what is the deal with NFC technology? Do two people have to have Galaxy Nexus for it to work? If so, I don't know how useful it will be because not everyone and their mother will have a GN like people have iPhones

Eventually stores will have the hardware installed so you can bump or slide your phone by it and pay for things if you have your payment info setup. I believe some places already allow for this but not many.

Google music but it takes FOREVER to upload the music to their server. I have been using subsonic, it streams the music from your computer like motocast. There is a free trial for 30 days, after that its only like a one time fee of $13.

Agreed, been using subsonic a while myself for music and podcasts. I've got a 24/7 linux box running on a fios connection, so it's perfect for me.

BTW, the one time fee is only to unlock the API for apps (like android phone apps). If you only want to use the web interface, you don't need to pay for the api unlock. Then again, having iphone/android apps work is *well* worth the $13 one time fee.

Pretty slick, and it's nice to setup multiple accounts. Have guest accounts for friends to listen to music, one for my parents, then me and the wife. All can listen simultaneously, and you can see what other folks are listening too (at least in the web app, don't think that's in the android client I use).

I especially like that I never have to put music on my phone anymore. Set the app to cache the last couple of gigabytes of music you've played, or you can directly download (pin) music in your collection to listen to offline.

There are many uses of NFC. One of them, "beam" as Android call it, requires another user with an NFC enabled phone running Android 4.0.

But there are plenty of other uses, such as making payments using your phone.

I'm particularly interested in buying some NFC labels and programming them so the phone might behave in a certain way when I swipe it. So for example, I might stick a label to my bedside table, then when I go to bed, I swipe it, and my phone is put into Airplane mode and a clock app fires up.

Please vzw, come through on Monday! My dinc is rebooting to the white htc screen every time I back out of any app, and it's about to end up in a bunch of pieces against the sidewalk

Sounds like mine when I had to reflash my rom. :(

I'm very interested in this too. The link that was posted a couple days ago looks promising for a 'starter kit'

This intriuqes me the most! I'm aware of other location aware apps, but don't they require gps, and thus joules to operate? This seems like a very nice low power solution!

Do you have any links about guidelines, howtos, etc? TIA!

Someone just yelled out in the office, "There is a God and he takes credit cards!"

Did pre-orders start and no one told me?

Quick question...:

Does anyone know if the Nexus will support FLAC or ALAC out of the box with Google Music Player? I have PowerAmp already but just was curious and wanted to know.

Also, quite a few pages back you guys were talking about small personal pouches for the phone, and how the G1 came with one. Any idea on where to order one of those or something similar. Someone replied back but digging through these pages for one post is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Thanks

Edit: My apologies if this isn't the right place to ask. Figured it would be the best and I'd get an answer quick because of the traffic this thread gets.

the device needs to have NFC, at this point hardly any do. this tech. will probably become more prevalent over the next several years though.

eventually you'll probably be able to:
buy metro tickets
pay for gas
pay for stuff at 7-eleven
etc
