Root Metro pcs Store bricked my phone

Toohype

Lurker
I took my Rooted LG Esteem Phone to the Metro PCS Store to have them look at my You tube App because it would only Stream on Wifi, One of the employee there bricked my phone Who is at fault?

technically you would be at fault

your phone was rooted, and you rooted it

how did the employee brick your phone? thats what has me all confused

edit:
if it was rooted they shouldnt touch it, however if he didnt know then thats a different story, and it all relies on the store, if he knew and worked on it, i would think he should have partial blame, but not full, as you were the one who rooted it... sorry bud

True, although root shouldnt had anything to do with it getting bricked, still fault would lay with the OP as he voided the warranty, 'technically' ;)

What did the metro employee say about it? And wtf did he/she do to your phone?

Both are to blame. You can't give someone a fully loaded gun, then blame the shooter, only. You rooted the phone, he "bricked" it, ya both pay >=]

Why would you take a rooted esteem to metro expecting them to troubleshoot your phone, you do know your warranty to them is considered void when you root....

Thats not a issue with MetroPCS, why would you take it to them ? Thats a issue with your applications. I know of people who had this issue, in the end the outcome was another application causing the problem, such as a antivirus app, task killer app, etc.

Uninstall any 3rd party system apps such as task killers ,etc and see if that fixes your issue.

Your at fault, you voided your warranty when you rooted your phone. Metro should have checked it before they touched it, however they are not responsible since the phone was "modified" prior to you bringing it in for service that was un-warrantied.

And if it was just your youtube messing up why not uninstall the app first, than re download it and see if the problem still has been resolve. Or open your browser and go to youtube from there.

Just run the LG support tool updater install the new zvc rom and root it with PGs. Zvc root. Problem should be fixed.

Or try gbiggies thread

you should always unroot before you take your phone in to metro or send it to LG. I really want to know how they bricked it though..

My guess is is if he has a different rom installed and a factory data wipe/reset was done through the settings vs hard reset. Or cwm.

Happened to be one gingersteem.

Luckily I had cwm and the rom.zip on my SD card.

Not sure about the OP's case.

technically you would be at fault

Technically and legally the employee is at fault. Would you be at fault if you customized your car, took it to an auto technician to have some unrelated work done and he blew your engine? Didn't think so.

EDIT: In any case Metro owes him no less than a new handset if the other one cannot be fixed.

I see your point but I don't think that theory is solid. If the mechanic new what was customized he'd double guess what he was about to replace, fix, tune, etc. As in, if the rep knew the phone was rooted, they would have said right off the bat, sorry can't do anything and have a great day (my guess).

Seem's the OP didn't actually say anything (hiding-lying-trying to slide by) till after the fact (the reset). If the rep was following protocol without the 'i rooted' my device info, how would they have known.

IMO - you mess with stuff you're not fully educated on (or are) you take that risk. ;) If the OP presented the phone issue differently I'm sure the help would have been different.

just my two cents.

Last time i check when you buy a new car any customizing you do on performance voids your warranty. & it has to be taken to an Authorized dealer you brought it from.

That is not true, the only time they can void your warranty if they can prove the part caused the malfunction, there is a law that protects consumers of that, I forget what the act is called. Lets say you slap on an aftermarket exhaust and you happen to throw a valve in the engine, they are not gonna void your warranty because common sense would say a lousy bolt on exhaust is not going to cause you to throw a valve, just saying.

The LAST place Im going with a problem is the Metro store. The Metro Stores in my area hire mentally challenged 3rd world Country employees that have no clue as to what they are doing beyond activation. To me, rooted or not, it's your own fault for going there and not seeking help elsewhere................like here. :)

Hope it all gets worked out for you. Hopefully this is a lesson learned for you.

(No offense to mentally challenged, 3rd World Country people or idiots for that matter) :D

The device being rooted or not makes no difference, the employee bricked the phone and therefor MetroPCS is liable for the cost of replacement.

EDIT: And if you bring your vehicle in to a mechanic because you are having a problem they would do a diagnostic before performing any work, and you would have to sign off on any work that is to be done.

your statement "the device being rooted or not makes no difference"..well it does. Rooted deivce = warranty voided. At this point it's regardless who did the bricking the phone was already out of warranty..lol

If the phone wasn't rooted, and who knows how the OP setup up his device after he rooted it, it would have reset as normal. Not that hard.

the OP wasn't clear, mostly likely the OP new the phone was not in warranty (given the root disclaimers). Left that information out when talking to the rep; came to get help and from what it seems the OP posted, the help was being done and without telling the rep first hand that the device was rooted, it's the op's fault. If that information was disclosed, and the rep new their job, the phone wouldn't have been touched.

Either way, the OP can get the phone back to normal, just needs to read and follow the guides on this forum. Good luck OP!! ;)

It's not very clear and he hasn't come back to clarify, but if he didn't tell the rep the phone was rooted, the rep tried to fix it and bricked it, wouldn't the rep replace it under warranty? I assume the only thing he told the rep was that he was having problems with Youtube. If he left it at that, how would the rep know it was rooted and out of warranty?

You're right the op isn't being clear. That's the problem. Lol but the op did say he took his rooted phone to the metropcs store.

Who knows what was said at the counter. Lol

I would have replaced it if I was helping him just cause I'm an android fan or I also would have fixed the issue without a wipe. But that's me. Hope the op gets it restored. :D

Dealers can't really be expected to check a phone for root for every little issue that comes through the door. It is even possible to hide superuser in the app drawer on some launchers. It's up to the customer to say the phone has been rooted and then the dealer can decide if they want to proceed ... or not.

From what I have seen, most problems are not hardware or network related. The source of the trouble is usually a rogue app (could be oem - but most likely from the market)... or a customer who needs some coaching on how to use the device. It's also unreasonable to expect a dealer to troubleshoot every shady or misconfigured app that the customer has downloaded to their phone to see if that is causing the problem. Thats why god invented the factory reset :D Gets back to square one and solves any issue created by reckless downloading.

Sounds like it is fixable, tho.

The phone being rooted makes all the difference. If the employee didn't know it was rooted, and factory reset through settings, which is in fact the proper way to do it, then how is it even remotely his fault? The blame goes to the OP for knowingly taking a rooted phone to the MetroPCS store in the first place.regardless of how it was bricked. everyone knows we void our warranty when we root. So people need to stop taking rooted phones back to the store for help. Its just more ammunition for them to try to find new ways to block root. why should they lose money replacing phones that people willingly alter?

Has anyone realized that ever since he started the post he hasn't followed up? We still wondering wtf the metro employee did to "brick" your phone -_____-

Idk, maybe I'm too suspicious .. but I'm calling b.s. on this whole story. Main reason being.. how did the Rep brick the phone? Only thing I can think of is he tried a factory reset.. however cwm recovery would have came up when he tried. Don't you think at that point the Rep would have handed the phone back and said sorry, can't help ya?

Its just an inconceivable story is all. Unlikely in the very least. I'd like to know exactly how the phone got bricked.
