Root [How To] Return To Gingerbread And S-on

Right before it crashed and started boot looping

This is a little strange but eventually, we will fix it. Sorry it's being such a pain for you. Ok so you've been using the PB31IMG method I'm guessing right? Let's have you try the RUU method in the OP. You down for that? It just feels like one or more of the partitions isn't getting wiped right during the flash.

You might try a factory reset first (from hboot) but I'm not super hopeful it will cure all.

I actually just ran your RUU that you just added to the OP. It's cool, hope I can just get it fixed since it's already been sold. I'll try whatever you suggest.

Ok, so to be clear, you've now run both the newly added PB31IMG and you've also done the RUU from your PC and still no love?

If that doesn't work, I have half a mind to tell you to go back to Froyo. However, that is what you originally did on this thread before the files were updated today. And it sounds like you were having the same sort of scenario on 2.2 also is that right?

I guess I ran whatever files you had posted on here earlier...and some other ones I found :/ haha

Ok, go to hboot, select recovery. When you get the red triangle pic, press volume UP and the power button to see factory recovery options. Let me know what options you have there, I can't remember how they're worded.

Edit: forget it. After more thought, go to the next post.

Here's the thing...this phone is playing hardball more than any I've seen. So I am going to recommend an idea I've never tried before. Therefore, attempt at your own risk. If you decide not to go this route, that's cool but my final suggestion, in advance, is going to be to flash Clockwork back and get rooted again, then flash a rom.

So my first idea though is this:

Flash clockwork 5.0.2.0 from here:
Recoveries | PvilleComp's

Make sure the MD5 checks out, then make sure you have all other PB31IMG files off your card. Then rename this one PB31IMG and place onto the card. Go to hboot and load the file as you've done before. This one will be short and sweet, that's normal.

Now, reboot the phone. Once it's booted up pull the battery, then replace. Now get rid of the PB31IMG from the card. Next go back to hboot and go into recovery. Should be Clockworkmod recovery now. (Good thing you kept s-off)

Now do all of these things in the Clockwork menu:

Main Screen:
wipe data/factory reset - x2 (twice in a row)
wipe cache partition - x2

Advanced:
Wipe Dalvik Cache - x2

Mounts and Storage:
Format-
/boot - x2
/system - x2
/datadata - x2
/data - x2
/cache - x2

Now, this is the part I've never tried. I'm going to tell you to not load anything. Instead, select the option to reboot to system if it will allow you to do so. If you don't see it, press the power button to go backward one or more menus until you do. Wait for the phone to reboot, it should fall on it's face and not get past the splash screen if it even makes it that far.

Now pull the battery. Place the 2.3.4 PB31IMG file back onto the SD card from the OP of this thread. Use the volume down + power button to enter hboot and let the file load. Hopefully with a full wipe of everything, and a reformat of the partitions, it'll apply the update without all the side effects this time.

If you feel uncomforable with the above, then my other plan would be this:

http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/420788-how-regain-root-s-off.html

Basically the same thing as plan 1 excpet this time, you're going to add Superuser and get full root rights back. Then you'd do all the wipes I mentioned above but instead of rebooting at that point, flash a rom instead and see if your stability comes back with a wiped but rooted phone on a rom. If the answer to that question is YES, then you can try downgrading again back to stock. It seems to me, something occured to eff up one or more of your partitions somewhere along the way and it's not allowing a proper wipe/load during the unroot procedure.

Pick your poison and I wish you the best. I'll be around to see how this goes.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. I'll try your suggestions later tonight and I'm going out of town for the weekend but I'll report back by Monday night.

I did everything exactly like you said, but when I go to format /data it says "error formatting /data!"

It says it formatted data when I did the factory reset though....? hmphhh

Edit:

Also gives same error when I try to format cache "error formatting /cache!"

I tried 10 times for each :/

After formatting mounts, or trying to....I rebooted the system and it boots directly into fastboot it looks like. No recovery option though.

You are sharp. I've posted that link several times here but haven't been through it in a long time. It's doable though as a last resort. You have ADB and know how to use it?

Is the file loading in hboot?

I formatted the sd card to be sure and am in hboot right now.

I don't know how to use ADB :/ I could try and read up on it, or if you wanted to remotely connect to my computer, you could try.

I know a lot of the guys don't take money, but I'd pay for for your time and help so lmk.
