***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

The case was fine. Usual moto build. The thinness made the wideness feel weirder to me.

But man, it was really HOT.
I couldn't agree more, I picked it up (cold) at a store today and within 2-3min the thing was really hot. I didn't think the screen looked that bad compared to a Bionic.;)

I thought someone about 5000 or 1000 posts ago got the actual specsheets from TI, and mentioned that they list the 4430 as "up to 1.2ghz" at some point in this thread.

Or my memory is out to lunch still...

Nah - for the pics I get

Lol.

Even though it is slightly off topic it is still closer to the topic then 95% of my posts

I have been thanked in 69 different posts haha :D

hahahaha!

Obligatory that's what she said.

Arrested Development out of context reference.

I figured at least one of you would come back with that.

How I'm picturing the RAZR after reading these posts:

Waaaait a minute - the penny just dropped, the light just came on.

That's exactly the reason they put Kevlar on the back - to keep the heat from the hand.

And send it to someone's face.

Ok, Ytram is right - best to not bash the thing unless and until the facts are there.

Still tho - that tradeoff speaks volumes on their thinking.

Verizon and Moto have it all figured out. It's branding! If you see someone else with a giant rectangular burn on their cheek then you know they have a Razr too! Wow! The commercial even makes sense now. It could cut through all those things because it is soooo hot. Ok, I'll stop. :o

Check a page or two back I posted the link & table from TI regarding the 4430. As other people stated it might be binned to 1.2, but its listed from TI at 1GHz.

not to nitpick, but you were correct the first time. what speed the chip is stable at is immaterial, binning (yes, I'm familiar with it) doesn't matter either.

Overclocking is to run at over its "rated" speed. That means if the spec sheet on the OMAP 4430 says its a 1ghz processor, then if moto is running it at 1.2 it IS overclocked. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, merely a technical fact.

I had a 550 mhz PIII that ran perfectly fine at 733 at stock voltage, and probably came off the same wafers as Intel's PII 733's, it was just spec'd lower because Intel needed more of them. BUT I was overclocking it.

Well, if the processors are tested and meet all the requirements for the standard 1 GHz (except speed), but run in a tolerance that they can be classified as 1.2 GHz, Moto would seperate those (speed bin) and market them as an upgrade over the 1GHz (premium pricing). They would actually be rated for 1.2 GHz, not 1 GHz. In the hobby world, with electric RC cars/trucks, the batteries are tested for voltage, and capacity, and then are sold in different tiers, with the best ones costing the most. But they are all under the same classification for the battery, and are all equally legal to race with. Same concept.

We had a few pages exploring this in detail, until the complaints came in (and I took down my post on what I'm about to say :D).

Based on the 1500+ pages of design documents I've reviewed on the 4430/4460 (to find the relevant few dozen or less) - it's simply better to indicate that both the 4430 and 4460 are clocked. Overclocking and underclocking here may not really translate to the way you may think of other processors and binning.

While the original spec targets were 1 and 1.5 GHz respectively, and the face on the web reflects that, there's really quite a bit more to it with the OMAP4 family.

I have yet to find a single public reference to support the idea that the 4430 and 4460 are made on the same wafers. Would love to see something that backs that up because it's still unreasonable to me - not impossible - just unreasonable.

Droid Life is saying $649 for both RAZR and ReHound. (off contract)

Ouch.

My guess is it'll be the same for SGN.

The overlay does not go all the way to the actual bottom of the Nexus's screen. remember those virtual buttons? ;)

I totally didn't think of that!!!! :D :D

But ok - still - for effective real estate - those button are using some (real estate) while the display is up - so - for a text page, the comparison stands.

If we had just a page of a photo - like say, the ViewSonic parrots - we can re-do it. ;)

Yeah! There's all kinds of marketing synergy they could use. Pair the RAZR up with Country Crock, and voila!

Makes me wonder if the Motorola folks WANTED a 4460, but couldn't get them in the quantities they wanted, so instead paid for a binned 1.2 GHz 4430 so as not to delay an otherwise ready phone. So does this mean TI is reserving all the 4460s they can make for the GNex, in return for being the official processor of ICS? I have to say, if there is a supply problem on the GNex, the 4460 will be the #1 suspect in my book right now.

I did a quick Google search and found something over at XDA where someone shares the same opinion as you regarding 4430/4460 being from same wafer though.

Other uses include a coffee cup heater, and this phone would be great scraping ice off my windshield on those cold NY winters....I want the RAZR CALIENTE*

I've seen the RAZR twice now...

Heat-- Yup -- not hot- but definitely get's to the hot side of warm. Now it's all relative folks- no-one will be frying an egg on the thing. And if the rest of the unit is designed to tolerate the heat- and it likely has been- it really shouldn't be an issue. If that's a bee in your bonnet- don't buy it.

Screen- I love the panic in the streets. Again it's all relative. That green closeup is not indicative of what you'll see. Overall it's a better than average screen- white, contrasty, and bright. Not the best- certainly not as nice as Retina- but better than most. It's just not gonna win any awards. If you need the best screen- get a different unit.

I will say though the screen was nice-- it didn't have the WOW factor of Retina. And as a result I'll be going Nexus. But make no mistake-- this is a impressive phone- as much as there is the temptation to bust on it.
