Handset silliness :)

Been meaning to post this since the Bluetooth phone solutions a few pages back. :)

I find no Android is complete without something like this installed - especially when your iFriends give you grief -

And to complete the old Western Electric handset plug in and the BT Western Electric desk phone, I give you -

ThinkGeek :: ThinkGeek Bluetooth Retro Handset

(yeah, I know - out of stock right now :()

lol you just might have made a sale ;)

It wasn't always this way, though, was it?
I remember hearing stories from my friends in Finland, YEARS ago, about being able to pay for things in vending machines with their cell phones, and have it go right to their bill. They laughed at our phones, when they came to visit in 2001... Before phones got really smart, and when Nokia ruled the cell phone industry, I think Finland tended to lead with innovations.

Yep, have to give them their due, no doubt.

However - so far as I know, the first credit card transactions by cell using NFC had the NFC circuitry and antenna added to an SD card with an add-on for an existing feature phone - and that was some time ago.

So - if someone resurrects that for non-Nexicans, you heard it here first (unless you heard it somewhere else :D).

tech note -
PS - As for Japan, they've been amazing.

I had a friend visit from there and he kept calling my brand-new cell phone a handy phone. I thought it was a translation issue. It wasn't - they were ahead -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Handy-phone_System

I went out with a bunch of high-level tech execs one night. After getting more than a little bent, I asked why their phone were all colorful and ours were black - answer - "Our US marketing guys said you only wanted black." After a lot of alcohol, I mentioned we'd like the same, fancy colors - within 6 months, the first non-black Asian handsets hit the US.

Tell the Japanese what you want, and they'll build it.

The Japanese have enjoyed a Sharp/Android phone with the same retinal display resolution and size of the iPhone for over a year - while the rest of the world has drooled that the Android couldn't, the Japanese at Sharp simply did.
No wonder why Apple is going to Sharp for their displays now. ;)

There is almost no curve at all by the looks of it. I remember the first teaser, saying something BIG was coming and it looks so much more curvy.
I liked the curve. kinda wish it had more to it. :(

Aren't there quite a few people here that are from your area? ;) *nudge nudge*

In Tokyo I was impressed by people using their phones to get on trains and pay for things anywhere using something similar to NFC.

Here is a video of it in action but basically whenever you get on, you tap your phone through the gate, whenever you get off, same thing. It calculates the costs based on the tap going in and the tap going out and bills it to the card or mobile phone.

You may also use it at most vending machines and stores.

I'm happy that similar technology is finally picking up in America and will be included with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus!

AWESOME pictures! I like how you left your mark on the phone (VZWAndroider was here) :P

Oh boy I really can't wait for this phone. I don't think I've ever been so excited about anything before lol

Yup I remember that:

Although that looks like it would have been a bit too curvy for my liking. From what I've heard the contour on the GNex is just right.

Yeah that's cool stuff. The whole NFC thing has me thinking about getting some stickers. I've used the Delta app (not NFC just bar codes) on my Inc at Hartsfield International. They have different lines for peeps with their phones and they're way less crowded! Felt kind of special :D

Also does anyone know if a GSM backplate will fit the LTE version?? I don't want that goofy vzw looking stamp on my phone!

i kinda hope it does myself. but the fact that the sim slot is in a different place i have a feeling the back will have a different molding on it. :/

Wonder if this was already discovered and patched on the Verizon version?

Maybe that is what 4.1 fixes?

@jbqueru Galaxy Nexus hardware/kernel bug: if the screen is off, wifi downloads at only 1k/s. 3G works at normal speeds though.

Just a guess....I think yes it will. I scoped out eBay and found a back cover of the GSM version for $25

I have a few accessories to get first but will probably get the back cover also.

Will That Be Cash or Cell Phone?; Wireless Payment Systems Might Mean Dialing Inot Your Own Wallet - New York Times

few good mentions for Japan and Finland in this article from 2000. The dude from Finland was already paying for car washes with his phone, according to the last sentence.

Anyone know if there is a way to put the 3 main buttons down when browsing to have a full screen?

When you say down do you mean oriented differently or getting rid of them all together?

I think I just recently saw a screenshot by Wilfred? showing just 3 little dots so they're not gone completely.

I just flashed ICS to my INC last night it's pretty sweet. The dev will eventually have 2 ROMS one with on-screen buttons and one without since most if not all people flashing it have dedicated buttons.

Dang I'm babbling sorry. If you can't do it now, then chances are very good you'll be able to if you root and flash a ROM who's dev has included a mod like this.

Broke down and bought the Galaxy Nexus version of the TPU case that NightAngel is using on his RAZR. Supposed to be here around next Thursday, hope I have a phone by the next day to put in it.
