Thanks Early. Very good points. I would like AOSP on the HTC device (if I end up with it) because I don't like Sense and I love what I've seen of ICS.

I'm pretty sure that the HTC ICS update will still be "sensed" up the wazoo.

And you're welcome for the legal non-advice, lol.

I love telling people IANAL and even if I were, I am not YOUR lawyer. :D

Sorry for the misstatement, I'll go edit it now.

Some dispute this, but I think the Evo phones seem to get the most AOSP rom support. (Look at the fossil record if anyone doubts me.) And it takes what feels like forever to get everything working on those roms.

I don't see how the HTC ICS won't be Sensed up the wazoo. Guys like me are ok with that.

You're not. I think you've answered your own question.

And if price is a driver (hey - price is always a driver for me, I learned Ben Franklin's advice about not paying too much for my whistle when I was a kid), then rock the Dinc2 that's making you happy now, wait until after launch, fleaBay the Dinc2 and pick up the Nexus on a sale. I don't know about this phone, but it seems to me that all phones get some nice price breaks after being out a month and face it - there are always early OTAs for various issues on every phone I've watched launch. Heck, the Nexus S went from 2.3 to 2.3.4 in the space of a few months.

For some, waiting has big payoffs.

If you go that route, I wouldn't sweat this crowd. I think you're going to be the de facto leader here for a while. ;)

Has the phone arena camera comparo with the 4S vs GN been posted?

The camera isn't a selling point for me, but this was a nice comparison I thought.

I'd have to say I like the Rezound the best thus far. Not a single issue, smooth as silk with the stock launcher and 4G>3G handoff has been about the best I've seen yet.

that's good to hear - my Thunderbolt 4G/3G handoff and "no data" issues have been enough for me to want to throw it in the trash several times - wasn't sure if HTC knew how to implement radios on Verizon LTE.

Having had a Thunderbolt with S-Off and successfully running CM7 (and as a wanna-be dev), perhaps I can shed some light on the problems with the Thunderbolt radio and AOSP...

Although it took them awhile, HTC did indeed release their source for both the operating system and the kernel for the Thunderbolt. However, since the radios (there are actually two - 1 CDMA for voice, and 1 LTE for 3G/4G) are proprietary and not open source, HTC was never obligated to release the source for the radio software. The only way to get AOSP working with the new LTE radio (read: first commercially available LTE radio) was to reverse engineer the compiled radio code from several HTC fastboot files.

Basically, @slayher (Tony Layher - the CM7 maintainer for the Thunderbolt and several other devices), had to rewrite the radio code from scratch in order to get it working with AOSP. When the attempt was made to merge the HTC radio code with the CM7 trunk, it succeeded in breaking other devices so the merge was immediately reversed. Consequently CM7 development for the Thunderbolt has continued to progress in parallel with the trunk.

All of the above being said, it is very likely that the same AOSP issues will exist with the Rezound unless someone finally gets hold of the radio source.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it... ;)

Great post, thanks!

I wonder, though, why HTC would be so friendly about releasing source code for the OS and kernel, and with easily unlocked bootloaders, but won't release the radio code?

They released the source for the OS and the kernel because the were "obligated" to based on the open source licensing. Moto releases the source as well, they just have much better encryption for locking their bootloaders.

Since the radio is proprietary, there is no obligation to release the code. In other words, HTC, Moto, and others don't want the devs effing with their code, even though the dev community probably could do it better.

At least that is my opinion...

A friend of mine who's immune system is effected by interferon treatments has to be careful in avoiding the flu and such.

We were talking phones and he informed me he had found cleaning the display of a touch screen phone with an alcohol swipe will wake up the responsiveness of a device.
He says it does not have to be so dirty you can see the human residue to make the difference.

Makes sense for him because of all the humans that handle and leave germs on the phones.

After that when my OG buttons and screen would seem to delay or fail on the first swipe or tap I tried it and its amazing.

So you guys testing store phones be fair and make an effort to have a clean display eh?

Are you saying your phone has human to machine virus? And cleaning it with an alcohol wipe killed the virus?

The AMA will be calling you to write a paper :D

For now being the key word, Android has been steadily catching up. I really haven't noticed a key game on iOS that I really miss having on Android, although I am not a big phone gamer.

Sure, but the OP states he's a gamer and wants an answer for today's phones. I'm not a gamer either so I stick with android. I did find that for the month I owned a ip4, I played and found much more games that I liked than on my bolt.

