Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Ok so i tried factory reset that didnt work
so i tried doing the taco root downloaded everything i got to the part where you have to go to cmd again and this came up
C:\Users\bob\Desktop\Android>adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
Do you know what it means?
and what i could do to fix it?

well it sounds like it is having issues with communicating with your device. do you have usb debugging turned on? is your phone set to charge only?

Have you had any issues with your SD card? Maybe try and copy the contents of the card to your pc, then reformat the card. Copy said contents back and try again. I swear sometimes its the weirdest things that fix this stuff.
Another thing, make sure your AntiVirus protection is turned off, that might be messing with your connection.

i dont think i had any problems with it but i can try it, but how do you reformat it?

ok i tried everything you guys suggested i went on other forums and still cant do it idk what is going wrong. if you have any more suggestions let me know

Hi guys...I finally took the plunge and rooted my Evo *yay me!!*
I followed all direction and everything went flawlessly. I first read through the instructions and downloaded all I had to download first and then proceeded with instructions.
My question is, how can I tell I rooted my phone?
I mean I see my new rom (MikG 3.11 as recommended by OP) when I boot my phone but...hmm...I guess if I HAVE a different ROM that already means I'm rooted *facepalm* LMAO

Ok ok...my next question (at the risk of it being a dumb one) how do I go about restoring all the apps I had prior to rooting my phone? Do I need to reinstall all again?
What about my saved profiles...are those gone?
And lastly, now that I had updated my ROM, can I delete all the stuff I added to my SD card including the nandroid (I can save it on my laptop...it's huge!).
Thanks for all the help!

Edit:
I just noticed something, in the quick setting task bar the task manager says I have a total of 404MB, 288MB used and 116MB free. Yet inside of setting-applications it says 124MB used and 304MB free. Are those two different types of memory/storage?
One of the major reasons I rooted my phone is because I was super low on memory and wanted to get rid of all the bloatware...

I am a new member with a quick question. I have Hboot 2.18.001 Locked S-Off but no root. I want to root. I would rather not have a watermark. My question is which of the options should I follow and are there steps that I should skip since I am already S-off? Sorry if this is a newb question I researched it but couldnt find an answer.

Welcome to the forums!:D

How did you end up with S-OFF?

Do you have a custom recovery on the phone? If you have a custom recovery you can simply flash a rooted ROM.

If you don't have a custom recovery, you can put Amon RA on there and then proceed to flash a rooted ROM.

The rooting for dummies guide has LOTS of information and step by step instructions for doing anything. You are already S-off so don't worry about the rooting steps. Read the flashing and switching recovery steps.

Instructions for putting amon Ra on the phone(if you dont have a custom recovery):
you can get the recovery here:PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip
here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Instructions for flashing a ROM:
here is what you do to flash a rom:
1.first you need the vr superwipe:ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*
2.download the rom of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select install (or flash depending on which recovery you have) zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and flash it.(optional)
8.find your rom and flash it.
9.reboot.

first boot will take a bit longer then normal, so be patient.

I was rooted before. I ran a ruu to unroot myself. Then did all the updates and somehow ended up with S-off still. So if I flash a new rooted rom, that should be it? I am still rooted then?

Well the RUU doesn't unroot you, it just puts a stock ROM and recovery on the phone.

Also, you should NEVER accept an OTA while rooted, and should NEVER unroot in order to accept an OTA then re-root.

You can flash any version of android you want, you don't need to unroot to do so.

You can just flash a rooted ROM and are good to go if you have a custom recovery

No need to be concerned about the watermark. As long as it says "LOCKED (OOW)" at the top, you can turn S-ON and it can still be serviced by Sprint with no worries (though I doubt anyone's EVO is still under warranty, at this point).

Sorry for such a newb question, but helping an Evo 4G owner who wants root. He doesn't know the first thing about S-off etc and would have no need for it.

In order to get him root, he just needs to do the HTC Unlock process and then flash a recovery and then he can go on with flashing Rom's etc to his hearts content via amonRA recovery? No need to do other commands via fastboot or anything like that right?

Correct. In order to unroot though (for warranty repairs, no need to do it for any other reason), he will need to fully gain S-off and downgrade the bootloader.

If no insurance this isnt a problem

Thanks. Just wanted to confirm before I help him obtain root.

edit: Does running the HTC Unlock wipe the phone?

Need help. I'm getting corrupted file message each time I attempt to extract the files from the flash_image.zip and mtd-eng.zip downloads. I've tried to find them elsewhere with no such luck. I couldn only find the ones pointed to themikmik.com.

I could be wrong after all I'm no novice, however make sure the zip files download entirely as I noticed I had to download MikG's ROM file twice because the first try downloaded partially.
HTH

Ok i have a really dumb question. ok i unlocked my bootloader finally now i dont know what rom to use lol.i wanted to get CyanogenMod. i dont know if its good or not can someone help me pick out a good rom.
Oh and can you link me where to download it at to
Thank you guys for your help

The OP suggested MikG's ROM so that's what I went for. I downloaded it from their site.
The current version is 3.11 and thus far I am very satisfied.
