Root Head spinning on recovery

Hello.

Okay... Where to start. First of all I read all the How To's and pretty much did every search possible. I have successfully rooted the phone using Gingerbreak. SuperOneClick just did not work. At this point I just want to flash a recovery. I downloaded ROM Manager v4.8.0.7 from the market and flashed ClockworkMod 3.2.0.1. I tried several times to back up the OE ROM and can't figure it out. I am suppose to unzip two files to SD card, flash.img and thunder something or the other. The flash.img is good, I found an unzipped file somewhere. The other one unzips to a zip file on the SD card. I that right? Tried several downloads.

I quess my question is... Is there another way to backup the phone stock ROM without those files, a kind of "All-In-One thing" with no file unzipping to SD?
Is that what ROMTools does, If so, shoud I uninstall ROM Manager?
Basicly, what is the easiest way?

I am not sure if I am going to do custom rom or just delete the bloatware crap off the phone. I did download a "Stock OS minus Bloatware" Rom, just want make sure I got a way to go back if I mess up.

I am new to this, kinda, I did install a custom ROM (Uberoid) on two Ebay Android tablet that came with a crappy OS on them. And that worked out fine... after six hours of messing with it to find the right one. I did not have to back that up because I didn't like the stock crap and fake market.:D

Usually, I can do the research and figure it out, this part has me just flustered. Any Help inpointing me in the right direction would be great. If it makes a difference, Android version is 2.2.1.

Thanks

How old is your phone? If you have 2.2.1 on it, you're probably safe with RomManager, although you should check AndyOpie150's thread on it. As for the backup of your stock system, here how you do it. Reboot into the recovery (hold down power, home and volume down when first powering on until the LG logo disappears). Now you are in the recovery, navigate using the volume keys, the camera button (to select), and the back button. Go to "backup and restore", and then select backup. Its automatic from there.

If that doesn't work, let us know. Alternately, I have backups of everything I could post, if you need. Like you, I never do anything that I can't undo!

Read the sticky "The Truth About ROM Manager".
Then read this http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/380801-guide-rooting-without-computer.html

I re-read these, and read them before. I downloaded IHOrecovery.img, and xioniarecovery.img (xionia cwma recovery version 1.2518.6 and Flash.img, the issue is with IHOrecovery.img, and xioniarecovery.img (xionia cwma recovery version 1.2518.6... I assume for backing up stock 2.2.1 do I just use the xioniarecovery fine right?, Or do I need both? The flash.img is already unzipped. The other two are in zip files, do I have to unzip them to the SD card or just move them. When I unzip to SD, they show up as still being zip files. I think I understand the other stuff.

Okay, what you have is redundant. You need IHOrecovery.img OR xioniarecovery.img, not both. I'm not sure which is better (both are good) because I have something completely different on my phone. AndyOpie150 would probably know. The backup of your stock system will be executed from within one of these, once you have it installed.

I got the phone in May or June of this year. So pretty new.
I did the reboot to recovery thing and only had four choices, backup and restore not one of them, (I believe that is the stock recovery menu)because I have not gotten proper files to to the custom recovery.

Is backing up really that important? I can download stock Rom I saw somewhere, isn't that the same thing. I would just lose my pics, and contacts, with are both backed up on my PC. Or is it more complicated than that?

Brotherswing, I know it is reduntant, I think I have overloaded my brain with searching forums, (this one mostly), youtube videos (which just make it worse), and the fear of bricking my phone. Like I said I can usualy figure anything out if I spend enough time researching. This just has so many variations I don't know which way to go.
I got your answer about which one to use, xionia recovery is for 2.2 which is what I am on now and may be going to.
I tried to unzip the file from my desktop to SD card on phone.... It will not open. Redownloaded twice same thing.

Am I supposed to unzip or just put zip file on SD as is.

Forgot to say I tried that too. Says file not found or is invalid or some BS like that.
Well, that's rude! Tell you what, I'll download it, unzip it, then upload it to my mediafire page. Give me a few and I'll post the link for you.

EDIT:: Wow! Total brain fart! The file extension is img, right? It's already unzipped!

