***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

BlueBiker referring the TechCrunch's negative opinion of Galaxy Nexus's SAMOLED HD screen:

They haven't seen the phone yet, they're just guessing. Poorly in my opinion. I'll be astonished if the display doesn't look terrific to most people.

I'd say most will love it except perhaps the Apple fans who will champion their "Retina" screen to the end and people who think OLED screens over-exaggerate colors. Can't please everybody, I guess. Didn't Ricky Nelson sing "you can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself"? So I'll let people who won't like it be that way while bask in its glory.

Sure, I think that's a fair assessment. I'd ask yourself how often you use, in my example above, the world clock or the timer or the stopwatch...I only use my alarm clock from the Clock App. If I wanted a world clock, there are probably 1,000 of them in the market. I couldn't say a "ton" because I don't know how many of the functions you typically use...But you're definitely on the right track. You'll find the scrolling and speed of a launcher not named Rosie (like ADW Ex, for example), is WAY smoother and faster. It's just streamlined.

Sounds great to me. I'm flipping through some apps and stuff right now saying, nope, don't use that, nope, never touched that. And half the time, I've been using an app downloaded from the market instead of the stock anyway.

There's plenty of reasons why VZW wouldn't want Samsung/Google to announce it.

Maybe Verizon wants to announce it themselves? On their own schedule? So it doesn't conflict with their other upcoming launches? They did just announce a phone earlier that day.

They have an agenda and its quite likely Samsung/Google's timeline doesn't match with their timeline. So we wait...it's really not a big deal.

The Bionic was literally announced officially the day before it released.

And for the last time regarding the bootloader....THERE ARE PLENTY OF DEVICES ON VERIZON WITH UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS.

Not saying S/G should have been able to tell all details of launch so much as they should have been able to say VZW would be a US carrier in GENERAL. They weren't even allowed to say that though. They were HUSHED by VZW on even claiming VZW would eventually someday sell the phone.

I am still not sure on the bootloader thing. There are devices with UNLOCKABLE boot loaders and the Xoom was officially unlockable, but most others I think are locked and can be bypassed/unlocked somehow as they aren't encrypted and signed and such. This is different than an officially unlocked or unlockable BL. Moto RAZR is unlockable, EXCEPT on VZW and they said it was locked on VZW BECAUSE of VZW. Why would they allow it to be unlocked in Europe but not here opposite of OG if it wasn't VZW changing their lock requirements for the OEMs?

Exactly. Welcome to the dark side. Will you choose the red pill or the blue pill? Next step for you is rooting your phone to get rid of the junk...........

KINDA OFFICIAL NOTICE:

I sense the folks are on the warpath.. it usually happens this time of night for some reason. I don't mind dissent, but don't get personal. You see, I got this knife in my hand and Imma use it. :)

Steven

Nope, it was directed at all a yiz. :)

I'm sensing a bit of negativity here about prospects for a Verizon version of the phone. I know some of you probably had hopes dashed by Verizon before (Nexus One, e.g.) but let's try stay positive and believe that it's coming Verizon's awesome LTE network. I mean they're selling the iPhone with no VZ crapware, right? Let's give them another chance. I truly think it's coming to Verizon. I have no hard evidence of this but just a hunch. :) They need this phone!

I don't blame anyone for doubting or being mad at Verizon.
Verizon has been pretty sneaky this year.

1. No new after two.
2. tiered data.
3. throttled data.
4. sub par phones.
5. new add campaign that you will pay for via your data plan.

6. Do I need to go on?

I don't know, man. I've been hooked on these phones like crack for a while now, but I'm so OCD that I don't trust myself to root. I'm also such a visual learner that a picture would be a thousand words and it is hard to get that kind of help to root. So, I guess my next question to you is this...if I'm not a rooter, is this phone out of my league? Should I be an HTC guy?...I would have said RAZR guy, but I NEED MY EXTERNAL BATTERY CHARGERS!!!

OT: today I finally rooted and bloat free on my DX and only running launcher pro and LOVING IT!!!

Makes me even more excited for when GN finally gets here!

1-2) Good point
3) They have to
4) not true
5) we always pay for advertising.

you say these things like they're facts. how do you know that verizon doesn't want to be the one to announce it, on their terms, when they want to? Samsung and Google saying that it will be available on Verizon IS announcing it. Device announcements aren't something taken lightly. There is a lot of timing and planning that goes along with them. With the high-end devices verizon has coming out, i'm sure they have a very specific announcement/ launch schedule they're following. The Galaxy Nexus just isn't there hot ticket item at the moment. They probably have a big Droid campaign lined up for the RAZR (which they would prefer to sell) and announcing a nexus device would steal its thunder.

