Telus Galaxy S2 (T989D) Ultimate Root and Optimization Guide with Steps

Yes, TWRP is great and what I use. Yes, you would install a zip in recovery like you did superuser. Just make sure that it is made to do that and made for this phone. Do you have a link where you got it?

Another, and easy, way is to download GooManager from the play store. Install and open it. Tap your menu button and then select 'install openrecoveryscript'. Wait until it tells you it has been installed and you will have TWRP.

That's great. I'll install the zip as per installing for Superuser. I got it from this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/qibb4qrp4zdc76a/TWRP-2.3.1.1-hercules.zip and hope this is the correct file for SG2X T989D

If I download from GooManager, will the TWRP install is from latest version? Reason why I'm saying this is that from the description, it says it's version 2.1.2

Yes, I just checked. It will install TWRP 2.3.1.1

Hi, this thread has been very helpful, but I've have two problems:

1. I keeping getting errors when trying to mount usbstorage, or /sdcard, or anything in recovery. I imagine this can be fixed by flashing another recovery?

2. I'm new to Odin, but i was able to flash the recovery. I cant figure out how to flash the ROM. I downloaded the stock ROM in the guide, but when I try to unzip it fails to extract the odin file saying that the file is either corrupt, or i have a bad password. Tips?

Hi batkbatk and welcome to the forums. :hello:

You do not extract the rom zip files and you don't use Odin to flash roms. You just install the zip in recovery. Read through this guide for flashing roms. I think it will help a lot. At the bottom of the post is how to install the TWRP recovery. I recommend doing that.

btw .. did you install the superuser file after you Odin'ed the recovery?

Thanks. I thought odin was another way to flash...TIL :)

I got it running cm10 now. I've always used cwm, what does twrp do better?

I installed super user from SD (I loaded it before rooting). The problem with this phone is that if you dont have a micro SD, there isnt anything to mount and load to if you get stuck in a boot loop.

TWRP does a better job of wiping, and its faster, not to mention easier. :)

My S2 x was rooted, I think. Superuser was installed on my phone when it was turned on. Can I assume that it is correctly installed? The instructions seemed to indicate that if superuser was there then the phone was rooted. I next installed Proxydroid and it kept telling me to root the phone. The problem is that I don't know what to do with superuser. I don't how to grant permission to proxydroid or anything other apps. Help!

Hi budder :hello: Welcome to AF!

You don't have to do anything with Superuser. It just does its thing. When an app needs root permission, Superuser will ask you if its ok and you just say yes.

Which Superuser did you use? Try flashing it again. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries. If it still doesn't work. Try Superuser-3.0.7 if you haven't. The link is in this guide.

I sold the last one, bought another. Im stuck in the same position I was in last time, but I don't remember how I solved it. I should have written down what I did last time :P.

I flashed cwm, got super user on there. Everything was fine. But then I get to the step where I flash CM10, and all I get is boot loop. I'm going to check my download history and play around to try and figure out what I did last time. If anyone has any suggestions in the mean time, I would appreciate it.

Does anyone know how to mount anything from cwm 5.0? Everything I try gives and error because there isnt an internal SD card...I'm looking for an external SD card just in case.

However, I know I fixed it last time without an SD card. What was the fix!?!?! argh.

Look in the All Things Root Guide for the links to Darkside Superwipe and Darkside Cache Wipe. Flash Cache Wipe in recovery and see if that helps, or flash superwipe first, install the rom and then flash cache wipe.

I can't flash anything because I can't mount anything! that's the main problem so far.

Im confused. How did you flash CM10?

Try 'mount emmc'.

I mounted it when the phone was booted regularly into the stock rom. Now I cant boot and I can't mount anything inside of recovery. Not sure if thats a t9898 thing, or because I flashed the old CWM from this guide.

Can't try to mount emmc because I cant get into recovery anymore, since I tried to flash the newer cwm from the link in the last post (viaodin)

Which phone do you have? AT&T or T-Mobile? The recovery you flashed was from AT&T's forum.

Do you have ADB set up on your computer with fastboot?

Im sorry, odin recognition is fine, my usb connection was weak :P! sorry about that

I flashed the old cwm from this guide, I have access to the recovery now

I have the t989d (tmobile version but for telus).

Edit: Ive used adb and fastboot in the past, but Im no expert

I recommend using Odin to flash this TWRP recovery. Its a lot better than CWM IMO. The only thing is if you have CWM backups it wont restore them. You can use TWRP to select internal storage.

It also might be a good idea to use Odin to flash back to stock.

No I cant mount anything ATM. I don't have a back up bc you cant back up this phone with this version of cwm (related to the SD card problem I think). However I think I found a ODIN backup file. takes about 10 minutes. If that dosen't work Ill try that twrp file. thanks

Done atmazzz solved the problem again!

Alright so now im 100% convinced the problem has to do with flashing an old CWM (made for ginger bread) and then flashing a jelly bean rom. solution is to start off with a newer jelly bean version of the cwm recovery tar, or the twrp (which Im using now because it solved my problem).

Thanks again! AF rules!
