No way. ;) I know there will come a time when real books are no longer books, but screens people stare at and push buttons, but books are still with us, some even wood pulp free, so we can purchase or check them out at the library (yes, there are still libraries with books ;)) and read them liberal guilt free. :D

My degree is in Graphic Arts. I never had a problem. I'm also the IT department at home.

I like ebooks. I must have well over 200 public domain and Creative Commons Science Fiction books by now. Some of the new authors are pretty good.

I have no more room to put books. I've been collecting for years.

I mean, yeah, obviously many vegans would not be OK with that, but just because all Vulcans are vegan doesn't mean that all vegans are Vulcan.

I just figured I'd take this moment, since we are/aren't being sexist, and let all of you boys know that you instantly became wrong the second that any woman commented in this thread.

For any of you that don't understand why, please feel free to ask you spouse, girlfriend, significant other or married friends what I mean. ;)
 
My 0.02 I believe in general more women have phones then men. I know many of guys who either have a basic cell phone or have no cell phone at all. :eek: I also know that women tend not to be as vocal about their tech savvy as men. As men we tend to like to pee as to mark our territory. For guys its more "Look what I did" while a woman will just have hers the way she wants and if someone mentions something she'll go "yeah". I came to android from Crackberry. I have the Evo 4g rooted and am always playing on it. My wife has an Optimus S which I just rooted. Not so much for her as much as for me being able to do more to help fix some of the issues she has. I'm a lot more techy than my wife who likes to play a few games and check her email. I also know a few guys that don't even have an email.

I think there is a difference between enthusiast and trenders. enthusiast tend to want more ways to do things where as a trender just wants something that makes them look hip and important. Enthusiast have androids that are rooted and themed (all the way or even to a degree) Trenders have what ever makes them look good if it happens to be a android then its still stock and still very basic. As far as which gender goes which way I really have no clue. I do believe there are more enthusiastic women out there who just are not as vocal about it as men. I also believe there are more men into fashion than we are willing to admit.

Oh and queen I may be wrong but damn I look good doing it :p

been trying to keep up with this thread.. some post have been way to long, to read.

from my point of view... and from what I have seen...

I know that stereotypes are bad (always there is the exception).. but that is the realistic.. there is a reason what there is a stereotype.

women are more fashionable..trendy.. look at the magazines and mall shops.. MOST are tailored to women.

men are more tech, mech, hobbyist..

so.. i see more women with iphones. I even see women with more than 1 phone. yes, there are some women that have androids.. and that love tech.

men.. have more android.
 
Anecdotal reports of what friends and co-workers and others we know and see with their phones can bear out pretty much either side about the man/woman iPhone/Android, etc issues.

I still see more age group differences than gender in smartphone usage, but that too is changing rapidly.

One thing that I have noticed is more slide out keyboards in the hands of kids under say about 20 or so. It seems like they all have slide out keyboards except for those with iPhones of course.

Even that is changing a lot of kids are tired of having those mechanical keyboards tear apart on them so more and more are using touch screens. My oldest (18) wanted the evo 4g I asked if she wanted the shift instead she told me no she didn't want a keyboard that would be worthless in 6 months.

Eh, I had a slider and it was cool for say, banging out a huge email... But everyday use I'd rather a touchscreen. I like the weight loss of not having a keyboard, and how the skinnier phone sits in pocket. Oh, and I have big clumsy hands with which small keyboards just don't work. Do keyboards work better for women, who generally have smaller hands?

I think for many they do. All my friends with nails prefer them. I keep my nails pretty short so the on screen keyboards work fine. This is one of the reasons my girlfriend likes BlackBerry over Android though.

I hear ya on the breakage.. I am not exaggerating one bit when I say that my 18 year-old daughter averaged 17,000+ texts per month! Now that's she's in her first year of college, in the marching band and very busy, it's down to around 4,000. I was startled to see her pull her HTC Arrive out of her band uniform tunic and text just before going into the stadium last year. :eek:

Anyway.. there's quite a mix now, it's great to see the individuality come out in all this instead of some stereotypical stuff. Makes me wonder if Apple will diversify their phones after seeing what Android does. iPhones with slideouts? Larger screens?
 