I'd say most will love it except perhaps the Apple fans who will champion their "Retina" screen to the end and people who think OLED screens over-exaggerate colors.

It's okay, not everybody has to prefer the same screens. And FWIW, there's a setting on OLED screens to turn down the color saturation if you prefer.

Here is another article that talks about the pentile screen on the GN
(Don't know if I'm allowed to post links)

Galaxy Nexus with curved 4.65" OLED display - FlatpanelsHD

Another thing to worry about?

A lot of the material in that article is true and well put. But there's one fundamental omission -- nowhere do they state that the Note is 5.3" versus the Nexus, which is 4.65". That alone will make the Nexus noticeably sharper.

Sure, in theory a non-PenTile display will be even sharper -- Retina territory -- but HD resolution is getting past the point where the majority of people will be able to tell the difference.

ok, after taking into account all of the information in regards to slideshows saying vzw and various places online saying vzw only later to retract... im going to give me best educated guess as to what exactly happened/is going on.

ok, when the initial unpacked event was scheduled for the 11th, i fully believe verizon would have been there and been mentioned had it taken place at that time, as evidenced by the verizon wireless pulldown notification bar being used in the promo and in slideshow presentation, that in all honesty was likely mistakenly left in after the problems arrived and vzw decided not to participate.

i also believe that something(whether it be ICS problems or LTE signal problems or whatever happaned) came up and they had to quickly scramble and change the launch plans to get things panned out with both the software/hardware/vzw and whatever else the issue was.

finally, i believe what wound up happening was sammy/google/vzw quickly resolved whatever the issue was(at least 90% of it), but google/sammy didnt want to wait until verizon thought it was a good idea to unveil(sometime well after the razr announcement to give it the spotlight for a while) and there is where the tension comes from now. Google/sammy didnt bow to vzw wishes that they wait even longer and give the razr the spotlight for a while, so in turn they are being very passe' about coming forth with information.

Currently, i believe that verizon is holding out hope that by not announcing the GN right away that the excitement will grow enough around the razr to let people convince themselves they want the razr, regardless of what other device comes out around that timeframe.

take that rant for what its worth, but after examining all the facts, i think this makes the most sense.

btw been meaning to ask you. you live in nebraska? just curious cuz im chillin here in omaha

not currently. Grew up in a small town north of GI (population 580), and went to UNL. Spent a TON of time in the 'Ha tho, and particlarly the bars... :) moved to Phx in 90, after college - couldn't take another winter!

They have been working hand and hand with them on this handset, its the most highly anticipated device of the year for tech heads, a huge event is planned with the tech world watching and they tell Samsung "dont you say or mention anything about us." "But what about your brand all over our marketing materials?" "No!! Shhhhh. Its to be kept secret"

That info would have come out no more than an hour after the event if Verizon was going to be an exclusive release partner. Or maybe im just crazy to think that.

Im still perplexed as to why nobody thought to ask the question "what US carrier is going to release the Nexus?"

In regards to the BL. I think so far its pretty obvious verizon was responsible for the RAZR being locked down due to the uk version being unlockable. What will be telling is if the Nexus gets released on the network and its unlocked. Motorola will have some heavy splainin to do. The Moto RAZR fans will burn down Motos FB and support forums and rightfully so.

[ So this is what I found out with the following bullets: So in summary, that VZ store knows less than we all do.]

And that actually surprises you why?

Nope, it makes you a perfect candidate. Won't have bloat and it will be virtually impossible to brick assuming the BL is indeed unlocked.

Yep. Welcome to my nightmare :-(

Verizon has been nothing but good to me. I have a family plan and have been their customer since 2002. They've bent over backwards for me by bending rules. I lost my xv6900 (HTC Touch) after three months. I didn't get insurance. They replaced it for me for the discounted price. They didn't have to that.

They've given me a free month of service once when I complained about their sales tactics once. I said, there's nothing you can do for me. The CSR said that there was. She made sure I left happy. She gave me a free month. I was surprised.

There several other things they did for me. I'm very appreciative. They've kept my business for sure. I'm loyal.

Steven

So they are worried about a developer phone with pretty much no marketing dollars behind it and with a very specific target market stealing thunder and cannibalizing sales from a device (RAZR) that will be so heavily marketed that our heads will spin.

Am I off on this assessment?

I appreciate loyalty. So, the question then becomes: gawd forbid the GNex doesn't come to vzw, what then - Razr, Rezound (i just threw up in my mouth a little, just typing that), or wait for the next greatest in '12???
