Swype avail for Eris

when you download that i get a .zip? what the heck now?

It's not a zip file but if you're using winzip it may recognize it as being able to open it with winzip/winrar (which you can).

To make sure the extension is correct. Follow these steps.

My Computer
Tools Tab
Folder Options
View Tab
Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

i know that ... not on my windowz machine right now my macbook can open it too lemme see if i just move the file to my phone and see what happens

ahhhh i had to rename it with Astro

all better

except for the ... this application can not be installed on this phone.

hmmm it pays to read old posts... guess i have to uninstall the old version first

pretty and it works better.....

Didn't need to rename anything. Just visited that link with my phone, went to it, downloaded the .apk file.

Opened AndroZip, hit App Management, uninstalled Swype. Hit back.

Went into downloads folder. Opened the .apk, installed, worked. I don't know why there is renaming involved here. I wouldn't do that.

Off subject but I just wanted to thank everyone....my first post gets 11k views and almost 400 posts....This is where I pat myself on the back, lol

I must say that I've always had a twinge of regret wondering if I made the right choice getting the Eris instead of the Motorola Droid. I love the Eris except one thing. The on-screen keyboard on the Eris is slower than a hard keyboard, at least for me. Swype changes that. This app really makes the difference for me and makes the Eris everything I wanted with no compromises. I hope Swype still works as well when the Android 2.1 update comes out.

I work for a software company and feel bad about running bootlegged software. In this case I think swypinc is being disingeneous where they put out public statements saying that we shouldn't be running this software and it was obtained illegally. Yet, they continue to "leak" out version after version of updated software.

Seriously! How the hell do we keep getting updates?

I think its smart on their part. They know we want it now its up to the cell phone makers/providers to pay for it for us to have. TMO just did it on 1 of their phones. I wonder if we are missing any features from what they have.

for the version, to my understanding .35 was leaked, then 1.16xxx was leaked. It's not really that hard to leak apps once you have them. with the SDK installed on your phone (and a beta tester or not) you can backup everything off your phone, then pull your apk files and then just post away on the net. Sad yes... but most people wont bother, hackers tweakers and others will. I'd definitely pay for swype if they ever came to the market just to get the updates as they come out.

I didn't post any links because I thought that it was a no no on these forums to do so.

but I will point you to the place that points you to location of the file. Which I assume is better than some of these other posts. heh.

here you will find devs various version of Swype (what they've modified there are different versions from the .35 and 1.16 because different people have unzipped the apk files and modified stuff inside case in point pulled out help images, pulled out help files, pulled out langauges, optimized various images that really were not and more), but you have to read to get to the right stuff your looking for. Since there are at least 4 versions of the leaked 1.16xxxt

Version 1.16xxxxt is faster than the .35 versions previously leaked. I'm using the 1MB 1.16 version which is very fast, I dont need anything more than English, and I dont need help files so its very slim.

Swype for Android 1.5 - Page 20 - xda-developers

when I get some time i plan on changing swype myself for a different color scheme in photoshop so there will be yet another version posted there.

When I try to start Swype is says:

"swype package you installed does not match the screen size of the device Screen size 320x480"

How do I get it work?
Peter

Found this and thought I would pass it along to you guys as this forum has helped me so much I thought I would repay it some how. Hopefully this doesnt violate any rules since im linking to another site, if it does, Im sorry.

1. Do a google search for "Swype HVGA.apk"(File size for new one is about 7MB. Old one was 2MB. Hope this helps in your searches)
2. Transfer to your Eris via USB
3. Settings -> Application settings -> Check Unknown sources (You all prob have done this before but my n00b friends had not so I thought I would mention it anyways)
4. Use a file manager program such as Astro File Manager and go to the location you stored the .apk
5. Install
6. After install go to Settings -> Locale & Text -> Check Swype
7. Open any email/text client and hold down the text box and you will get a popup asking what you want for input. Select Swype. You only have to do this once and it will do it for all your programs.
8. Disable Audio Warnings as it seems to give errors as well located at Phone settings -> Locale & text -> Swype
9.Reboot your phone. This seems to help in not having any FC's

I recommend reading the tutorial. Helped me. This is very sick. I now love one handed emailing and texting as its so simple.

ENJOY!:)

The icon might look like a .zip file.

Just e-mail that link to your gmail account, and open your Gmail on your phone, and click the link right from there.

You probably have 'hide file extensions' turned on on your computer, and it looks like a WinZip file as a result. It's an .apk file. I promise. Don't unzip anything. Just put it on your phone.

Someone made a lite version with the .png files optimized (half the size, so the program goes faster, but almost the same quality visually) and with the other non-english languages taken out. it's around 1.2megs

Scan this with barcode scanner, then Open with Browser, then click the link provided in the post.

Maybe this is more acceptable.

Sweet. Thanks. Ill give this one a shot and update my first post with what to google for as I know they dont like direct links here

Yeah, this one is even faster and lighter than the other 1mb ones I've found.

Many versions of that 5.x meg one stripped down as far as no languages, some with no tutorial, some with no Help images

(because our phones only have space for so many apps until root!)

but this one just does EVERYTHING faster. It's perfect. No crashes. The link I sent is to the mediafire link. Rapidshare just sucks. The mediafire link can be used right from your phone. Browser on the phone doesn't like the 'countdown' given by rapidshare on our eris browser anyway.

FWIW, whenever I download these .apk's with Google Chrome, they 'fail to parse installer package' when I try to install them on my phone.

Whenever I download them right from Browser on my phone, works perfect every time!

I downloaded the Swype.apk (2mb) file...but today I checked the steps and the first post was edited to show that it's a different file now? That "lite" file I can only get on rapidshare, and i don't have an account...

does the one I dl'd still work?

try it, doesn't work just uninstall, no damage done on a bad swype install.

I just installed the lite version and it has a much smaller footprint. Its a two meg download and installs to about four megs. The five meg download installed to about twelve megs. I just typed this entire message with swype and would never type this long with the OEM keyboard.
