The difference is in the radios and not the software. But if you can put the Desire ROM on the Droid, then you're good to go!
HTC Sense on Droid from HTC Desire | Redmond Pie

Thanks for the reply! To me that's the obvious way to go. I actually prefer form factor of the N1 to the Desire and if I'm able to have Sense on it as well, then that's a bonus!

I think now that the cat's out of the bag you're going to see a lot of folks swap the ROM out that want Sense running on top of Android and compatibility with Microsoft Exchange and Outlook.

Google wouldn't make a huge mistake like not including Calendar support. I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, regarding Google's alleged admission to failing on their online-only selling. Google has plenty of cash to burn and the N1 wasn't designed to make money. They just wanted to break even with the hardware but test the marketing of such phone online-only to see the response. They figured, what better way than to lump this marketing test with the release of the successor to the G1. That is what the N1 is anyway, successor to the G1.

I do think Google has plenty of cash. The PRIMARY reason for the N1 might not have been to make money, but I bet it is the number 2 or 3 reason and they are hoping it will generate some giddy green. I'm sorry, I may be wrong, I often am, but I don't see why any company would spend the time, money, resources, (end up creating new employment positions. In this case customer service manager for the phone support, and numerous other customer service support reps), deal with the customer service backlack issues, etc if they didn't/don't plan on making some money from something.

I know they want to get Android out there, shake up the market, etc, but in todays economy (even if you are rich as *hit) you aren't going to do something this expensive/complex for *hits and giggles or waste money. Especially if you run the risk of angering a lot of people who up to this point love your company.

I personally think Google thought that jumping into the phone game was easier than it looked and thought they were gonna get in and everyone was gonna go buck wild over what they wanted to do or how they were/are going to change the game.

I think they have found out, it isn't quite as easy, but they are on to something and even though immediately it might not make a huge impact, with time and adjusting things (i.e. their business model possibly) they could really blow *hit up! Why take a big risk in pissing a lot of people off with their poor customer service and handling of phone issues (and imagine if things were even worse) just to test the waters and see the response? I think if that were the reason they would have gone about it in a little safer way..

Even if they do offer the N1 in store, they are still doing something totally different than any other carrier in the U.S. and different from their biggest competitor, Apple. It would only benefit them MORE to offer the N1 in stores. It would reach out to more people, more advertising, less customer service backlack on them. It would make their lives easier, while still achieiving for unlocked phones and providing a CHOICE for consumers to deal with the service providers or not to.

just my .02 cents, well maybe .03, it was kinda long :o

Among the other warnings earlier in the thread you will not be getting OTA updates if you root and rom. Just something to remember.

Going along with my post above:

You can only force stuff on the consumer to an extent. You can believe, "This is what the consumer wants", but in reality, sometimes it may be, "This is what I want". If Google saw after the launch, "Yeah consumers do want to see the device in person first, test it. Consumers do like going to the service provider and purchasing the phone. They do like getting their phone serviced there" then they might think, "Why try to fight it? Give the people what they want".

I think maybe Google short-changed themselves thinking they had to do it the way they did/have, like service providers would want more control or balk at Google and it could be the opposite. If Apple is doing what they want and look what happened with the iPhone, than whats to say a company like Verizon who is iPhoneless won't be more willing to try something different (from what they, meaning Verizon, typically do) and let Google have more control over the phone and handle things how they (Google) want to. Ya know?

Okay, fellow droidaholics, potentially big news here. I was just doing some computer work on a new netbook my boss got from Verizon, along with a Droid for his daughter. I've been telling him all about the Incredible, so he decided to start asking questions to his VZW rep. I don't know if it was the multiple purchases that loosened his lips, but here's what he was told in a nutshell.

What new Android phones are coming out soon?
"we're expecting 6 new android phones coming soon"

I've heard something about a release on the 23rd of this month
"I can neither confirm nor deny that"

That's the most important parts of it. He also mentioned he outright denied several things, so "neither confirm nor deny" might be more indicative of a yes in this instance. I'll be back later for further discussion. In a hurry right now. I know VZW reps are unreliable and take info from us lol, but still, seems worth noting. As does the alleged 6 Droids coming. That may also imply that this thing will be rebadged HTC Droid Incredible or some such name. I haven't had time to read anything since last night, so I hope this doesn't fly in the face of stronger info. Just thought I'd share. Later, people.

