (I guess I should fix the S-OFF first)?

Other than that, it may be worth it to flash cwm and superuser, and then try installing a rom...

That's the only thing I have left too. Like I said above though, how are we going to get him Superuser without boot? ADB won't push through hboot will it or am I remembering that wrong? Would he be able to even wipe data/cache/dalvik and just forget the rom flash at first or would that fail too do to lack of SU?

Superuser is flashable in clockwork... but I've personally never done it, so I don't know if it requires a boot up to take effect.

I *think* clockwork commands work without superuser anyway.

I think all roms come with superuser anyway, so flashing a rom would also install it.

So long as the phone allows access to the various paritions without Superuser in place it could work. Only one way to find out BenRad...

Go here:
Inc. Recoveries | doug piston

Load up CWM, I'm suggesting 3.0.0.8. Make sure it's named to PB31IMG just like before. Get the other one off the card first, then put the CWM recovery on the card and load through hboot. Once you get that done, reboot. Assuming it'll loop again so then pull battery and go to hboot, go to recovery which should then be CWM. I think the first thing you should do is just wipe data/cache and dalvik cache (under advanced menu in CWM), then reboot to system. Maybe the CWM wipe will be more effective.

If that doesn't cut it, we try loading a rom. How's that plan sound sdrawkcab, worth a shot?

Well, I was able to get the phone up and running again by flashing cm7. It's having a couple hiccups right now, but it's getting there. Thank you, iowa and sdrawk, for your help.

Bleh, now cm7 is acting up.

Well, it's a step up... your situation sounds similar to one I had some months back (I couldn't boot into any sense roms). After a week of messing with it, I ended up returning it for a refurb.

After leaving the battery out overnight, it's still a bit of a mess (random reboots). I think I'll try getting it back to somewhat working stock (like yesterday) and take it back over to the Verizon store.

Does this method work for the OLED version of the incredible? I have the OLED version and I do not want to mess up my phone by using a method for the SLCD version.

The reason I am doing this is because have the boothang problem with the cyanogen mod, so I can't boot up, also clockwork mod revovery will not work either, it just gets stuck at the clockwork mod logo. So this is basically the only hope for my phone, can I put the file on my SD card with a card reader? Because I can not set it to disk drive mode? Because it will not boot up.

No problem with using on your phone and yes you can use the card reader to place the file there and format the card to FAT32 for that matter if you haven't already. BUT...before you do this, can I ask about Clockwork? You saying you select recovery from hboot and it instantly goes to a logo or you're trying to make a selection once in Clockwork and then you get the logo?

When I select the recovery option from HBOOT, it goes into the clockworkmod recovery screen and will let me select any of the options there, but none of the options work, they just get stuck on the clockwork logo.

In hboot, you use the power button to select items. However in Clockwork you use the trackpad button to make selections. The power button brings you backward one menu in CWM. If you use the power button on the main menu, it will bring up the logo you're talking about. So I think you're fine. I would recommend doing a full wipe of data/cache/ and dalvik cache (under advanced menu), then reload the rom from scratch. If you don't typically use CWM to load roms the steps are:

1.)wipe data (factory reset)
2.)wipe cache partition
3.)wipe dalvik
4.)install zip from SD card
5.)choose zip from SD card

Now navigate to the rom on the SD card (you may need to place on there if not already present). Select the rom and flash.

6.)reboot to system

Thanks a lot! I just didint know you used the trackball in clockwork mod stupid me :/ so I should just do a factory reset from clockwork? Or can I fix this without doing a completed reset?

Doubtful that it will get repaired without the full wipe and reloading CM7 from scratch. However, you can try to just wipe cache/dalvik cache and see if that works. If it's still acting up, then do the full wipe using the steps I laid out earlier. If you have titanium backup or a similar app, you can restore apps or apps + app data and save a ton of time. All you'll have to set up again are the usual system settings and cyanogen settings.
