Root You can now unroot revolutionary

ok so yes your hboot is 6.17 so lets try a ruu that you run on your computer then download this file:
[ROM]RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release_exe
run this file on your computer and plug in your phone when it tells you to. also make sure that the phone has usb debugging on.

For some reason this refuses to run on my Windows XP box - it runs for a while and then just says that there was a problem and needed to close.

With my S-OFF I have done so much as downgrade to the original Froyo release for the EVO 4G and then update to 2.3.3 Ginger, re-root using Revolutionary and lather rinse repeat the above method. Still sitting with S-OFF.

My phone has been acting up lately: boot loops, losing phone capability but still having data. Sprint had me enter some ## codes and then all went crazy and the phone became unusable. Now Sprint tells me they are sending me a new EVO free of charge, but if mine is returned with S-OFF that I will have to pay the full $449.00 they currently charge for the phone w/o contract.

Unless I can get S-ON, I guess I will be returning the new EVO straight back to them w/o activating it and living with my old BB Curve until I can upgrade. I don't want to pay $449.00 for a phone I was going to upgrade in 4 months when my current contract on the EVO expires.

:(

I miss my EVO................

Can you get into the hboot by turning the phone off pull battery wait 10sec put battery back in and hold power and volume down untill in hboot screan. There you should see what the hboot is. Report back with the hboot and ill give you the link to unroot,

Tried that method (third time) now, still showing S-OFF. One thing I should mention the pink banner that says "revolutionary" is gone.

Not sure what pink banner you are talking about but did the file get found in h boot and update but stayed s off? or did you get an error.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like mikey said, what is you hboot doing when you have the PC36IMG file on the sd card? does it do anything? we need a little more details as to what is going on. do you have the file named correctly? are you putting it on the "root" of the sd card? that means not in any folder just on the card?

HBOOT loads fine, it finds the "S-ON" tool labeled PC36IMG .zip fine and allows it to load without declaring any errors. It then asks if I wish to reboot. I choose to power down the device, remove the SD and remove the PC36IMG file via my laptop. I then take the ROM file and load it on the SD and rename it PC36IMG and HBOOT the phone. The phone finds the file and starts the update process. During the process there is a vertical process bar on the right side of the HBOOT screen that fills from the bottom up, in different colors corresponding to which file is being written to the CMOS of the phone. The process completes successfully and I reboot the phone. After the phone settles I go into settings to turn off "Fast boot" and power down. Then using V-Down + Power to re-enter HBOOT screen where it says S-OFF still.

The pink banner I am referring to is after rooting via the "Revolutionary" method, HBOOT looks almost normal, except there is a pink highlighted banner at the top of the screen that says "Revolutionary". After completing the unroot process that "Revolutionary" banner is missing, but S-OFF is still displayed. If I use HBOOT to select recovery, it will go to the red triangle exclamation mark screen, at that point I press V-down + V-up + Power and it takes me to the stock HTC recovery screen.

Options on that screen are:

Reboot system now
Apply update from sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

Every PC36IMG does not give errors, whether it is the PC36IMG file that is supposed to S-ON the phone or the PC36IMG that updates the phone to Android 2.3.3

Since I am still S-OFF, I may go ahead and downgrade the phone back to Froyo 2.2 and try the unrevoked S-ON tool again. At one point after using Revolutionary to root, Sprint had released an OTA update that had placed the phone back into S-ON and it was a headache to get back to being rooted. Not sure how I got it back as the Revolutionary tool kept reporting that I was already rooted but no SU access. I think I had only re installed clockwork recovery to regain SU access.

I am worried that the OTA that I had accepted changed something that does not allow me to toggle S-ON, in other words they "perma rooted" my phone in case I needed to exchange the phone.

Like I mentioned before, I can send the new EVO back to them when it arrives and just tell them I will stay with my old BB 8330 until my 4 months pass and I am out of contract and eligible for upgrade.

ok so i think what happened is that you installed the ruu which is a stock recovery and stock rom, but did not flash the s-on PC36IMG file. it is a two step process. the first file is this one:
PC36IMG6.17.zip . make sure to change it so that it is PC36IMG. this one will give you s-off.

next you need to install this one:
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_209995_signed.zip
this one will give you stock recovery and rom.

I flashed the .zip that is 209kb first. It had a single progress bar, flashed in about 10 seconds. Then I flashed the .zip that is about 219mb which had about 9 progress bars, after the first 3 or so there was a quick reboot of HBOOT and then it would finish the other process'. Total time for the second .zip to flash was about 10 minutes.

I did all the above from a fresh root using Revolutionary which is older than the current Sprint OTA ROM.

ok so try this suggestion:
xda-developers - View Single Post - How to Un-Root Revolutionary Root ?

basically downgrade you radio and since your hboot is now 6.17, you would not need to flash the PC36IMG s-on tool. but i would try unrevoked s-on tool like it is suggested to get s-on and then try the ruu that i provided earlier.

