Root [ROM][WIP]CM7 Port for Vortex VS660

With the 1.19.12 release, I can totally rotate. Occasionally it gets stuck on landscape, but for the most part it seems to work fine for me.

--with the GNM kernel. hopefully bobzhome will work out the bugs in his kernel so GNMs won't be needed (and will have better performance?)

So I'm still on the same build, and here are the issues still plaguing this little Vortex... (Not sure if they're Android based, CM7 based, App Dev based or what, but I wanted to report them anyway...)

1. Cooliris crashes 2 out of 3 times when attempting to view gallery contents. Sometimes waiting for everything to load allows it to work, most of the time it doesn't, and crashes anyway.

i second the gallery crashing problem! whenever u scroll through gallery it seems to crash sometimes!

I just want to say this made my phone a whole lot better and thanks for the support. wish i could donate to you but im still a minor but close to 18. Also how to do you fix the auto rotate on the phone its pretty hard to text my gf

I've been searching for answers to some questions without much luck. So if these have been answered forgive me.

I rooted with gingerbreak and installed the latest version.

What I noticed is my phone says its roaming under the status screen. It didn't before I flashed it. I don't get any indicator other than another app saying its roaming.

Is it actually roaming or is this just a glitch? If it is how does that work? I'm using page plus on the Verizon network in my town so i shouldn't be roaming.

The GPS won't work. I tried a fix in an earlier post which didn't work.

Of course the camera doesn't work but I haven't tried any fixes.

The phone wouldn't wake consistantly. I changed settings and got around that.

I did see that my signal strength seems to have improved. It went from 1 bar in my living room to 3 after I flashed it.

I flashed back to stock until I can figure this out.

Thanks for any ideas. And thanks to everyone who put so much work into this.

Ok with much testing on the latest build 1/19/12. I messes around either to make it work with what I need it for. First off download the ROM with the latest gapps. Also pick up the overclock kernel, you will need it to overright the kernel the ROM comes with. You will also need set-cpu app from either the market or from XDA. Pay for it and help out the dev for a great app. Reboot into recovery and wipe everything except your sd card. Then go into mount and mount data then go back and wipe it. Do the same for system it will give the ROM a clean slate to build on. If you have the recent recovery go into others and fix permissions. Then flash the ROM and gaps then reboot. Skip and continue to you get to the home screen. Go into system settings-cm settings-display and disable screen-on and screen-off animation. Then go back to the main stem settings -display-screen time out and set it to 30 mins. Let the phone sit for 15 mins or longer to settle in the reboot into recovery. Clear only the cache and dalvic-cache the flash the signed_vortex_oc.zip and reboot system. Let the phone settle in again, you can reboot the phone every 15 min, I did mine about 3 times. Everything works except the camera which I hope he gets it running on the nexted build. Hope this helps. To overclock the kernel use the set-cpu app. You can also setup a set profile for the kernel to run at. At this point google is your friend. Enjoy

Add on just did the camera fix on post #139 and now have a fully working phone. Post updates if anything changes.

3 days of and still stable. WIF tether working great, lockscreen working terrific, and camera has been doing great also. If someone want this for the phone read through the entire tread. You will have to piece things together, reboot, and clear cache and dalvic-cache when stuff gets buggy. Also dumped Lancher Pro and went with ADW, just because of the ICS theme. Thanks alot for all the hard work with your build Bob, when I get a chance I will add on a nandoid to this post if they will let me.

Those links seem to be working fine

edit so I don't add another post: All of those links seem to be working fine, including the one for the kernel. I canceled the download halfway through, no 404.

grrrrrr ok i had cm7 loaded in my vortex, working fine, but i forgot to save my contacts on vcard... so i rebooted to and old set up and vcarded my numbers.... reflashed cm7 , and now it locks up at opening screen :( wtf any suggestions?

Okay, as I said before, my phone is unactivatable, just in case it might be the problem.

It's connected to wifi, but I can't sync my Google account to it, and the market isn't showing up, even after wiping and flashing gapps (Latest and Custom).

EDIT: I just found out that the only fix for the black screen when trying to wake the phone is to use a different lock screen app. I tried GO Locker and the problem vanished. I guess try WidgetLocker or something. So we now know that the black screen issue is in the lockscreen.

If you go into the cyan mod settings under display, turn off the screen on off animation that will help the black screen issue ;)
o yea try fixing your ext in recovery..then reflash gapps

By fixing it, those two were already disabled, but the phone actually wakes itself up, as in shows the lockscreen without touching the screen. Like how it's supposed to. I'll try the gapps again later. Thanks for the info!

All cm7 did for my phone, was brick it....( that was fun with no debugging available) :-( fixed that.... But I sure wish I cld use this rom.... Heard good things....

visit the link in my signature that I'll be adding soon, there is a full video walk-thru on rooting, installing recovery, and flashing roms for the vortex

jacob..... i actually had it installed and running for a day ( using ur info ) i was trying to show a friend how the recovery works, and instead of going to recovery it just restored to factory ..... and recovery would no longer work... i started over , reinstalled recovery ( which then worked ) flashed cm7 and it instantly bricked my phone.... so i had to use adb and some trickery to get my phone to unbrick.... now its just rooted and i only do recovery from adb ...... sick of resetting all my presets..... so i did the install like suggested, just second time everything went to crap :(

Error: Error downloading "Voice Search". There is insufficient space on the device.

I know there is enough space though. I'm attaching a logcat I ran while trying to install Voice Search. There are other apps but I don't remember what they were.

Had the same problem a few times with no reason with several apps, I've tried to delete dalvik caches, uninstalled largest apps I had, but the solution each time was the same, uninstall this app and install it again. I was afraid at first since I could leave my device without current app, but it was ok

Here is how to get everything working.

1. Flash the ROM and gapps

2. Flash GNM Kernel (fixes sensors & rotation)

3. Flash Camera Fix (provided by Kappacat)

4. Start rom and immediately disable screen animations in Settings>Cyanogenmod Settings>Display

5. Remove 01mvdalvik file in /system/etc/init.d use ES File Explorer with root/system write permissions enabled in app settings. (fixes market issues)

6. Wipe dalvik cache and cache in recovery. Then clear market cache in Settings>Applications

7. Remove camera_click.ogg and VideoRecord.ogg in /system/media/audio/ui (fixes no audio when recording video)

8. Finally enjoy your rom.

All this information can found throughout this thread, it's just scattered. Follow these steps and it will work properly.

First: Great Job! This phone is snappier than ever and has much more available memory than previously!

Issues: I am unable to get the phone to rotate. This I can live with. Mostly I have lost USB connection. Any ideas?

Re-installed with the 1.19.12 version. Rotation issues solved. The 1.19.12 version is not on the OP. Still no usb connection, however.

I can nand restore back to previous ROM and get it to connect. With CM7 When connecting to windows it shows a drive F: but when you click on this drive, it say's "please insert disk". Linux does not even see the phone. Any Ideas?

I have a question, is it just me or when I was flashing the 1.19.12 rom that it would have a semi non-responsive power button when the screen is off? i did everything from flashing the rom and the gapps first then the gnm kernel and then the camera fix. that is the only thing that is irking me from doing the full install? did I do something wrong?

That could be a known issue when using GNM kernel. Sometimes it takes a second for the screen to turn on. If the buttons light up and the screen doesn't turn on, it usually needs a touch on the screen. Just watch that the screen is still receiving input, so tapping the screen might press a button. Or, you can start sliding to unlock the screen before its on.
