Root Loving my EVO 4g again

ahdrom

Newbie
Ever since I rooted my phone following the great guide posted here, I find myself loving my phone again. To the point, I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon (even though I'm eligible for a free upgrade).

But I have a couple of questions.
I'm currently using MikG v3.11 and Pnuema's ICS theme. The theme really works great with my wallpaper and my favorite HTC clock widget.
Anyway, I've been "toying" with maybe trying some other ROMs and themes. I've looked when I could at work (read: at break time *wink*). But I'll be honest, I'm lost. I've looked and looked and googled until my eyes wanted to bleed.

So I was hoping someone could help with some suggestions of ROMs and or themes I could take for a spin. Thanks :)

I've found this to be helpful to find roms and info on roms:)

Edit: see my sig for my current rom etc.
I was on mikG before this one.

Thanks guys :)
I actually seen that page you linked Mikestony in my searches. One thing I was hoping for, and maybe I wasn't looking at the right links, was pics of what each ROM looks like. Maybe I just need to give one a try and see what happens, lol.

This also reminds me, I forgot a question. Does it matter, if I start down one path and then switch? As in, I'm using right now a "sense" ROM and I decide to give an AOSP ROM a try?
Oh ya, also apps2sd, everything I've read said I need to partition my SD card to use. I am semi hoping that is not the case, but figured I'd ask here before I do something dumb, lol.
What I might do, is get a new SD card, so partitioning doesn't bother me. I'm just glad I finally decided to root. I've only had the phone for 2yrs :p Guess, better late then never is good :)

You can switch from sense to AOSP...I did when I went from Mik to Decks.
Just backup before you flash, if you no likey new rom, wipe and restore.:)
You dont have to partition sd card, it just frees up alot of internal space especially if you have alot of apps.
If/when you get a new card, then I highly recommend you partition.
Once done, you wont regret it when used in conjunction with DarkTremors a2sd.!:)
I do recommend 16GB class 6 or higher tho.
I use 32GB class 10 (a little overkill but that's the way I roll):p

Lol! I was looking at going with a 16GB class 6. I'll probably get it tomorrow when I'm in BB.

One last question, which I forgot to ask, and I'll be done for now, promise! :)
Kernels, do I really need one of them? And is that something that can be undone if I decide to stick with the stock kernel?

Kernels can and often do work wonders. The new line of Mason kernels seem to be quite awesome and come in many flavors to suit your every need. There are SBC ones, standard ones, vanilla, strawberry, and double chocolate chip lol anyways, yes, kernels do make a huge difference. Just make sure you're using the right kernel with the right type of rom. I actually still prefer the tiamat kernels for aosp roms

Dam! chocolate? Gotta find that one! lol
Funny.
I ran Anthrax kernel with MikG
I run Mason kernel with Decks.
You can switch kernels all you want, as often as you want.
Kernels vary with phones so ymmv.
What works for me may not for you...give a kernel a few days, then judge.:)
Like youdoofus said, there are many to choose from...too bad no flavors tho.:D

Psst Mike, you dont have to wipe before nand restoring, as it automatically does that for you ;)

Also, you can pick up a 16gb class 10 for around $15 online (amazon). Normal retail stores are gonna be expensive.

Really??? Seriously didn't know that:eek: Ive been doing it wrong all along:banghead:

Thanks everyone!
After I get a SD card, I think I'll give that reloaded a try.
I did some google searches and from what I read, the nandroid backup saves the kernel. If that's the case, I'm in great shape, as I have 1 backup of my EVO before I flashed MikG v3.11 with the original kernel and now one with MikG and the same kernel. Now I feel better experimenting with kernels, lol :P

*edit* I'm also toying with the idea of trying an ICS ROM. But it seems all of the ICS ROMs I've seen are still not very "stable". Or am I missing one that is?

Its not wrong, but its not required. :p
Hmmmm...now you got me thinkin!
So, I am on an AOSP rom, but have a nand backup of a sense rom.
I can boot into recovery and without wiping anything, restore that sense backup?
Does that data, when in the process of restoring, overwrite as it restores?
Hence, wiping is not required?
Or does the recovery wipe, then restore, automatically?
And what happens when the original backup is corrupt, I unwittingly try to restore a corrupt backup, will my current rom/setup etc still be intact? If it will remain intact, then I best not manually wipe before a restore in case my nand backup is fudged!

ICS roms look nice but some things don't work like 4G, the Front facing camera and video. Netflix/Hulu also don't work. It depends on you and what you need to work. I have MIUI/ICS on an EVO that is not connected to any phone service and it's nice. If Netflix and video would work, I would keep it on there or use it myself

Ics Roms are stable, there's just a few things not working as mentioned above.

Mike, I believe it wipes as it restores. I'm not entirely sure the exact process but the phone gets wiped
