Anyone have any thoughts/experience with buying phones on launch day from VZW corporate stores? Do they usually have long lines? Enough stock?

My only experience buying at a store on launch day is with the BB Storm 1 and it was a nightmare, so I'm wondering whether I'm better off just trying to get the Nexus online even if it means not getting it in my hands by launch day.

Thanks!

I've never had a hard time. Don't get me wrong, there was line line of people waiting before the store opened, but they still had enough stock. Now mind you, I live in upstate NY, so it isn't as populated as a big city.

On the way to the Samsung store in NYC ;)

OK, if indeed anyone is going......What did Stephen58 miss eh?

  • Go into settings and disable the search bar and try to drag & place a shortcut there.
  • It there a 3G/4G toggle?
  • If you can make a call test the speaker phone?
  • ?

OT but I just got back from Gamestop after playing around with the ASUS Transformer Prime and I gotta say it's awesome! Unfortunately, the display model was amethyst grey (I've preordered the champagne gold) but I was pleasantly surprised at how sleek and sexy it was. Also, the brushed metal on the back wasn't a huge fingerprint magnet as I thought it would be in that color, especially.

So let me get this straight...

I currently own a Thunderbolt. My mother and brother have an upgrade, but I made a deal with my mother to take her upgrade and pay for my new phone and she can take my phone without paying a dime. My brother and I are both getting the GN. Does this mean that when we go to the Verizon store we will have pay 3 activation fees at $35 each?!?

Lines? my store, hell no, but your mileage may vary. I got a white iP4s at 8:00 pm on launch day. He said he had 10, or so, in the back still.

No, activation fees are only for new lines, not upgrades!

I plan to open a new line, purchase the Nexus and then swap the Nexus with my phone on the two lines. Given this scenario, is it possible:
A) to get the new phone without having the VZW associate open the box and activate the phone on site?
B) Can I just open a new line and take the new, boxed phone home and then deactivate my phone and reactivate both on their respective lines?
C) Can I bypass the activation fee(s) by doing this?

I agree with past comments that I hate not being the first one to touch MY new phone, but after buying the OG Droid and the X2, it never occurred to me that I could walk out of the store with a unopened box.

I am not sure I think they will still charge the activation fee for the new line. I know that is the only time I got charged the activation fee was when I first opened a line.

I have never had any true lines at my stores. The largest was about 7 people. It may help that there are a bunch of stores around my area, but even with the iphone launch there was no line. it seems apple stores are the only ones with lines.

There is a 3G 4G toggle, I posted an image of it last night

Do you guys plan on unlocking the bootloader right away after getting the phone? From what I've read, it wipes the phone, right? At this point, I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to root the phone and use custom roms. But I likely will, if only to be able to backup with custom recovery.

I know I'm going to be excited to use the phone right away and install apps, but I'm thinking it probably makes more sense to hook it up to my PC and unlock the bootloader before doing much of anything. Am I correct in assuming that once I unlock the bootloader (which wipes the phone), rooting the phone will not wipe it again?

Thanks!

Rooting will wipe the phone again yes. I am going to unlock the bootloader first and then set everything up because I am not sure if I am going to root right away since it has nothing I need to remove like on previous phones(all vzw garbage)

I do not understand the wording of that setting as a 3G/4G toggle but as a DATA enable or disable switch. To look at it I would thing it is a Data/No Data toggle eh?

But if you say so.

Excuse me. I see the LTE/CDMA thing now. The checked off DATA switch got me.

Yeah, same here. I got my wife a 4S on launch day and showed up an hour after the store opened and still got one. Still, I ll be there when the doors open for the Nexus.

The option is Network Mode. You can set it to "CDMA" only or LTE/"CDMA".
I put CDMA in quotes because I'm not sure if it's true CDMA as it's handled by the SIM card now AFAIK.

On most 4g phones there is a place to turn the phone from LTE/cdma to just CDMA which is in a sense a 4g on/off switch. Someone came up with a widget to turn 4g on and off for the EVO and I think people are looking for something like that.

If you click on Network these options show up.

I dunno about you guys and gals, but I don't care if I wipe my phone every couple months.... takes me an hour or two, at the very most, to get it back where I need it - most of that time is spent waiting so I do it while watching the boob-tube or something.

I found it's always nice to have an extended USB cord so when I get a new phone I can play with it without feeling like I have to be 3 feet from a wall.

CDMA is CDMA. Nothing's changed. LTE uses the SIM but thats only data for now.

nope youll be good. just be sure have your mom there too if she is the primary. they may give you a hard time swapping upgrades if shes the primary.

I always have a usb extension cord so I can pop my phone in the charger and use my phone till I fall asleep. Bad habit, I know, but that's the direction this generation is heading anyways.
