Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Ok, I'm new here, and I tried finding someone else that might have already asked this question, but couldn't So... I have just unlocked my bootloader, and I extracted the recovery.img to my android folder I created when unlocking. I did the "C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and got this:
C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3544 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.082s]
writing 'recovery'...

But now it's just sitting there. I'm not sure if I should try to close it and start again, cause I'm afraid of bricking my phone. Can anybody please help?

Thanks in advance!

Update:
I was scrolling through the bootloader screen, and it didn't like that, so it gave me this:

C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3544 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.082s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (status read failed (Unknown error))
finished. total time: 3509.136s

3,509 seconds! what am I doing wrong?

I have Android Flasher running now instead of the command line from windows, and it's just sitting there saying "Please wait while your phone is flashed".

I have my phone open in the fastboot menu, and at the top it shows:
*** UNLOCKED ***
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
MICROP-041F
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.12.19

FASTBOOT USB

I don't know if this matters, but I'm running Virtualbox with a Windows XP VM. I have checked and the USB is connected to the VM, so I can't think of what else I'm missing.

I just installed on a 100% Windows XP system, with the latest HTC sync, downladed a fresh copy of AF, and the recovery.img, same results... It just sits there saying "Please wait"

The link here has something that might be related to my situation, but it really doesn't answer my issue. I have tried both methods Command line:

C:\Android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3544 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.082s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (status read failed (Unknown error))
finished. total time: 3509.136s

And with the android flasher. Both of them just sit there while writing the recovery image. Could you please be a bit more specific?
Thanks.

Are you suggesting to start with the taco root method, or are you saying there is another method to flash the recovery?

no there is another method that you can use that i have not added to the guide yet. and that is to use a PC36IMG file and get the bootloader to install the recovery. you can get the directions here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. go to the switching recoveries section for instructions on how to get recovery installed.

Ok, I tried the method through htcdev it didn't work I'm assuming at no fault other than my own lol. But now I'm trying the taco root method and after putting in the first command from the list I get device not found. I have it set to charge only, I boot to recovery but after the red triangle it doesn't ask me to boot again it just turns on. I also have fastboot off and I have usb debugging mode turned on. I extracted mtd_eng and flash_img directly to the sd card not in a folder. What am I doing wrong

Ok so I bought an HTc Evo 4G from a guy on craigslist and the phones ESN was clean but the problem is that it was for boost mobile. And I tried many things from pressing pound keys and trying to unroot it with softwares but i get a bunch of errors and im kind of tired of trying to do it myself without actually addressing the real issue and getting some real help. So basicaaly this phone is for boost and I want to get it to work for sprint again and I have the 2.3.5 Gingerbreaad on this phone. I need help please give me some help step by step if possible. Thanks alot and it is very appreciated.

I go all the way threw all of the bootload unlocker I submit my token to htc dev and kicks back an error this frustrating the heck out of me any ideas

I am new rooting my Evo 4G phone, I completed the HTCdev method and got to flash a rom - vr superwipe -and everything seemed fine during installation until I tried to reboot my phone, it won't get past the Fastboot page. Thanks in advanced

Do you have a link to the exact ROM you were trying to flash? Did you confirm you got a good download?

Current ROM (BootManager Slot 2): Evervolv-ICS-2.1.0-Preview-12 - Kernel: Mason-v0.14-ICS-SBC-FSO

ok i think that you are confused. vr superwipe is not a rom. it is a script that you flash in recovery.

hi, im new to the forums but ive had my evo since the day it came out. I just unlocked it with the htcdev method because i figured i was out of warranty anyway. It didn't say to back up everything before hand, i guess i probobly should have though about that. But I lost everything, anyway to get all of that back, I also just did the recovery not the flasher way, i did it through command prompt. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!
sorry, but the only thing you can recover is your contacts if they were synced with google. and anything on your sd card will be fine. your apps data and sms and mms would have been wiped during the unlocking process. no way to recover that. but now that you are rooted, you can start using titanium backup to back up your apps data.

Thanks for the info, man that really sucks, I had several hundred contacts on there. htc should really put some notice on those instructions for noobs like me who don't realize that. O well, Ill have to try to pull them off my old phone if I can find it. Recomendation for my first ROM?

ok, new question, i downloaded root checker and it said no root access, i also downloaded titanium back up root and it said no root access, i definitely completed the htc dev method, i am unlocked with s-on and hboot 2.18.0001. whats up? So did i have more steps to complete to have root access?

i really like how google has made it very easy to keep your contacts. if you saved them under google rather then phone then any android phone you get from now on will have all of the numbers ported to your new phone. fortunately, with gingerbread it should automatically port over once you sign in. maybe try and and resync google again or flash a custom rom.

if you want to try a rom, i would try mikg3.11. it is sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked in. give it a go and let us know what you think.

I'm at step 5 with the recommended method on HTCdev site. I ran the Android SDK manager and it comes up with not only the Android SDK tools and Adroid SDK Platform-Tools, but also a separate folder for Android 4.0.3 (API15) with subdirectories of "Documentation for Android SDK; SDK Platform; Samples for SDK; ARM EABI v7a System Image; Sources of Android SDK"

Do I install those packages as well? The directions don't say to install them but they come up pre-checked and the directions show an older rev7 rather than the rev17 that is current.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Scott