That kinda goes along with the first e-mail I received back from VZW saying they were testing several new devices. Nice, thanks man.

Yeah but wasn't AT&T basically on the ropes when the iPhone was brought to them (2nd after Verizon turned it down). It behooved AT&T to allow Apple to basically control everything. Take the iPhone away from AT&T or just give it to Verizon and they are done for.

Google doesn't have the design clout or the lemming/fanboy fanbase that Apple does/did at that time.

Google also is going at this 3 years after Apple has already established themselves and the problem is that they aren't really bringing anything revolutionary to the table (UI, design, apps etc). They are basically playing catch-up and unless they give the people what they want (even Apple missed several basic features when first launched but there was only one iPhone.....several Android devices have come out and that's the main issue) then people really aren't that impressed with Android.

Apple is playing it perfectly. One device, one new iteration per year and add what is missing each year. That's why people are STILL getting it on AT&t regardless of their spotty 3G coverage. It's like Google is the Master P of the cell phone world. You don't have to put out anything great....just put out a whole bunch of mediocrity and the volume will take care of the $$ piece.

i know that this is the incredible forum, and i am a new poster, but i have been reading and lurking since oct/nov....Long story and i am sure few will not believe me but i have seen and played with a 4.3" 1gz android device for verizon from motorola. i was told to expect it this june. The phone did have verizon branding. I am located in the northern suburbs of chicago. The guy who had the phone is some sort of programmer/developer for MOT.

can anyone confirm this. i am very anxious for the N1/incredible/etc. it is very hard to keep waiting....

Most likely the Moto Shadow. Also looks like a great phone.

 I am going absolutely nuts trying to figure out what the hell to do and right now in all honesty......as much as I hate to admit it the iPhone is looking like the best option for apps, business use and multimedia. Sure the network is crap but where I live it's not.

I just hate Apple with a passion. But lately my company discount (I have one with Verizon too) is making me think the iPhone could be the device for me. I just don't want to admit it yet

I know man, I can agree with you. I have same feelings at times. I like Android and the being able to customize and the freeness it brings, I also like the iPhone form factor, ease of use, and simplicity. ATT is a big deterent for me though. Their service isn't bad where I live/travel, but it isn't as good as Verizon. For me, I just DO NOT want to spend the money on a device and be unhappy with it and/or the service. I have never owned a smartphone and this is a big deal for me. I want to be completely satisfied with the device. I feel like I would with an iPhone, but if the service sucks big time, then what's the point?

That is why I am hoping Android and HTC prove I can be completely satisfied with the release of the Incredible and N1.

Did you happen to notice what operating system was running on it? Android? Window Mobile? Details!

There is talk of this mythical beast over at Howard Forums in the Verizon/Smartphone/Android forum. They seem to have a Moto spy feeding them morsels of information which they devour like seagulls. (kind of like us here with our Flickr and twitter trolling)

it was running android. had a camera in the middle of the phone (on the back). i would have taken a picture, but i had my bb8830 with no effing camera....he was shooting video of our kids playing hockey. unfrotunately our season is over, and he doesnt speak the best english.

Over/under 3 days before Engadget has a story running on this and people start showing up at kids hockey games in Chicago.

This sounds awesome, but my disbelief can only be suspended so far...

Updated first post with more updated info and easy guide to confirmed vs. unconfirmed. Please let me know (PM) of any necessary edits.

Well the first thing to do is look at videos of the 2 OS's. For me the Iphone only have page after page of apps does squat for me. Also if you get an iphone, you're just going to get an Iphone. No options like you have for Android (i.e Stock, Sense, Blur).
Also can you get a 1 year or month to month contract on AT&T? Maybe thats not important but both are available on Verizon and I dont think AT&T gives you the option.
15 days til the 23rd. Something should be known by then, just wait it out 2 weeks. Or buy something and hope within 30 days you get news and can return it.
