[Verizon] [MOD] Battery Booster

p-bOt

Android Expert
This is a tweaked sysctl.conf file found in system/etc folder. I brought this over from the Esteem forum.

This file is universal! I test all my mods myself so i can confirm that it will flash fine and it will not mess up your phone!

WHAT THIS MOD DOES
This mod should give you longer battery life while the phone is idle. I CANNOT HELP IT IF YOU ARE STREAMING NETFLIX ON 4G WHILE OVERCLOCKED AT 7GHz, AND USING NAVIGATION! lol. So be nice if you are that guy/girl.

anyways...any feedback is welcome. I have tested this for a few days and i was pleased with the results, but i am only one person. :)

enjoy.

FLASHING INSTRUCTIONS
-ok first you need to go into your root browser of choice and navigate to

/system/etc

-now check and see if you have a folder named init.d

-if you do then flash BATTERY BOOSTER in recovery

-if you dont then flash ALTERNATE BATTERY BOOSTER in recovery

THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS MOD!!!

you do not have to wipe anything! it is set in the updater script to wipe cache and dalvik for you ;)

ALTERNATE BATTERY BOOSTER!!!

AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT:

BATTERY BOOSTER REMOVER!!!

I too am curious to know what it does (cuts off data while phone is idle? etc...). I wouldn't mind giving this a shot tonight but need some more info =)

Yes it is definitely on the kernel level. And it boosts performance as well as battery life mostly through memory management. There are so many tweaks in this file that it would be hard to give the run down of them all. To put it in perspective for you: there were 6 lines or so in the original sysctl.config file. But now there are over 90 lol. But a little further reading for you (and where I got most of my info) here is a link :)

I have no such file in /system/etc. Searched for sysctl.conf at / level and came up with no hits. You sure this has been tested on a Gnex? Specifically one running OS 4.x?

I tested it myself lol. Open the system folder then the etc folder and it should be one of the last files at the bottom. :) its def there ;)

its def there ;)

Not for me. Maybe it's because I'm on a custom rom though? (BAMF)

Wtf?? I'm on bamf too...I'll look into it and see what's going on

EDIT- OK there is something weird going on here. I looked into the zip for BAMF and you were right sysctl.conf is NOT there. But when I made this mod I was on XenonHD...which DOES have it...idk why BAMF doesn't have it...but I am running BAMF as of yesterday when it was released and I flashed it over BAMF and it still worked so no worries there. I'm just lost as to why it was removed from the ROM in the first place. Lol.

BUT I can confirm that it works and will flash fine over BAMF :)

Does anyone have any real life numbers for results? Will I see 10% better battery performance? An extra hour or two? Etc...

Granted I know it's different for everyone what with their configuration and apps installed. I'm just curious as to what I could generally expect to see here. I'm running BB 7/19 toro. Thanks!

Well this is more geared toward losing as little battery as possible while the phone is IDLE. there is little hope for battery when using the phone extensively lol. But to put a number on it.

I went to bed last night at about midnight with a battery percentage of 87% and when I woke up at 9 am. Battery was 85% with this mod.

here is a screen shot of so stats from "better battery stats" on the playstore (great app)

so as you can see my phone has been on about 12 hours (i have been using it constantly since i got up at 9) the deep sleep is at 8 hours screen on is about 3h 45min. so it stays in deep sleep for about as long as the phone is idle.

and looking at the regular battery stats

Screenshot_2012-07-26-13-29-27.png

you can see that the phone woke up veerrryyyy briefly a few times while the screen was off more than likely due to emails because i always get emails at all hours of the day and night. soooo not bad.

JellyBean from what ive seen has a really good deep sleep and the most properly functioning deep sleep of any android os that i have seen. ICS not so much tho...so this mod will probably help alot more on ICS roms.

i have been using my phone extensively today because of my day off :D as you can tell by the graph lol. But you can also see by the graph that during the idle period the battery was conserved very well...so with moderate use you could make your battery last pretty much as long as you wanted to :)

hope this answers so questions

and yes this was on stock BAMF. no other mods made as of yet. I am planning on trying out a few build prop edits to boost it a little more but i doubt it will have a huge effect. I am also underclocked to 920mhz (no lag at all) on interactive governor and i have set a screen off profile of max 350/min 350 with interactive governor (not sure if you even need to set profiles with interactive governor...but it doesnt hurt lol)

20 mins since unplugged and I've got 88% deep sleep. Good numbers since yesterday on BAMF I was only getting about 60%. We'll see how it does throughout the day but so far so good

Wow, That is impressive!

So another question, since Bugless Beast doesn't have this file, Couldn't I essentially "install" or "uninstall it" by simply copying it to the appropriate folder via ES File Explorer or something of the like? Or is it not so simple?

yes you could :) that is actually how initially tested this mod because i wasnt quite familiar with how the updater script should be coded being that i was coming from a device that had ext4 and the nexus does not have ext4.

but yes you can just pull it out of the zip file and push it with your file manager of choice if you want. But even if your ROM lacks the file YOU CAN STILL FLASH IN RECOVERY :D. I flashed it over BAMF (which lacks the file for some reason) in recovery and it took just fine :)

but if you choose to push via a file manager i would still recommend booting straight into recovery and wiping cache and dalvik. whereas if you choose to flash your cache and dalvik will automatically be wiped via the updater script :D
