Root EVO Discontinued? 2nd best?

JEast

Newbie
Wife took her phone to the Sprint store (LA, Westwood) to see if they would fix/replace her cracked screen. She was told that they didn't carry parts anymore because the EVO4G was discontinued. I consider myself a flashaholic and can't imagine losing out on all of the knowledge in this forum if we had to "upgrade." Can anyone confirm? I'm going to try to replace her screen or if unsuccessful, buy another EVO from ebay. It got me thinking, what's the 2nd best android for forum and developer support for rooting and customization?

So, what happens if your phone is broken and you take it into the Sprint store? Is it still replaced with a refurb or do you get a new, different phone? I've always heard that if they discontinue, and no longer carry your phone that you get a newer model but I've never experienced this or even heard of anybody else experiencing it.

I tried fixing the spider-web screen once, a couple of pieces of advice.

1) The digitizer is glued to the screen. Replace both is my advice.

2) Murphy's law is in full effect.

3) Be ready to go to the store and get a replacement with some attitude.

I had to upgrade one of my lines to replace the evo. Not fun at all and the representatives gave me such a hassle even though I had that 1 yr upgrade eligibility. I'm not trying to scare you but let you know of the potential risk you're taking in repairing the evo.

yeah i took my upgrade to the 3vo and i am very happy. i still use my og evo to flash roms and as my mp3 player amon other things. the dev community is not bad. not nearly as developed, but it is getting stronger. some of the devs who were from the og evo community has moved over to the 3vo. i will say this, that the evo dev community is one of a kind. no where will you ever see a great community of devs developing for one phone like that again. we are all spoiled in how there is just so many awesomes devs for the og evo.

personally i really like the 3vo. battery life is way better then the og evo and with the quad core you can overclocking like no other. this phone just flies. my only grip is the smaller screen. it makes texting or even swyping more difficult.

this is a sad day... a sad day indeed. the evo is/was a sort of a anomaly in that its followers are/were devout and relentless. I know that it had alot to do with the hardware being soooo over developed which is proven by the fact that its almost 2 years on and is still kickin like no other phones. This has been one hell of a ride and am glad that i made the decision to get this rather than the stupid droid x (the competitor at the time)

The Sprint variant of the One X is rumored to be announced April 4th. Its only expected to have dual cores though.

Its probably going to be branded with EVO with a release date in June like the others.

All I can hope for is whatever I end up jumping ship for is what all the rest of you do as well :o

:D

The Sprint variant of the One X is rumored to be announced April 4th. Its only expected to have dual cores though.

Just about everything I've read on the One X has said that the dual core chip is very competitive with the Quad. Only on the best display is the quad really better.
Also it seems that the Quad core chips may get bumped to the 4th quarter of 2012 rather than coming out this quarter.

The One X looks great and has really good stats except that it doesn't seem to have an SD Card slot and the battery is not removable. The memory space may not be much of an issue but the battery? Not sure I like that.

If I can't replace the battery when I want to, or get an extended version, I don't want it. :(

From what I've read recently, the reason manufactures are going to a non-removable battery is because when they don't have to manufacture a replaceable battery that's rectangular or symmetrical, they can make the phone much thinner by shaping the battery around other internal parts.

The EVO 4G is about 14 mm thick. My wife's Samsung Epic 4G Touch is 10.16 mm (and I thought that was thin). The X is 8.9 mm, or about 7/16 of an inch.

And the battery is 1800 mAh.

I wish the evo was a bit thinner, so that the case would be thinner ;D

Also, I'm really looking forward to what phones are around when my upgrade comes through.

Gonna be a good time for phones. Too bad that nothing will really get the support of the evo (IMO)...

Oh well.

+1 ^^^ The support and options we have is incredible!! I did some poking around over in the Droid forum for my x, she was kinda interested in rooting and what I saw was nothing like the home we have here. While the prospect of the new phones is exciting I'm kinda mixed about leaving the Evo 4G, thankfully I have until December. :D

Update: Wife took the phone to a different Sprint store (Beverly Center). Guys there told her that if there were only a few cracks, they would replace it. Since it's a large spiderweb (1/3 of the screen) it was too "hazardous" for the tech to repair. I guess their fancy tech is worried about chipping his nail polish!

Although my subject line asked for the 2nd best, I know I'm not ready to move on from our EVOs yet. Looks like I'll be doing it myself with a screen purchased on EBAY!

I hope that works out well for you! Let us know, ok?

There are some youtube videos about doing stuff like that, have you seen them? They might be of some help to you.

The ONE was supposed to be announced today. I haven't checked in to see if it has or not since I've been super busy this week but I would look into finding another phone to get by till that is available:D

didnt read the whole thread..but my wife cracked her screen today..sprint store, like stated does not stock EVO parts anymore...had to call the insurance company, a new phone is on the way...dont know if its an evo or what tho..