Im really not a big fan of the small screen of the 4S. We tried the Liberty rom on her phone but she didnt like it, any other suggestions? thanks.

My understanding is, for the OS and kernal, they are required to by the android terms of use. (not because they want to)

Radios have always been a huge secret thing in phones. the one with the best radio gets the sales. Motorola got a large number of sales for MANY years just because of their reputation in radios, and still do for that matter.

Speaking of phone games, does anyone know any solid RPGs that I could try out once I get the Nexus? I tried playing Zenonia on my OG Droid and it didn't go well at all. I've also heard about a cool upcoming RPG called Skyfall, but besides those, I really don't know much. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

I've always alcohol'd my screen (actually the entire phone) every 2-3 weeks or so and it definitely helps my Inc screens responsiveness. Carry alcohol wipes when you go to the verizon store maybe :p

Since being invloved with the Dental industry all my life the only 100% sure way of killing bacteria's and or virus's (well inactivating them) on instruments is an autoclave. I'm do know alcohol certainly helps though per the CDC

Because with open radio code on an HTC, you can do all sorts of things to smoke the device on error or even violate FCC-mandated strictures.

Probably applies to other phones as well.

And anything not open sourced isn't required to be open. They're required to release the kernel and OS code - but not the proprietary Sense sources.

They make this easy on themselves by making the radio payloads separate from the ROMs on their phones.

Hi all first post here! I have been lurking and patiently waiting for the release of the nexus. I currently have an upgrade available on my line. I use a DroidX and so does my wife. Her DroidX is on it's last legs and is ready to go. I am a big fan of Ubuntu/Linux over windows based systems. My problem is her phone is pretty much dead, and I have been debating on whether or not to just get the Iphone 4S and give her my DX. I am not a big fan of apple devices but, I am a big gamer on my phone. I am very worried about the GPU benchmarks for the Nexus as the scores were rather low. I enjoy games like Order & Chaos online and etc. I will more than likely have the Nexus (or Iphone 4S)for the next 2 years and I hope to be able to play the latest games from the marketplace without any LAG whatsoever. Please help me in my decision making, from all the post I have read, it seems that very bright and knowledgeable people post here. Thank you

Welcome to the craziness.
I can't help you in your decision making but the other, more knowledgable, people here most certainly can give opinions based on technical issues.

I clean my phone off with an alcohol wipe about once a week. Good to know that may be helping in keeping it responsive

We broke the record.... now what?

Great for glass phone screens, for most laptops with their typical soft covers, check first - usually a diluted alcohol is just fine in those cases.

Wanted to toss that warning out before people took to their laptops with something from the medicine cabinet!

Guys,

I just wanted to share an AWESOME story that is Android related but not Nexus related. If you are at all concerned about phone security or you just want to read something cool, check it out.

So my sister lost her Droid 3 at a store today. She got it about 2 months ago, and did NOT have any GPS tracking software on it.

Anyway, she called it multiple times from my parent's home phone and no one answered. She went to the police station to see if there was any way they could track it, but they couldn't. She went the Verizon store, and the manager was actually really rude. He said there was nothing she could do because she did not have "Where's my Droid" installed, and just walked away in the middle of the conversation. So she came to me and asked what she could do.

I signed into the Android Market under her gmail account, and REMOTELY INSTALLED an application called Plan B. When this app is installed, it automatically starts, and it tracks your GPS location and emails it to your gmail account, giving you a google map of where your phone is.

The app sent the GPS coordinates to her gmail account, and said it was in 3m of that location. We called the cops and reported the address, and the cops were able to go to the house and get the phone! How awesome is that?

We do not believe the people that had the phone stole it. They were an elderly couple and found it at the store and were outside hanging Christmas lights, so they did not get the calls.

I still think it is totally awesome that I was able to remotely install and track the phone.

:D:D:D:D

Alright so instead of the D3 I planned on getting my mom, I'm going to get her the Razr or Rezound off Amazon for a penny! I figure I'll get her the 4g phone so I can get the double data deal for all of us too. I was going to wait and see when the Gnex released but I just found out we are about to go over our minutes so I want to upgrade the plan.

So I may not be ordering my Gnex, but at least I have a new phone to play with till Christmas! haha.

UPDATE: So I went with the Rezound for 2 reasons 1) its thicker which I bet will be better with her arthritis. 2)HD screen better with 65 year old vision. I hope she likes it!!
