***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

It's beyond my level of technological understanding but I believe if the Nexus is unlockable this Google Wallet/NFT will pose a HUGE security problem. Banking and credit card info on an unlocked handset? The lawsuits Verizon could face with stolen identity's etc etc. Verizon must know this. .

Despite the device being unlocked by the consumer the consumer can easily go back to stock and claim their identity or banking info had been stolen etc etc

........this subject is above my pay grade but it makes sense to me

What are people making of the news that Verizon's g-nex MAP shows up for 11/10? Could it be that best buy gets an exclusive launch for a week or two, which is why verizon is so mad; they don't get it until the same day as the RAZR launches, which means they lose all sales to g-nex early adopters. That's my theory anyway, maybe Steven can ask his source if it will still be available to us on 11/3....or I could just wait for Tuesday ;)

This kind of thing was hinted at in the source's PM's with me, but nothing specific. As I understand it, this type of specific could probably be traced back to the source and get the source in deep doo doo.

Yeah, I'm signing us all up for a support group. We can do it online in a forum! :p (I crack myself up)

Ugh, there's a sad truth in there.

Steve,
Is that rumor true that the top 10 posters will get a $100.00 discount when the Nexus is release?;)

Why not? Arguably we've helped build this thread and generated lots and lots of advertising page views (you're welcome AF!), so why shouldn't we get something back? $100 sounds about right to me. :D

Look who's number two now! :) :)

Nice job Steven, and that's even after deleting your own post to snag 9000!

Looks like we're still accelerating despite that "slump" a day or two ago (they're all blurring together, is that bad :p)

By the way, all of my posts except one or two were made in this thread...

Does the Nexus S have any problems? Why would it be a problem? I can't imagine they are storing your info in an unencrypted form. It is not like a .txt file with yout CC number ready to read and transmitted.

no sir but it's going to be taking off and with the popularity of Android it could just be a matter of time before some savy hackers figure out how to get that info off an unlocked device with NFT. I mean there are apps that can get access to some of your info why not sensitive info.

By the time anyone figures it out it's too late. Market is not regulated very strictly

I'm just sort of brainstorming here........

In theory that makes sense, but I have two problems with it:

1) No reports of this from Nexus S. It would seem that there would be at least one dev who thought of this and tried it if it were possible.

2) Unlocking the phone does not mean you have every encryption key to all apps. If the wallet app encrypts its data (which I would bet that it would), then I see little problem unless the key is stored unsafely or is otherwise widely known. Since I am betting the key will be some combination of your google password and (if they want to get fancy) a device specific value to prevent any type of device cloning.

3) I would equate this to your google password. I rooted my phone. I used my google password to use the phone. That does not mean that my password is in any way compromised.

I'm a big-time modder and this info is a downer, which makes YOU a bigtime KILLJOY! :p

Well guess what... 100% of my posts are on this thread... haha.

I've been lurking here for about a week and finally made a profile yesterday. Can't wait for the NP, I've been stuck with this damn Iphone 3G. All this new (although, never enough) information everyday is exciting!

Thank you all for the discussion and interesting posts, its been keepin me busy. Anyway- hello.

Very Good points. We are moving into some interesting times with the NFT and I'm just struggling with the whole thing of Banks and carriers knowing that some very sensitive info could be stored on an unsecured device.

I mean Verizon is well aware of the practice of unlocking/rooting the phones. This could be a MAJOR concern of theirs with Google Wallet. I'm just trying to think like Big Red.....

While unlockable, you can't get past the coded ESN, which I believe some of the encryption algoritim is based on. It uses a variety of data, and user info is only one of them. So at least the way my limited understanding is.

No, don't think it's a technical issue, but more contractural and business related.

And you're soooooo close to beating iowabowtech and dmiller2007. :)

Unacceptable. I'm on a hunting trip right now. Barely have coverage. The whole outfit appears to be in shambles and I'm still not sure what's up because I can only get every 5th page to load. Need a chiefesque nutshell post to get back in the loop.

mind is spinning on trying to figure out why at the 11th hour Verizon is making such a big deal about Google Wallet besides Isis.

I'm thinking it just may be a security concern. Not like we have been quiet about unlocking this phone :) and lets face it the hype on this thing has been truly epic. Somebody somewhere has got to be watching

Support Group? Please! This Abysmal Purgatory-like waiting in a state of uncertainty since the Bionic is breaking through my sanity. The Pain..... Oh, The Pain.....

ok that answers part of my question. The other one was if the infighting between google and verizon was over ISIS/Wallet or something else.

I agree. Probably 100 of my posts were from my phone on 1X service. You know how hard is to keep up with you people on 1X? I'll tell you, really hard lol I'll get the PC tethered on 3G tomorrow and you'll know so much about the nexus that you'll feel like you already had it for 2 years and are ready to upgrade :p

Sorta. My guess is you go below that and it's still dim as you start blowing out pixels after too short a time. Would be curious the brightness/life trade off being made just between the 5.3" 720p Note and this 4.65" 720p Nexus. Also if it's auto brightness is dimmer than some of us wish, how long will the display last if we hack in a brighter setup before the blues get too weak and everything starts to look red/green instead bluish like when these are new?

Oh yes. I didn't quite word that properly. I'm sure that they physically could print them smaller, the tech just isn't there to make them viable at that size.

I'm also hoping that Samsung have made strides with their blue sp life - or else those always-on* soft keys are going to murder them.

Wait, what? Wouldn't that mean iPhone 4/4S would have awful screen longevity?

The iPhone uses an LCD screen. super AMOLED screens are, surprise, OLEDs. They function in a totally different manner. An LCD has a transparent color layer that a white backlight shines through.

In an OLED, the pixels themselves generate the light, which gives you phenomenal contrast, but basically also means they gradually burn out after a certain lifetime. Said lifetime is generally much longer than the expected lifetime of the phone though. :)

Yep, lotta things going on with this new tech that make you almost thankful your fancy device isn't gonna keep you happy more than a year or two as nicer ones arrive.