I guess my daughter must have lightened up. We'd go through a PC keyboard in 2 months - she was heavy handed. I saw her shake a 9 foot concert grand with the opening of the "Pathetique" Only keyboard she never destroyed was an old IBM clicker.

She has managed NOT to break a cell phone keyboard. Now it's onboard.

BTW - she's blond and an almost vegan. Try that combination.

As for the engineer, PITA is one of the milder epithets when he's being particularly obtuse. Like trying to convince him his contacts were on the SIM card and he didn't have to retype when a phone crapped out.

The whole slew of results you are seeing is a repeat of that information.

But noting that 1% of users consume about half the data and given that the blogs and news services have been quite vocal about that imbalance (it's been driving the cell phone rate changes and in the news not infrequently lately) and noting that the iPhone data hogging phenomenon has had great coverage of late, I had unreasonably presumed easy access to that information.

When a population is dominated by the activities of 1% of its members, it's not terribly safe to use averages for analyses.

wait a minute.. i looked through most of your links, and i don't see any mention of iphone vs. android. i see mostly "iphones eat up more data due to siri" links... nothing that necessarily suggests that it uses more than android os. i saw a few mentions of iphone vs. RIM, but it's not 2007 anymore. in fact, in your nielsen link, it shows that androids use up more data.

Have you tried an HTC? Those are easy to set up. My wife uses one all day to manage her art studio (she's a New Mexico artist who recently moved her gallery from the row she helped start to the next art center here). She set it up all by her lonesome, isn't rooted, and has been enjoying well over a full day's normal use with plenty of battery to spare. She tweets events featured on the collective's Facebook page, does her sales calculations, manages her email list, etc etc. She doesn't use a task killer or battery manager or radio on/off widgets because everything just works. And her phone is not rooted.

I'm sure she'd be happy to help you set up your phone.

You keep talking about anecdotal data. But you also keep tossing out how much easier an iPhone is while Android is just so hard.

I have news for you, that's totally anecdotal and is a viewpoint not universally shared.

Sorry you have had trouble with your Android setup. How can we help?

you are misstating what i'm saying... i'm saying it takes more time and effort to get your device to optimally function. it's not only my opinion, but it's also steve jobs' (just google up "android fragmented steve jobs"). my point may be anecdotal, but i'm quite certain that it is the consensus. you seem to want to steer the conversation back to an individual base, while i'm trying to take it to a broader one... which, regarding this issue to me, is more appropriate.

if you think android os phones are just as easy to set up and maintan as ios ones, then i agree; there really isn't much for the both of us to say (and i mean in a broader sense, not about how your wife doesn't have your phone rooted).
 
I appreciate the opinions expressed by the late Steve Jobs on many things.

What it takes to set up Android is not one of them.

I have seen MANY threads and posts on iPhone vs. Android ease of use.

I agree that there is a shop-worn meme at play. I agree that you agree with it. I agree that you believe that there is consensus on this matter.

I believe that the meme is now nothing more than viral marketing, and I agree, a meme is nothing more an anecdote gone viral.

As I have said before, you can't paint Android in such broad strokes. I find Ios to be the most impossible software to learn. It is so simple that I can't wrap my head around it. Not to say it's bad, but I just don't get it.

And from what I quoted, why would you say it's Steve Jobs opinion as well? Of course it is, ios is his!

Compared to the iPhone, Android is fragmented. Compared to a year and a half ago, it's not at all. There are still many phone choices, but they are generally way way better than they were, and most phones are now running either froyo or gingerbread, which are very similar.
 
My girlfriend can't wait to get her hands on an Android device. She's so mad she bought the iPhone4 when it came to VZW.

The number one reason I am hearing people use for switching to Android is that they consider IOS/BlackBerry/WP7 boring.
