Telus Galaxy S2 (T989D) Ultimate Root and Optimization Guide with Steps

Successfully Rooted Koodo S2x sgh-t989 with the guide Fantystic recommend and i use CWM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2.zip from another site which is the latest superuser I am running kernel 3.0.8. Thanks everyone for contributing and the creator of the guide appreciate it !

Welcome to the forums JibsJonesJr :ciao:

Enjoy you're rooted phone! :D

If you haven't done it already, be sure to do a nandroid backup in recovery. It can save you misery in the future.

Welcome to the forums
Thanks a lot for your guide. However, I would like you to answer a few questions for me.
I downgraded my Koodo S2X to a stock Telus gingerbread 2.3.5 following one of you're guides (can't find it now, that's why I'm posting here) in order to get the GPS working. I used ODIN to flash the tar.md5 file.
Now, suppose in the future I want to upgrade to a Koodo 4.0.4, how would I do that? Kies only shows me an update to Telus 4.0.3.
Also, I downloaded a zip file for the Koodo 4.0.4 stock rom. This is not a tar.md5! That's why the confusion! So if I had to, how could I use this file to update to 4.0.4? Do I use ODIN? I haven't rooted my phone. Can I perform the update without rooting?

Welcome to AF Regressions. :ciao:

Kies is only showing the update for a Telus rom because you installed a Telus ROM and Kies thinks you have a Telus phone. Open the koodo zip file you downloaded. If it has an md5 or tar file in it, you would extract it and use Odin. If it doesn't, you would flash it in recovery. To flash it in recovery, you will have to follow the instructions for rooting and installing CWM recovery.

Thanks for the quick reply. This stock koodo firmware is a zip file containing meta-inf, boot.img and a system folder. So to install it, do I just include the zip file in the internal storage and click on install zip file in CWM recovery?
I have installed CWM recovery but have not rooted yet. Do I have to root even though I'm installing a stock firmware?
Sorry for bothering you so much.

It's no bother. :) Yes, you would install the zip in recovery. You need to install the superuser zip in recovery to root. Put the zip files on your SD card if you have one. Install superuser. After you check to be sure you have root, then go to recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and dalvik cache. The steps are in the root guide. Then you install the koodo zip in recovery. Look in op of this thread or in the root and rom sticky at the to of the page for more info.

Ok, I did all the above, but when I flashed the koodo stock 4.0.4 rom, it got stuck in a boot loop. It would go up to the galaxy s logo and reboot constantly with a beep. What do you think went wrong? Im really scared:o

OK, can you get to recovery?

I didn't try going to recovery. I went into download and installed stock gingerbread through odin. If i had gone to recovery could I have been able to stop the boot loop? What should I have done to keep the stock 4.0.4?

Ok, after using Odin you will probably be unrooted again. After you rooted, did you confirm that it was actually rooted?

What I was going to suggest is reading the bottom of this post and downloading DarkSide Super Wipe and Darkside Cache Wipe. Flashing Cache Wipe will usually get you out of the bootloop. If you decide to try again, after installing the new recovery and rooting, Flash Superwipe, flash koodo 4.0.4, then flash Cache Wipe.

Thanks you a lot for such guide. Still trying to convince myself to root my phone.

Actually I have one question - do I have to root phone in case to change radio? Or I can do it without rooting?

Thank you and I'm sorry for such (probbably dumb) question. I'm a total noob in such things.

Welcome to the forums crocodile. :hello:

No need to apologize. We all started as nobs somewhere. :) You would need to root to flash a different radio. Which phone do you have? Why a different radio?

Thank you for quick answer, Atmazz. I got Kodoo version of T989D and trying to use it with Wind mobile. This is Canadian provider, works on AWS frequency. So I unlocked the phone, inserted sim card and it seems to be working more or less Ok with voice (at least in most areas it shows 3 bars). Unfortunately at my home location it only shows 1-2 bars and sometimes it is a real problem to make a call...
My major problem is internet. It keep flickering between H and 3G icons in notification area (when I'm staying in one place) and speedtest jumps anywhere from 2m to 50k within single test. So I'm thinking to try some other radios hoping that it will improve reception...

hi,

just used your guide to root my Koodo SII X SGH-T989D

I followed it step by step by step and it worked perfectly!

Also, after rooting, my phone was unlocked!!! I didn't do anything else, just put in a fido sim card, rebooted and voila! i'm now using my phone on the fido network.

Just thought you guys would like to know, on the Koodo version, this root unlocks the phone (at least on mine)

What`a wrong with me. I followed the instruction and just can not get into downloads mode. With volume- and power... And tried +- and power. Sgh-t989d. Ics 403.Telus.
Please help.

I had issues trying to get into the different modes as well. Just turn the phone off, then hold the power button and volume down at the same time. Wait until the phone vibrates once, then let go of the power button with your thumb (while still holding the volume down button). Once you see the download screen, you can let go of the volume button. It's the same deal with entering clockwork recovery, but you hold both volume keys and power until the phone vibrates once, then let go of the power button, while still holding the volume keys until the recovery screen loads.

Hey Atmazzz, thanks so much for all your knowledge on throughout this thread. Idk how many hours of research I'v spent rooting my phone flashing roms and what not but I keep getting this busybox error when I'm trying to unlock it.... Any ideas?

Hey all, Need some help, and couldent find much with the search. I have a telus s2x running 4.0.3. I followed the instructions using Super user 3.0.7, and during the install, I had to install super user 3 or 4 times before it would install corectly. After i finished everything, I booted my phone. This is where it all goes weird. Apparently my SD card got corrupted, so I had to re format it, So i cannot restore from CWM anymore. Super user is installed, but I never get any popups from it from apps that need root acsess, and running titanium pro and root checker both tell me I have no root access.

What are my options now?

Hi SixthFall :ciao: Welcome to AF.

Try flashing the superuser you have one more time and see if your rooted apps work. If not, try this superuser.

Alright. I already restored to stock rom, and am following your other thread. The 3.0.7 won't even install at all, always aborts, so I will try this one now. It needs to be on the phone storage, not the external SD card, and it needs to stay as a zipped folder correct?

It can be on your SD card and yes it stays zipped.

Hi and thanks to all for superb information. I followed the instructions on page 1 several months ago and I would now like to upgrade from 2.3.5 to ICS. I don't know how to proceed and as much as possible would like to keep my apps and their configuration (all backed up in Titanium pro). Can anyone tell me if a guide for this exists or tell me what to do? I am really new to this.
Thanks in advance,
Fred

Welcome to the forums frednaud :wavey:

You can probably update through Kies. If you can't, you can do it with Odin. Read this guide.
