Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Hey, I'm back again lol. I'm still new to this whole rooting thing. there is a couple of things i'm trying to figure out, i guess the first thing is how do i tell what senses i have? i looked in the roms and kernel download page and i see different sense with the gingerbread update but i'm not sure how to find out which one i have

Hi Wg88, did you get through?
The phone has to be completely off thus the reason you're been asked to pull the battery out. Once you put back in the battery (& put back on the cover ;) ) hold down the vol down button first and while holding the vol down button simultaneously press the power button. Hold for a few seconds and release when the screen comes alive. Tada! You're in recovery.
Hope that helps.
But just in case...some visual never hurt anyone...at around 1:20 he starts in recovery.

Thanks for that. I guess I'm a little dense. Once I turned phone off completely and did it, it worked.

BTW...what does it mean for the hboot to be watermarked? I noticed in the original post that he mentioned that.

In the top left corner of the h boot screen it will say locked or unlocked with a pink highlight.

First off, thank you guys for a great and well put together guide.
However, I'm having a little trouble near the end of the journey. I just followed everything from HTCDev and completed Capt_Throwback's method. All the steps went somewhat smooth, have HBOOT 2.10, S-OFF along with everything else although I'm a little concerned about one thing:

If I press Pwr + Vol Down it automatically does:
SD Checking...
Loading... [PC36DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading... [PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading... [PC36IMG.zip]

After about 10 seconds it defaults to:

Parsing... [SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER
[2] RADIO_V2
[3] BOOT
etc
[8] WiMAX
Do you want to start update? -No
Do you want to reboot? -No

Then I can go into FASBOOT or RECOVERY etc etc...

This doesn't seem normal. Any thoughts?

When selecting the bootloader unlock via HTC dev, the step says the phone will be "reset to factory settings"... Does this refer to just the bootloader or the entire phone? Its my wife's phone and to lose her apps, settings, and data would be detrimental to my health!

Yes, the HTC dev method wipes all data. You will lose all apps. I'm not sure if Taco ROOT wipes data or not, hopefully someone else who has done that method can confirm or deny.

Tacoroot wipes all also. All you can do is back up everything possible with nonroot apps from the market and contacts either to the sd card of google. then copy the sd card to the pc. Not sure about game data and stuff like that but purchesd apps from the market will be able to redownload with out paying again.

6.navigate to the android sdk r-12 folder and run the sdk manager.exe file
7.wait 3 minutes and then only update android sdk platform toolsand android sdk tools

I am trying to do this step but when I install using the sdk manager it keeps saying "done nothing was installed" idk what to do.

Am I doing something wrong?
Or are the:
adb.exe
fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
I downloaded before the one that it is going to be downloading?

Edit: I reinstalled it and it seems to be working now.

Edit 2: Okay,I got it working now to move on the the next step.

You can download App List Backup from the market. It does NOT backup your apps (you need to be rooted for that I believe) but it will backup a list of all your apps which you can then redownload from the market which Apps List links you directly to.
Bear in mind a couple of things, if you have an app which is no longer in the market, you'll loose it as you obviously wont have a link to the download page. Such was the case with ShootMe for me :(
The App List Backup worked great for me because I was able to redownload just the apps I actually wanted back and not every single app I had in my phone...which let's be honest, we always download a bunch of crap we don't use...at least at the beginning :D

Hello, new to the fourm. however been reading for some time. I'm hoping someone can answer my question.

I followed the htc method about a month ago. I have root with SU installed CWM installed. stayed with factory ROM. I've decided to load a different ROM. I have tried a coupl and they all seem to stop about half way through and will not boot up.

I would suggest switching from CWM to AmonRa 2.3
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip

Then Change the file name to PC36IMG
Boot in to Hboot (hold Vol down + Power)
Wait a second or two and when prompted to update Hit Vol Up for yes.
Let it re-boot.
Then boot into Recovery.
Then try to flash your rom form .zip

I would suggest flashing SuperWipe first then flashing the rom.

Goodluck.

Should also state, have tried with and without wiping cache and data

ok sounds like you are not wiping correctly. you need to wipe a minimum of dalvik cache (found under advanced in clockwork mod), cache, and data. and like what lltalentzll said you should definitely switched to amon ra as your recovery. clockwork mod IMO just does not wipe well.

here is a guide that will help you out. it has intsructions on how to properly flash a rom as well as how to switch recoveries: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the rooting part as you are already rooted.

hope this helps.

As ocn stated you: did not wipe correctly. Very same problem I and many others had when flashing our first roms.

Look at the guide ocn linked. It has great info for anything root related and step by step directions for nearly anything.

I would also suggest switching your recovery if you don't have amon ra as was described above.

I am doing the TacoRoot method and when I booted into recovery after putting the PC36IMG on the root of the sd card, it says Main Version is older! Update Fail!
What is the problem?

Thank you so much for the replys... here's what's happened

put in RA Recovery instead. would not load from bootloader, said it was too old. so loaded it as alternative recovery from CWM app.

I was wiping dalvik and data and cache with CWM in recovery. superwipe would not run all the way.

After changing to RA, wiping all, then running Superwipe (successfull after ra)

AOKP Supersonic 30 , loading through RA runs, (doesn't seem long enough) says complete, upon reboot just hangs at initial boot screen, left for 20 minutes. started over. same thing

Elegancia_ICS_Phoenix has Aroma bulit in, wiped everything, ran superwipe. this one runs through an interface, gets to 40% and drops back to hboot.

I know it's something simple. always is. Laugh

Again, thank you so much for suggestions.

Hello,
OCN Thank you for the Guide. This is where I started. My bigest problem was not knowing the lingo as I am a super nooob. Root of sd, what it meant to flash and what being Fully rooted actually meant. It would be nice to have a Rooting dictionary.

Big thanks to Captain, Chad, and MIk for the schooling.:)
I am now running MIk Runny V1.0 with anthrax kernel and RA Supersonic 3.11

Nice glad everything worked out for you. Just so you know we have an awesome sticky st the to of this forum that had a bunch of links to very helpful threads including one with rout terminology. check it out.

Update.

thinking maybe, just maybe there was something wrong with the ROMs I had been trying, downloaded Miks latest 3.11

wiped dalvik in RA.
ran superwipe three times
flashed Mik's 3.11 installed and booted right up

I did check all zip files with WinRar on the SDcard all passed.

Thanks again for all suggestions.

you need to not only wipe dalvik cache, but also cache and at least data ( some wipe everything except for sd card). you can then flash superwipe and then the rom.

Hey Gurus... having an issue. Using the HTCDev unlocker at step 12 I'm getting this little gem...

c:\Android>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.168s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
FAILED (remote: unlock token check failed)
finished. total time: 0.174s

why do I suck?
