Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Hello, Never downloaded OTA anything and was never prompted to do so before. I had a rooted evo 4g previously and just received a replacement with hboot 2.18.0001. Now I'm discovering the complicated method in getting back what I enjoyed. I have a few questions...
First, I'm following the directions from HTC but there are a few discrepancies in the images they've posted concerniing the screenshots with the Andriod SDK Manager stuff. My download doesn't have some of the folders after a few times redownloading. The menu screens after opening up SDK manager doesn't look like anything I have, some stuff matches close, but there's nothing showing what EXACTLY I need. BIG difference, is htc has on their site " android sdk and avd manager" and what I downloaded is just sdk manager! WTF??
When I go to update and download tools and sdk platform, what I see on my screen and from what I see on htc website doesn't match up. I'd expect this information to match exactly and follow word for word with whats on their site to what I see on my screen. Is this a gross oversight on their part and piss poor updating or is something definitely wrong? I'll have screenshots for comparison soon. I'd like to know if what I have/see is incorrect or just a 'normal' variance?
Is there an updated procedure with a more updated detail to it? I can't imagine this is the only procedure. Everything else I've seen references this htc guide. It's like everyone gave up on a good solid guide. No good procedure from an actual user other than "go here" ... With my old evo, everything was spelled out and I was up and running in less than 3 hours, now I'm wasting my time wondering if something's wrong because image comparisons don't match up.
I work in a Customer Service environment and clear descriptive and detailed instructions are paramount to my job. When I send instructions out, I NEVER have questions because everything's written from the perspective that everyone's a moron. Dummies guide this is not.

***1st edit***
So I DL the files specified. I find the andriod files I need (adb, adbwinapi, and fastboot) ALL in the same folder. Is this right??? The instructions say fastboot is in a different folder separate from the other 2. I'm assuming this is a poorly written guide now... If anyone has some input, by all means let me know.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
i think why there is a difference is that the android sdk keeps getting updates so things may have some new stuff now. basically you want three files in the android folder that you should have created as per their instructions. they are adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, and fastboot.exe. if you are having trouble you can bring up the taco root method. I have the three files there if you need them.

I'm back again lol. well i rooted my phone and downloaded a custom rom to flash. after it finished my phone decided to get stuck on an infinite rebooting screen were it just starts over and over again. i'm not sure what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! Just sounds to me like perhaps you either did not wipe well before you flashed or got some sort of bad download.

Which recovery do you have? We sort of favor Amon Ra 2.3 in here for starters. it is pretty reliable.

Did you follow the directions in the guide for wiping? Have you tried the VR Superwipe? That helps as well.

I would suggest trying that and re flashing the rom, see if that helps.

ok i'll try it but i do have one question. How do you put the file on your SD card? The way i did it was plugging the phone into the computer then selecting mounting it as a hard drive. Since the phone doesn't start up, How do i put the recovery file onto my phone without going through that process?

you can do this in recovery.

for amon ra 2.3:
toggle ms-usb

for clockwork mod:
mounts and storage>mount usb storage

and like dusty said make sure you wipe well and use the superwipe file before re-flashing the rom

before we do anything make sure that you have disbaled fastboot. on you phone go to settings>apps>uncheck the fastboot option at the bottom. now press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader screen.
All this does is make my phone vibrate and brings up the regular shutdown options screen. Does this not work any more?

Thanks, but I did have fast boot disabled. I'm just not getting what you guys are getting. I'm just getting the regular shutdown screen by holding the power button and the volume down button together.

try to press the power button first then press the vol down button. it should work. if not then pull the battery out.

Tried all that, and still nothing but regular shut down screen. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have an original Evo from launch. Is there any other way to find out the information that method provides?

no this should work on all evo's. not sure what is wrong. but you can always just pull the battery out and then press and hold power+vol down. just hold them until the screen changes. it may take like 10-15 secs. just keep holding it down.

also what are you exactly trying to do?

It sounds like you are doing this with the phone still on that is why you need to pull the battery then hold power and volume down to power the phone on. Not to power it off.

Hi Wg88, did you get through?
The phone has to be completely off thus the reason you're been asked to pull the battery out. Once you put back in the battery (& put back on the cover ;) ) hold down the vol down button first and while holding the vol down button simultaneously press the power button. Hold for a few seconds and release when the screen comes alive. Tada! You're in recovery.
Hope that helps.
But just in case...some visual never hurt anyone...at around 1:20 he starts in recovery.
How to Backup/Restore ROMs on HTC Evo 3D! - YouTube

ok, need help. I am new and made it to step 10. I am trying to flash amon ra recovery. Have downloaded 4-5 different ones. From this thread, even older ones. When I boot into bootloader it starts and in green letters (goes so fast) I see NO IMAGE. then it goes back to hboot. It does not down grade to 2.10. Any suggestions thanks for the help.....figanno

where is my manors?:o

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

scratch the above method. that is the wrong PC36IMG file. you will have to use a different way. there are two ways (well three but i need to hunt down the correct PC36IMG file, gonna pm captain for it). but here is what you need to do. (this is taken from the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

here is what you should do, taken from this guide:
How to get Recovery
here is a little more details on how to get a recovery onto your phone. there is a couple ways of doing it. you can use the fastboot command to install recovery or you can use the android flasher program. either way, it is pretty simple. i will leave the decision up to you.

method 1

you can install amon ra 2.3 by the following:
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the recovery.img file and place it in the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

method 2

how to install amon ra2.3 with android flasher
Android Flasher, what is this and how do i use this?

well with android flasher, you can flash radios, your splash screen (that is what the htc white screen is called right before sprint's boot animation), and your recovery. you will need to extract the .img file from the .zip file. in this case i will show you how to install a custom recovery amon ra2.3.

so here is what you will need to do:
1.download android flasher from here:
AF Downloader
2.and extract it to someplace on your desktop where you can find it.
3.next you will need to download amon ra 2.3from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
4.extract the img.file and place it some where you will be able to find it.
5.run android flasher
6.go to the recovery slot and select browse and then navigate to the amon ra .img file
7.select it and then select recovery
8.then at the very bottom select flash

congrats!!!!!! you now have amon ra 2.3 installed.

using Captain Throwback. Do I rename the whole zip or just the .img file

sorry about the confusion no renaming involved. you just need to extract the file and move it to the android folder and then in the command window enter the command.

or you could use the android flasher to flash the recovery img file.

either way will work.

Still the same error no image

USB debugging is checked
Fast boot unchecked
all steps prior were done
in step 9 using abd shell after imputing the three commands everything looked just like the instructions.

any suggestions

this is not done in the bootloader. this is done on your pc by entering the command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

in the android folder. do you have the .img file there?

you can always try method 2 by using the android flasher.
