I got this phone preinstalled with gingerbread and I rooted it with Revolutionary. I don't have the latest hboot or software. Am I able to flash a froyo ROM and another question, what's the difference between froyo and gingerbread on the EVO. I never saw froyo

Yes, your able to flash a froyo ROM, or any version of android for that matter. I use Froyo at night with BootManager to charge.

Give warm 2.2 a try. Enjoy your SBC charging :D

What's the difference between froyo and gingerbread on this phone? Does it look the same?

I was in your boat, where my phone had come pre-installed with gingerbread. I honestly don't see a lot of differences between the two, it looks a lot like gingerbread.

I'm sure older users will be able to tell you what the differences are, but I only use it for charging so I haven't played around with it a whole lot

the only differences I noticed going from froyo to gb, was that everything worked in froyo, and battery life was good, once I updated to gb, i realized I made a terrible mistake, and wanted to go back to froyo, which was what led me to root in he 1st place! as far as appearance goes, theres really no difference from stock froyo to stock gb as far as I recall....

Well, as far as pure froyo and pure GB go, there are/were differences, but in reality, mehhh no biggie. I forget. But, with sprint's stock roms, the difference is likely just apps and all that non-sense. They'll throw blockbuster and Nova (demo) down your usb port. But roms have all that junk ripped out... so no biggie again.

And I second and third Myn's Warm 2.2! DO IT!! ;) :D

You can flash older Android version ROMs. However, you will find that you will have limited access to some apps as some of the more newer ones only work on Android 2.3/3.0

The other problem with flashing older ROMs is the lack of support for the ROM. I had unknowingly flashed some Android 2.2 ROMs and they had very little community support so any new problems that arise will need to be worked out by you or the few that are still using the ROM versions. Also some ROMs will annoy you with asking if you'd like to upgrade to their Gingerbread ROM and others will force you into updating such as some older Fresh ROMs.

The difference is more so in UI than anything else. I prefer the look of Froyo to that of Gingerbread and Eclair which are very similar. On other phones, you can see a clear link between the two and I always thought that those styles were uglier.

The upside of having an older version is that you won't have too many bugs because most of them have been worked out and/or the community has answers that you will be able to find easily.

As to how they perform...well of course Gingerbread allows more apps to be used because some will only work with Gingerbread and higher. In other areas, it's more of personal experience and can be individual to each device and user.

You can actually go back as far as Eclair if you'd like (Android 2.1) as the Evo first came on the market installed with that version so you may find some ROMs with those versions too.

Many say that Android 2.2 was a bit lighter weight and worked better on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G than Android 2.3 has. I think it has a bit to do with the increased aggressiveness of Android 2.3 dumping processes from RAM versus Android 2.2, which was less aggressive.

That being said there are security improvements in Android 2.3 and it handles concurrent garbage collection in RAM better than Android 2.2. Later point versions of Android 2.3 also allow for advanced USB modes because they were backported from Android 3.1.

We need to progress not regrees :D

why would you want to go to Froyo? What are you looking for? What's wrong with what you have?

I'm debating on going back to Warm 2.2 myself. SBC charging, lighter, and the camera in Froyo was spot-on vs the hit-or-miss camera upgrade that appeared in GB. I consistently had better pics from the older version vs the new. I also had overall better performance on Froyo, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the stability and performance from MikG's 3.0, so i haven't committed to a "backflash" yet lol And as stated before, some apps may not work, and i have a few that are necessities for work.

I'm not all into SBC charging or anything like that. I just want sense that's lighter on the battery.

Well, you'll get better battery life just based on the SBC charging by itself.

Pair that with Froyo being less battery intensive and you've got a longer lasting battery

That is true but what I've heard about the battery's not lasting so long because of it being overcharged. I kinda can't replace my battery, lol. (broke college student remember?) But I'm really considering going to Froyo. Fresh is okay but it doesn't last as long as I would like. I've looked at Warm but it doesn't appeal to me because of it's design.

There were fears when SBC charging first came out that it could cause batteries to explode, erode, ect but all of them were unfounded. Its possible that over a long time o fusing SBC the battery could become degraded, but you can get a new EVO battery on amazon for less than $5

How quickly do they become degraded and does the battery get hot with SBC charging? O_O

I bought 2 galileo batteries with a battery charger and have had no issues with SBC killing off either of my batteries since I bought them in may

2 batteries and charger for 14 bucks

I can attest to the reliability on the SBC charging myself. I've been using SBC kernels for a good part of the majority of last year up until now and loved it and never had any battery issues.

I was like you when I first began flashing kernels...I was unsure of SBC because the research I did, both on here and on other places online, had people saying that their batteries got fried after using SBC. But rarely had I ever heard of anyone here having that problem and I personally have never had the problem. I still have my old Evo's battery so if anything does happen, I have a backup, but if not, everything should be fine.

If battery is all that you are worried about, Synergy God-Mode is excellent on battery life as well as charging. My battery was on 8% battery tonight and already began shutting down sectors to conserve what little battery was left. I am a power hog too because I use my phone a large majority of the day on the highest settings with 4G and Wifi. And in under 30 minutes, my battery charged to a 40% even with me using it. It's amazing and running 2.3 Gingerbread. The battery can last for a while for me too like throughout the day and doesn't run down quickly. But the quick charge is what really makes me love this ROM. It's pretty fast too and I bet if I partition my SD card it'd be even faster.

Well, that Boot Manager app is only a few bucks and with it you could have both. Sbc kernel friendly rom to charge on and swap over to your daily driver quite easily.

Of course, you could just flash back and forth with nands.

So what would some old heads suggest as a good combo of this type?

I think Rxpert and a few others are on Warm 2.2 with the Netarchy Toastmod SBC kernel.

I flashed it last week to check it out. It looked nice. Probably the biggest issue was that if you want to actually use it all of the apps need to be updated.

I deleted the slot that I had it in but I've still got the Rom on my SD card so I may flash it again.

I read on XDA that there was a Boot Manager lite that will let you have a total of 2 slots. One for the phone rom and then 1 other slot to flash something into. It's supposed to be free in the market. I haven't looked for it though.
