Root Moving Dalvik Cache to SD Card

yeoliji

Newbie
Is it safe to move the Dalvik Cache on the SD Card? Or is there a better way to do this? I give my apologies if this has been asked numerous time. I just want to be sure and certain before I do things that could give me headaches :D

Also, I am not sure if I can but I want to use the A2SDGUI which is pre-loaded on the ROM I am using. I wanted to free as much space as I can.

Once again thank you to all who never tire in helping each other. The very reason why I loved my EVO and this forum :p

Sure it is. I did it. Is your sd card partitioned? Which rom are you on.?
I used terminal emulator to move my cache/dalvik to sd card.
I don't use that A2SDGUI at all, I do it all in Terminal Emulator.
:)

Edit: check out my thread about a2sd and my experiment in post 9

As Mike stated, moving Dalvik cache to sd ext is worth doing. Although most say a higher class sdcard is recommended, it's not required.

As far as a2sdgui is concerned, no issues using the app. Especially if the developer of the rom has preloaded the app, he/she must have faith that the application will not cause any issues;)

95% of the time moving Dalvic to SDEXT is safe and every bit worth it. There are on an occassion a hiccup. Some ROMS for what ever reason will act up with Dalvic on SD not sure why but have seen a few reports about it. I do believe that most if not all the ROMS out right now will have no issue. I have been running Dalvic on SD for a while now and personally have not had any issues.

I am using the recently updated Energy ROM. (Energy ROM Sense 3.5 Sensation XL 06282012) and the memory card I have is a G Skill 32 GB Class 6. I partitioned it using the guide I found in XDA.

Thank you for all the information. It really helps to hear from you guys. I will definitely try it and just in case I will just make a back-up if something goes bananas :D

By the way, The new ROM is really nice. Though battery is kind of better on the previous version I think. But its super smooth and responsive :)

I gave it a try, I chose to move to Dalvik to SDEXT then accepted and rebooted but nothing happened.. :(

I did it like twice but nothing is happening. Still the same status. I don't know if I did something wrong but I'm really clueless here

Anyone experienced this?

If Terminal Emulator is a better option I guess I will just use it instead. I guess I will be needing to read more about how it works and how to use it. Is the one included on the ROM toolbox the same thing?

I use terminal emulator...the app....but the one from rom toolbox should work.
How did you move it?
Does that rom have darktremors a2sd included in it?
If not you can flash it.
There are some commands you can use to move cache/dalvik to sd-ext in term. em.
But first we need to find out if DTa2sd is being utilized or not.
Do you have Titanium Backup? That will usually list at the bottom, your storage space and how it changes when apps are installed or when you move dalvik.
There are also commands you can run to see if cache/dalvik is linked to sd-ext....
So, I guess first thing to ask is, is darktremors already there?
Lets check....
In terminal emulator type the following (then hit enter after every line)
su
a2sd check
You should see some results....tell me what comes up:)

Thanks for the quick response guys.

I tried to run the commands that you guys had provided, But it always gives me a " command not found error " I am not sure if its because I am typing in all caps, But I can't seem to switch to lower case. Its just stuck in upper case

I did some researching and I read that the developer is still fixing this. It seems to be one of the bugs he is still taking care of since its just newly updated.

I would like to thank all of you guys for all of this useful information. I think I will make this a part of my flashing routine as I have heard a lot of good things about it.

Thank you so much to all! You guys just made my day here :)

i'm not really a big fan of these all in one apps to be honest. i like apps that are dedicated to a specific task. they just seem to work well. for me setcpu, titanium backup, and terminal emulator are must haves for root users. rom toolbox seems very nice and shiny, but i do not always trust it to do what the specific apps do for the specific tasks being done. i guess i'm a little old school, but those apps never failed me. plus once you partitioned the card, who cares how many apps it takes to do what you want them to do. but that is up to you guys what you want to do with your phones.

sorry just wanted to throw my two cents on these apps that claim to do everything ie rom toolbox.

I do agree. Set CPU and Titanium Backup has always been a favorite of mine. Terminal Emulator and Battery Monitor Widget is catching up on my list.

I gave ROM toolbox a try cause it came free on one of the ROM's I flashed last week (I think it was Blue Merge) It sounds convenient to have an all in one app that does it all.

But after my experience with its built in Terminal Emulator not too long ago.. I think I am letting it go. (Really hate it when apps don't do what they're saying they can do) :(

Right now, I guess I'm back in flash land once again. I am trying out the JoyOSRevamped V2.2 which gives EVO users an Iphone feel.. (Well I just wanna tease my Iphone friends) LOL :D
