***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Well stopped by a couple of local corporate stores. Got two different answers for the delay. First store, it was a 4g problem and second store it was a problem with ICS. The second guy confirmed they had them in stock. Personally, they don't have a clue on what is going on anymore then we do. However, did get the guy to hold one for me though. He said sometime in the next couple of days it will be out.

I wish more places would do that. On a low carb diet, I try to stick with things on the menu that will work for me, because some places simply aren't willing to sell me what I want.

i can't stand restaurants that tell you "we can't do that" when you order something that they have the ingredients to make, but is not on their menu. on more than one occasion i have replied with "sure you can. you mean, you won't do that".

if i have it, why not find a way to sell it to you? it benefits us both in that i make a few bucks, you get exactly what you want, leave happy and will probably return.

One the same principle, could you in good conscious buy it from verizon? Or most other goods from any other seller for that matter knowing they overcharge also?

Huh? By definition they are charging the going rate for a high end smart phone. How do we know it's the going rate you ask? Because we CLAMOR to give them our $300 in exchange for a phone.

I've never seen these displays in person. Are they having trouble propagating partially because quality in backlit modes is subpar? I would guess they are decent in that mode as I use a $400 elcheapo laptop and am fine with the display, but tend to expect more on a smartphone personally and don't use any device outdoors in sunlight often. I do think there should be such options though for those that need it.

The Pixel Qi has been on the Notion Ink Adam tablet since it came out.

The Mirasol display was initially too slow to keep up with fast action, and they've been improving that, generation by generation - and are now opening fabs for full production. South Korea recently got a new tablet with the Mirasol display - so far as I know, that's the first one.

When transreflective - there is no backlight - basically, think of the pixels as mirrors (e-ink) - the brighter your surroundings, the brighter the display.

The Pixel Qi is unique because it switches between transreflective and conventional LCD - best of both worlds: e-ink for outdoor use, lit display for dim, indoor viewing.

Mirasol is strictly transflective - no backlight at all.

Flash in the pan or the next big thing? I'm hoping, next big thing. :)

So I drop by this small RadioShack and ask if they had the Galaxy Nexus, both sale guys immediately said "yes we do" so I ask if I could take one and they said yes right away. One goes to the back and comes back with the phone in hand and tells me "I've been waiting to activate one of this phones. Then we go trough the process online at the RadioShack/Verizon web portal, he double check that I can get a discount (check), goes to replace the phone (check, no problem), then he get's my credit card/drivers license and is about to charge when the other sales person (a girl this time) was on the phone with some one from Verizon helping her with an iPhone and she ask the guy helping me if he had a question to the Verizon person and passes the phone to him.... so he proceed to the tell the Verizon person that his about to sell a Galaxy Nexus and if he has to do anything else besides the system and charge for the phone when the person at the end of the line tells him (and I heard what he said pretty loud)... YOU GUYS CAN'T SELL ANY NEXUS UNTIL WE GIVE YOU THE GO AHEAD... the RadioShack guy pull his head down like a little kid and listed to the Verizon rep, hangs up and tells me "sorry men, can't sell you the phone... we don't have a release date but if you want I can take your phone number and let you know when you can come by to pick it up".... (*&^% YOU VERIZON!!!! REALLY!!!!

What's you definition of overcharge? Mine is quite simple, charging more than the MSRP of an item. If any company tries to sell an time for more the MSRP, that's called price gouging and it's illegal under most circumstances. Doesn't apply to person to person sales, but does for companies who resell items.

So back to your original question. Is Verizon overcharging? Actually, for subsidized purchases, they are under charging for the hardware, so they can make it up with contracted service.

I have a hard time swallowing the "big evil companies overcharge us" line.

If a Verizon store opened up, and said, we only have a few Galaxy Nexus phones, so who wants to pay the most, then I'd be just as critical of them. But you don't see them doing that.

I also understand that the cost of an item isn't the sole cost of it's components that iSupply reports. There's labor to put it together, purchasers to arrange all the components, engineers to design, quality to test, and a legion of finance and exective positions that keeps the company together. So I don't think most things are "over charged".

The only time I think the consumer gets way overcharged is with printer ink cartridges. I spend like $50 every time I run out of ink :(

The Nexus is definitely worth the $300 subsidized, if not the $700 retail. Cutting edge tech isn't cheap.

That makes perfect sense, and honestly if the customer wants something that's actually easier to make or involves less ingredients I don't see why it's a problem.

Personally, I think it's all in the way the customer approaches it.
A "I don't what this with that, or tell them not to put this on it" attitude is wrong in that situation. I've found greater success in asking "would it be possible to get..." or "Could I trouble you to do it this way..."

