***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

I've been reading this thread for a while now and it feels like more and more people are registering just to be part of this thread. I probably won't be able to contribute much as I don't have a 'source' and I probably won't post much either.

There is one thing I wanted to say. I've seen a lot of people mention that they have a late December upgrade bonus with Verizon. I was in the same boat. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to renew my contract and get the Nexus at the 2 year contract price. I don't care much about the $50 new every two bonus, but that contract price was essential.

Verizon CAN let you upgrade early. If you send them an email through their customer support explaining the situation they'll give you that early upgrade. I've heard that they have said no before, so maybe try emailing again and hoping you get a different service rep until one says yes. Probably wouldn't hurt to sound desperate in the email. I had to struggle to leave the "I'll shoot myself if I have to wait until the end of December" out of my email.

I got a response in 2 days. Only things I changed in this email was removing my name, his name, his phone number and extension, and some extra blank lines between paragraphs. Hopefully this helps a few people here.

Ok I'm also taking the two (useless) links out of his email since I can't post links in my first post, apparently. Ok so it simply won't let me post a copy of his email even with no links what so ever so I'm just going to quote the important part.

I would be happy to upgrade you early, but as you mentioned the Nexus has not yet had a release data announced. Once the date is available you can call me at ---- and we can then order you the device.

He said I can call him as soon as the release date is available and he will "order me the device" which to me suggests a pre-order period. Or no pre-order and I'll get to cheat it and pre-order anyways. Or possibly no warning at all and they'll just drop the phone on their website without warning. Or maybe something else.

ok, just thought i should share my view on the whole "verizon wont announce the date of the gnex until after (insert phone here) is launched and off the ground" theory. the biggest flaw i see in this theory is that verizon announced the razr(their supposed favorite), then promptly announced the rezound before the razr was ever launched in store. i would think that if they didnt want to step on the toes of a phones launch it would have been the razr, and by announcing the rezound before the razrs in store launch, this theory of not wanting to announce the gnex before (insert phone here) launch day is completely shot. im not sure when we will have a solid release date officially from verizon, but i definitely think that the release of the rezound will not impact the timing of the announcement, all things considered.

I agree with you on that, in fact I made a similar point many pages back. The only argument against that is that VZW makes more money per phone on the RAZR and Rezound than they do on the SGN, due to bloatware.

Maybe Verizon doesn't mind announcing two phones filled with Verizon bloat at the same time. The odd man out is the G-nex. Who knows what they're thinking

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the insight! The poor reps at verizon have no idea what they're in for. (And I don't mean that we are going to be savages - just the sheer magnitude of emails I see coming their way is going to astound them)

Honestly, I don't remember. I think it was from him going back and forth between announcing that Verizon was bloating it to death, and that Verizon was not, in fact, bloating it to death. At one point he actually said "R.I.P. Nexus", indicating that Verizon wouldn't be carrying it after all. He's like a windsock, meaning he blows in different directions at the drop of a hat. The problem with that is that he tries to get everyone all riled up with his every mood change.

Although I think that "Windsock" is getting old. I'm trying to change over to "The Great Tool".

Please don't change Han. Everytime I read one of your posts that refers to "the Windsock" I literally laugh out loud. People around me think I'm strange. Maybe they're right....

Wow, you folks have been busy, I step away for a couple hours and you blow past the 25k post like its sitting still!!! :)

the problem with these points is that in vzw's eyes, the bloat ware is not all equal. having the verizon baby "droid" branded razr in the hands of their customers is more important to them than having just another android phone, purely from a marketing and brand association point of view. so it still stands to reason that vzw would want to give the razr the most possible room in launch, but announcing the rezound and putting it in stores 3 days after is crippling to that idea.

Ok - now that accessories are rolling, it's time for that famous thread to get started, so I'll seed the idea first.

Now that you'll have an HD display in your pocket all of the time, what monster apps will you rock?

Ok, so everyone knows about Netflix, Hulu and using things like Handbrake (or many others) to prepare your Legal Only Blu-ray rips(*) but what about others?

Since I'm not a big gamer, I'll toss out - Crackle (free movies from Sony, ad-supported) and CrunchyRoll (free legal anime and Japanese movies via wifi) - both free in the Market.

How will you rock and roll when you get the big screen?

(* footnote)
Do I even have to say what happens to anyone linking to, suggesting, or even breathing about sites that bypass legal copyrights or get within a mile of any sort of piracy?