Hope you don't mind if I jump in. The Xionia recovery version is the wrong one for 2.2.1 but fine for 2.2.2. You need 12518.4 not 6 for 2.2.1. The best recovery's for the IHO ROM'S are the CWMod recovery's and it's variations .
The IHO recovery will work. You might want to download Xionia 12518.4 and leave it on the sd card in case you ever have a recovery loop issue if you have OS 2.2.1
To determine which screen you have go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...my-first-rom-recovery-switch.html#post3550058
You need to Determine which screen you have before you continue.
You will only need two recovery's on the sd card. The one you goin to flash and the Xionia that's right for the screen that you have. Delete the rest. Rename the one your going to flash to vrecovery.img

Did you install Busybox yet?

A good rule of thumb, flash_image and recovery need to be put in an unzipped state on the sd card. Everything else stays zipped.

No, you weren't rude. I meant your phone was being rude to you! Sorry, I use a lot of humor in my posts. I just re-downloaded it, it was just the img file. If yours says .zip, you could try renaming it to .img.

I just installed busy box, I did not realize I didn't have it. The recovery is not unzipping. The screen thing, I will check in to tomorrow.

I will try that. Also just installed Busybox, which I thought I had but did not. Could that have been the issue? not sure what it does. I will try yours and AndyOpie's suggestions tommorrow or so. I will let you know.

Busybox is necessary in order to install the flash_image and recovery.
Was not aware of that. :o
Don't forget to determine what screen you have.
His phone shipped with 2.2.1, so I think he has the Novatek screen, but verifying never hurts.

Not to highjack this thread, but what are the pro's and con's of choosing one recovery over another? I thought both VM670NH and Xionia were okay for our phones, but I have been wrong before. Mostly I don't want to give bad advice, to jengler77, or anybody else for that matter.

There are no zipped files to download from that tutorial. Do not try to unzip anything.

@Andyopie, sent you a pm a while back concerning this so you would have the advice to give.

You are very correct. The OP plainly stated he was running 2.2.1
He has the Novatek screen and needs Xionia version 12518.4 on the sd card.

The xionia recovery is good for Froyo ROM'S, but not for the gingerbread.
Xionia has an option in the advanced section that fixes recovery loops, should you do something accidentally to cause one. This is why it's a must have on the sd card.

For the new IHO Gingerbread ROM'S you need to use CWMod recovery's or there variations as they seem to do a better job of cleaning up residual data from the previous ROM.

Sorry, I have been jumping around helping with 2.2.2 OS's I forgot what the OP had.
I need to figure out a way to remember as my short term seems to be going south. Think I need to worry a little about that. I hate getting older.

I was sleeping.
I know all you're stuff is good and ready to go in your tutorial .
The OP obviously didn't use you're tutorial or they would have a recovery and backup already.
My reply was meant as a "rule of thumb" and to make sure the OP was clear that recovery's and flash_image need to be in an unzipped state whenever put on the sd card, and everything else(ROM'S, kernels, themes, patches, etc.) needed to remain zipped. I have edited post to clarify.
Wasn't sure were he got the recovery's, just noticed they were having problems getting them unzipped(after reading the posts a couple times it would appear the OP's downloads are already unzipped).

I am not trying to be a P.I.T.A., or sound as if I someone who jumps in to stuff like this to keep people going in circles. I may be just missing something but, i am using mkbkr1's guide, to rooting without a computer.
*xioniarecovery.img - File Shared from Box - Free Online File Storage
*IHOrecovery.img - File Shared from Box - Free Online File Storage
**GingerBreak-v1.20.apk - File Shared from Box - Free Online File Storage
**flash_image - File Shared from Box - Free Online File Storage

*----Downloaded to pc desktop, they show up as ZIP files, at least thats what the info says.

**---Downloaded to pc desktop, they are NOT ZIP files.
I have Terminal Emulator and File Manager
I installed and rooted with Gingerbreak with no issues.
Installed BusyBox last night, I thought I had it because it was in the folder for Superoneclick that did not work to root the phone.
I got ROMManager off market and flashed ClockworksMod, If am am right I don't need this if I use mkbkr1's guide and files, correct? I can uninstall this from my phone?

RomManger and Clockworks was an afterthought , when I got stumped on your guide before I asked for help.
