Root [Guide] How to flash the ZV9 update, for the technically challenged

Just want to say thanks so much for this Brotherswing!

Ran through this just now and worked like a charm!

I wasn't going to bother at first since it seemed like a huge hassle, but even though I'm very new at all this I'm quickly slipping into flash junkie mode. I also figured it was worth a try since I've had problems with only getting 1 bar at home, and also some sudden problems with my home wi-fi taking forever to connect and then disconnecting...so thought this might fix it. Seems to so far. 2 bars now and wi-fi holding strong. Haven't tested GPS.

Only slight snag I ran into (using Ubuntu, not Windows), was the last part of the Gordita.sh script didn't complete properly. I have a feeling maybe the sleep 10 part was a bit too short? So the last 2 commands didn't actually get done the first time. But I just pasted them in one-by-one to make sure I saw what was happening and worked perfect.

Cheers!
Hi. My name is AndyOpie150 and I'm a recovery, kernel, ROM flashing addict. I would like to be your sponsor. We meet here everyday at the oddest hours and fall off the wagon more times than not.

PS: We frequently help each other out with our addictions (keep this under you hate though)

That is the BobZohme modified CWMod recovery (VM670NH_recovery.img)

I've gone through the whole ZV9 flash upgrade process and am back at the jerryscript BACKside-IHO-VM670-05022012 ROM. All seems to be well.

However - after sifting through the AndroidCentral forums it is clear that having the correct recovery is very critical when flashing updates and ROMS.

My recovery presently shows up as "CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.5".

My question is - is this the Bobzhome recovery I installed per the Stage 1 instructions, or is this a different recovery installed by gordita.bat in Stage 2? I think the latter, but how would I know?

If it is the gordita.bat recovery then what are the implications for when I want to update the ROM or switch to other ROMS?

Can I just reinstall the Bobzhome recovery now? Or do I even need to?

So what is the deal with gordita.bat? I looks like it is installing a recovery. Would that not overwrite the BobZohme one?

EDIT: "...got two good eyes but just don't see..." Gordita.bat clearly reinstalls VM670NH_recovery.img

I believe it is re-installing the recovery for you, since the security update essentially makes your phone stock again.

Yes, it does. Gordita gives you back a custom recovery, but after the update you can safely use any compatible recovery you wish.

I believe my phone has a compromised image.

Therefore, wouldn't I want to avoid creating a recovery from the current image? Right?

What I want to do is wipe the phone COMPLETELY clean and install an untouched, clean OEM Image. Going back completely stock would do me just fine. Right now I cannot use my phone because it goes though GB's of data even if I do not use ANY data for the month. And also kills the battery extremely fast even if I do not use it at all.

Fort Lauderdale area. Anyone that can re-flash this thing for me for under $51 near by?

If you follow all of stage one in this guide you'll be running 100% stock unrooted

Hey guys!

My roommate's V happened to break the other day and he bought a new one. They now come preloaded with the security update. As the flashing expert, I have been tasked to do it for him. I just wanted to make sure I can follow this guide from the second half of the steps (after flashing the radio) and going from there.

Thanks for the guide btw!

Somehow I missed this while searching for the radio update. I need any help with signal I can get. This worked for me on ArchLinux. They includes a bash script, thank gordita for me!

What does "boot into recovery" mean>? Sorry....
Boot into recovery means this:
The ROM is one OS, the recovery is another smaller OS that is used for installing a custom ROM, making and restoring nandroid backups, and Quit a few other things.
Just like Booting into your ROM, you can boot into you recovery.
You have several options for booting into your recovery.
1. Hold Home+Volume down button, then press the power button (hold them all at the same time). When you see your recovery menu screen let go of the buttons.
2. From a terminal emulator on the phone type in this:
su
reboot recovery
(Hit the enter key after each line.)
3. From a command prompt on your PC type in this:
adb shell
reboot recovery
(Sometimes you need to type in su after the adb shell if you don't get a # after typing in adb shell)
4. Most custom ROMs have this option built into the ROM.
When you press and hold the power button a window will pop up that will give you the option to reboot the ROM, reboot into recovery, reboot into the bootloader(very few have this option), and power off.

I went through the ZV9 process detailed here a few weeks ago, kind of to see what the new stock ROM was like. Hated it still and went to the latest JerryScript IHO Backside. The phone has been kind of flaky though, so I went through the entire ZV9 process again, and again installed the JerryScript Backside 05022012 ROM. But now my phone hangs at the boot animation screen. I cannot boot into the OS.

Ideas please? I can run the ZV9 upgrade and boot into the stock ROM, but I want to go back to Backside.

My recovery shows up as "CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.5" which I understand is the BobZohme recovery VM670NH_recovery.img

Did you format boot, system, data cache, and wipe dalvik cache? If not boot into recovery, go down to mounts and storage and wipe boot, cache, data and system. Then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache. Then flash Backside and gapps. Then after you get it to boot, I recomend doing a nandroid backup.

No I didn't do anything except wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.

However I just formatted everything per your instructions and was able to boot to the JerryScript Backside 05022012 ROM.

Thanks!

When going from one rom to another, you sould always wipe boot, cache, data, system, and dalvik cache. If you don't then the files from the two roms will merge and sometimes the files are slightly different, and there would be extra files. Then when you go to boot your phone it would be like dude wtf do I do with these extra files? Oh hey I can't load this file... etc.

Edit: Oh I forgot, if it's just an update of the rom you are curently running, you only have to wipe cache and dalvik cache.

Its been a while since I've done any thing with my optimus v. I have both a stock nandroid b/u and jerry's iho cm7 (from a few months ago). Here is my question:
If I simply go to vm's site download the zip and follow their instructions will this take me back to a pure stock recovery, unrooted rom, and new radio fixes?

Then can I simply root, use flash image gui app to flash a new recovery, then do a clean download and install of the latest iho from Jerry?

May seem like a more of a mess than the method listed at the top of the thread but having dog slow dial up internet home (2k p/second, not a typo, yes 2k p/second) and no vm coverage at home makes the connection to PC stuff a problem. I'd rather do everything from the phone it self at work where I get excellent signal on my v.