Of course not - I didn't think so - cheers, thanks. :)

PS - If you're not sure, PM your favorite mod before posting. There are no penalties for asking questions privately. ;)

Like i always do:

Webtop remote
Gosms
ESPN3 App
Splashtop
PowerAmp
Dolphin

same way i'll always roll.

Ya, nearly a 25000 word post. He should fit right in..........

Yeah, and I had to type all of that twice because of some limitation on my first post and I lost my message.

Thanks for liking my first post. I feel right at home already.

Now that i'm at the Verizon Wireless Ranch (Actually, I have been for over five years now) I realize something. We are kind of like a herd of cattle living at a ranch. While we think we have freedom to eat whatever we want, we are only limited to what grass or hay bales the rancher thinks we want or should have. Just like how Verizon wireless has control over what phones we can use and even how we use them.

The iSheep are probably laughing at us with there iPhone 4s while we standing in line Mooing at eachother. We'll see who's laughing come November 17th. (it's either us or Verizon. I hope were laughing with our new phones!)

Early,

Should we start a new thread on how best to utilize Handbrake to put our movies on our new friend? I know we had one in the Incredible forum, but there didn't seem to be a consensus on what were the settings.

I would love to put my LEGALLY OWNED movies on my phone, but not really used to Handbrake.

I certainly wholeheartedly encourage creation of such a thread. :)

It was about at this point in the Evo 3D pre-release timeline that we started one in that forum, and that's worked out really great.

People were able to prepare questions and answers and get a bit of a feel for things by the time the phone came out. Then, all that left was mechanics and settings - it really worked out for the best to have that preparation.

Unlike the other phones, as you get into HD territory, your resolution options open up - as will your questions for the right schemes to support quality vs. storage.

Here's our thread - http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/352568-anyone-converting-movies-handbrake-yet-other-tools.html

Anyone new to this, ok to lurk that and get all expert-like on terms like codec and transcoding. :) ;)

Any of those posts you want to quote into your thread, great - any that look so good, you'd like copies of the posts in your new thread, just hit up your friendly staff for help on that.

Here's what you don't post - some of the paid disc burner/ripper tools will promise you a free copy if you post an ad for them. First, that earns you an instant time out from the forums. Second - there always seem to be better alternatives. When in doubt, review the above thread, you'll see how we like it here. ;)

And pretty simply - if it's not discussing a movie that you haven't already paid for and own on disk, then just don't bother discussing it. :)

Hope this helps!

I guess I have an off-the-wall question about ripping DVDs for Nexus:

My laptop doesn't have a Blu-Ray player, so I'm limited to ripping standard DVDs. If I rip them to 1280x720 resolution in DVD Catalyst, how will that work, since the DVD resolutions aren't that high? Or are they?

In the HD world, that's called scaling (changing resolutions).

Scaling software on many PCs isn't too great, so you'll want to experiment and see if just making a standard mp4 of the DVD, scaled from 480i to 480p, and then see how the scaler in the Gnex does. With the media emphasis, I'm betting it's going to be as good or better than many of the HDTVs from just a few years ago.

We'll have to see, tho.

PS - DVDs are strictly 480i - everything else you've seen is done with software, either in the player, TV or both.

You won't rip them to 720p...DVDs are 480p, so depending on how it's cropped you're around 720x480.

On a screen that size, you won't notice the difference in a movie.

Trapped watching x factor with my girlfriend and getting yelled at because I keep hitting refresh here on my phone...apparently, "it's like I'm in my own little world..."

*** gapi raises his head out of his hands, logs on, and reaches for the "Thanks" button wanting to know how many more followers Steven58 needs. Unwilling to log off he puts his chin down and lurks ***

I don't know what it is, but gapi's posts usually bring a smile to my face. Maybe it's the 3rd person or the twitter mention.

I'll help gapi out and follow Steven58 on twitter.

Also, today is a good day, with the Source release date reply and I got into the Star Wars: The Old Republic beta weekend!!!! :D

News about cases, the 25000th post, and solid info about the LED?

I miss all the fun :(

:p

By the way, Han, I gave you your 2000th thank, congrats and you're welcome :D

My daughter just walked in my room to say good night and walked out saying "Na is right, you have a problem" (na is what she calls my mother). But she was referring to the fact that I currently have my phone, ipad w/keyboard and laptop all sitting on my bed.

Ladies and gentlemen a memmber here, FragDroid, was told in store after handling the Nexus of a November 21 web only release and December 1 in store availability

Take it for what its worth but I'm just sharing the info.

Salt pile at the ready but thanks for the info.