I understand the whole "i'm the paying customer" thing but there is almost no limit to what you can get in this world with a little charm and being polite.
Not to mention, no one wants the food that's passed the 5 second rule from the kitchen.... :p

OT: Baseball

So does Matt Kemp get the MVP award now that Ryan Braun popped positive for PEDs?
OT Baseball
I sure hope so...That is, if he is guilty of it which he probably is. I can't believe it man...I mean I am a Yankee's fan, but I really really liked Braun. Sucks...Hopefully if he gets caught, he comes out and tells people and doesn't go Barry Bonds on us and deny it for 10 years. Remember Andy Pettitte doing it? Not many people do...Just come clean, it will look much better.

Should have gave that girl salesperson the death glare with the cut throat sign mouthing no need to pass the phone. Oh or just have taken the phone from them and hang it up and tell them you did that because you don't like to have your salesperson take a call while making a transaction, it may seem rude and make you look asinine but it would have landed you a Nexus for which you would have no need to return to that small RadioShack. So close yet so far away. Hopefully, you can get it maybe a second time around with a different person? Best of luck and hope you get yours soon.

OT College Bball
With #1 and #2 falling today, Cuse is going to be #1 in the country next week! HELL YEAH!!!! WOOOHOOO! So pumped...I feel like they really deserve it. I think OSU healthy (with Sully) is the best team in the country, but since he is out right now, Cuse deserves it.

On a whim, I decided to check out the Gizmodo Gallery to see what all was going on. When looking at the phones on display, I was shocked to see a Galaxy Nexus.

The phone is zippier, more polished, and better to use than any Android phone on the market. Video is nothing short of spectacular on the 720p display, and web browsing is fantastic. The convex back combined with the concave glass makes for phone that feels amazing in the hand and great when making a call.

While it's the HSPA version, the phone is amazing. I'm 110% sold on the device, and I can't wait until Thursday, or whenever it drops--it's well worth the wait.

I wish I'd gone earlier, but if you have the time to go to the Gizmodo Gallery, it is absolutely worthwhile. Better hurry up, because tomorrow from 11:00-6:00 is your last chance.

On another note, I heard the Samsung Experience store put the phone back out, but I cannot confirm because I haven't been since Monday evening, and they were off the shelves when I was there.

Notion Ink Adam tablet?

I thought that was vaporware, or pretty much so since only like 100 people actually got them, and half of those returned them.

Yea I've said that for years.... People complain about how high a gallon on gas is but it gets drilled, removed from the ground, shipped half way around the planet, refined then shipped to terminals then trucked to your local gas station. When you think of it that way, gas is cheap and milk and ink don't make any damn sense

Only if people would do everything for free for the goodness and sake of society and each other. If the world were to function on the good of our hearts than money, the world would be more trouble free than it ever was. Our hearts are too troubled though, look at Verizon for example. :(

True, but your printer probably only cost $100-$200. There's a lot of tech in that low cost item. Basically they are subsidizing the price of the printer so they can get long term high profit sales.

Sounds an aweful lot like the wireless industry.

Been following the thread forever, and I really thought I was going to have a phone in hand on Friday... and was sad when I didn't (like the rest of you).

We are currently on AT&T with unlimited data and plan to switch to Verizon for the Nexus. However, I'm not feeling so much Verizon love lately... if I wanted to stay with AT&T and import a phone, how would that work? Is anyone else doing that? Just curious about my options.

:)

I imported one for use on tmobile. Once I got it i just had to pop in my SIM card. ATT would be the same, but you will be paying full retail for the phone (a lot more). For reference I payed just under $700 for mine.

still OT:

quoted for truth. a customer's attitude is largely the determining factor in how far out of my way i am willing to go for them. we have made more than our share of "complicated" items that are a far cry from anything on our menu. show a little respect, realize that you are asking a favor, and you will get exactly what you want.

i feel like i do have to say though, no matter how terrible their attitude is, there will be no shenanigans with their food. this behavior is unacceptable and even joking about it will not be tolerated under my watch. i have been furious with customers before, and while i will give them the bare minimum in service, i promise you that their meal was fine.

I agree 100% that the manufacturers make their profit on the ink/accessories but the tech in a standard printer is pretty cheap.

There's money to be spent in R&D, not much though since printers really haven't advanced THAT much in recent years, but mass production and cheap parts really bring down the costs.
Even on a $100-$200 printer the company is making a sizable profit on each sale.
Not knocking what you're saying though.