Downgraded to the original RUU when EVO was pushed 2.2 rooted again using unrevoked forever. Followed the steps for unrevoked s-on tool and it reported successful. Reboot and the POS is still s-off. This phone is truly getting on my nerves. I know the unrevoked s-on tool worked for me in the past and I followed the same steps to get s-on. I don't have this much trouble with my DroidX, which I use with the Torque app, HTC phones have bluetooth hardware that is buggy to say the least and I could never get torque to stay running on my EVO. I bought the DroidX from a friend for $30 so I have a dedicated engine readout system in my car. I wish there was a way I could totally bork the phone without it being obvious that it was done on purpose. ie if it won't even power on, they can't find the s-off. The worst part is Sprint tech told me straight out that they will check for root when I return the phone. Looks like I will be on BB for another 4 months. I am kind of attracted to the Motorola Android phone on Sprint.

Downgraded again to Froyo, rooted with unrevoked forever, flashed the s-on tool from unrevoked again. s-off was still there. On a whim I RUU Froyo again, unrevoked rooted again, s-on unrevoked tool and was still rooted. I ran the s-on tool once again for giggles. What the heck I have about 12 hours of working on this stupid phone trying to get s-on. Pulled the battery and ran the Froyo RUU once more for the heck of it. When it booted I opened the app drawer and didn't see SU.... Yanked the battery and went to boot into HBOOT and behold S-ON!!!!!!!!!!

I am so relieved, so next week UPS will be delivering my replacement EVO Sprint is giving me for free (no deductible) because they think they borked it for me with a bad ## code trying to fix a "error 16" I was getting attempting to connect on voice calls, data was working fine.

I am so freaking happy right now, and I thank this forum and members for helping me, especially dealing with my whine and cry.

Thank you all!

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
glad you figured it out. and thanx for posting how you resolved it. hopefully somebody will get some help while stumbling onto your post.

I do quite well when it comes to technical things like root or jailbreaking etc. I can't believe how difficult this proved to be for me. It doesn't help that my EVO has been having trouble staying booted even when it only gets a little warm. So this process of flashing .zip files or running RUU.exe has been so much more frustrating as the phone is so unstable.

When I finally saw the s-on in HBOOT I actually yelled out and did a fist pump in the air. My wife sitting next to me looked at me like I am crazy (I am crazy BTW). At least she was equally happy that I got s-on, as I have been a cranky SOB since being on the phone with Sprint tech and their stupid ## codes only made the damn overheating problem worse.

Thanks again, hopefully I can be a viable part of this online forum.

also do you have usb debugging turned on your phone?

Hi, just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for the help! I took the same executable home and ran it on my Windows Vista box and it did it's job very well! I got the phone back to stock and took it in, and had to go through two Sprint stores and about 4 calls to Sprint customer service to convince them that a loose USB port is considered to be a design defect and not damage, so they replaced it for free. I had enough confidence by doing all of the stuff to unroot my phone to root it again, and this time install Cyanogenmod 7! w000t~

Again, thanks for all the help that you supply on these forums! You guys ROCK! :):):)

I have tried all of the steps mentioned from the very first post and I still have S-off. The PC137IMG files update fine. I've also tried the RUU posted above. Still have S-off.

Any other ideas for the new-bie?

My HBoot is 2.16.001
Radio 2.15.00.05.02

interesting. can you get into recovery? looks like the ruu might have worked as you have the old hboot (revolutionary gives you an hboot of either 6.16 or 6.17).

also the s-on file should be named PC36IMG and not PC137IMG. i hope that you did not get the files confused. because both files need to be the same name when you change it.

No recovery, just EVO with red triangle.

ok so right now your phone is in a weird state. you have s-off, but your hboot has been changed back to what it was before you rooted and you also have the stock rom and stock recovery. try running the PC36IMG file that is supposed to get you s-on again (i would download it again as well). make sure that you have the previous PC36IMG file deleted from the sd card. also make sure that you change the name of the s-on file to PC36IMG as well.

if you can't get it to work then you may need to try revolutionary again to get the hboot switched back to 6.16 so that the s-on tool can get you s-on again.

I call myself a newbie- but I've spent so many hours doing this over the years- maybe I'm a helpless rooter.
There's no doubt I didn't follow the instructions to the letter in post one and it didn't work.
Then I went back use revolutionary and I did get the hboot switched back to 6.16....then I followed the instructions in post 1 again.
Still no luck... now I'm back to Hboot 2.16.0001

Is there any other possible thing that I am doing incorrect? Previously- an RUU file use to always work.. not sure why they no longer work.. and I've tried a bunch.
When you chose an RUU- what are you looking for?

My phone now says
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 2.16.0001
RADIO 2.15.00.05.02

Thanks in advance
