Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] A firmware update was just released.. 2.99 mb big, wtf???

if you wish to stay stock you will need to have the stock firmware, then flash this update and then get the jellybean update when it comes out. you cant skip around.

That brings me to the next question I have my stock non root backup if let's say I want to update I go back to that non root backup update and that's it

if it breaks root that means I have to re flash the root tool kit to get into twrp and flash again?

So I got this update messages and every time I try to update it, it doesn't work I go into CWM so how do I update it and should I update it or is it not really that important? Thanks for your help.

Some of you guys said you got the ota update. You guys said you woke up and seen it then did it and it worked. But some of us did it and it failed. For you guys who had it work ota I think it may have been bcuz u had your phones fully charged over night because when I did it through kies it wouldnt work unless I had full battery. I think maybe that was the issue as of why it wouldnt work ota because the battery wasnt fully charged. Just a thought but seriously kies worked just fine for me and I reccomend doing that way if you have problems doing it ota. I just wanted everything stock and to have this update so I can get jellybean and see if high graphics games will work better. Tried all roms and games just didnt work as smoothly as they did on stock although nova 3 worked great but other games were choppy like dead trigger. But I love all my stock TW features :-)

i have a question :D

would you be willing to get me a stock sys/pull of this new update?? :D

o and btw.. this sounds dumb but i know ota's preffer a wi-fi connection.. so that usually helps also

I just got the notification to update but am I supposed to unroot first before doing so? Is there an easier option like temp unroot? How do I go about this?

Yeah you will lose the root.... sometimes updated doesn't want to install over the air, so use Kies in case it fails... after just root again and install recovery.

There's a Thread about this also ;)

I've come to the conclusion that if you're phone's rooted, you tried the update at the prompt and it failed..that its better off that way and not to even try to get it.Unless your gs3 has that rare drop dead spontaneously disease.

I lost root when I installed the new update. I just re-rooted with Gs3 debugfs-root_r2. Followed prompts and im rooted again. Checked with superuser and rootchecker.

After a failed OTA I Just got mine to work via Kies. Heres what I did.

1) Used the SuperSU app to do the full unroot option.

2) Rebooted then made sure it was unrooted using root checker.

3) Connected with Kies to PC and saw Firmware update available.

4) Started update, Waited for it to run its process and it worked.

5) After it was done I showed normal status in settings. I then rerooted with debugfs, reinstalled SuperSu, then uninstalled superuser. I prefer SuperSU.

6) Then went into goomanager app to reinstall current TWRP. Im now good to go with update, root, and TWRP!!

To Shabby, if you still need them what files do you need? And how can I get them to you so you can make the zip you mentioned.

This actually worked took a while but it worked thanks bud :-)

Hey let me ask you this..
the GS3_debugfs_root_r2 folder I have, one my macbook pro
how did you get it to work?
I did use that before to root the phone (s3) but I forgot how I got it to work
terminal?
give me some dirt on it please
thanks

Do you lose your apps when you upgrade to JB? Do you lose your home screen arrangements? I'm trying to decide how long this will take me.

Quick question, I've read all the pages and I'm still a little unclear. If I update I will still be able to use the automatic root method without any issues correct?

My phone automatically downloaded an update or sort, and then tried to install and reboot. After rebooting the phone, a notification said that the firmware update had failed, (because my phone is rooted?) I have no idea what the update about was other than it came from Samsung.

Does anyone know what the update is?

What should I do now?

Can't connect via Kies due to USB connection problem that's widespread on Samsung Galaxy S3. If the new firmware fixes the USB problem, then I want it.

Same thing happened to me. Check your About Device tab in settings and look at the kernel. If it says 2013 then you got the kernel update. I personally just flashed another ROM. After the update I kept losing CWM whenever I rebooted my phone. My update was applied twice too during one reboot.

The failure to update firmware did screw up my phone in at least one way:

When I go into Settings->Battery, the first item (Android system) is missing.

Ok the ota downloaded onto my phone last night and its gonna keep bothering me about it. Im not rooted yet but can I root after the update?
