Root Virtual Memory

Hey android finatics! I am trying to get ssm going and although I haven't reinstalled most of my apps yet I do feel like my Prevail is not lagging like in data however I do not like that I don't have access to files I could get to before but I have noticed alot more app fc. Is this normal when running ssm?

Which files are you referring to? And no, SSM shouldn't cause fc's. What is fc'ing?

Multiple apps. Rom toolbox which had some issues prior but more frequent now, of course they just released major update today and there are issues. com.android.vending of course and yes I did clear cache, no help. And others. Was trying to send you,lv, a screenshot o
swap in TE and get a not found response

You have swap running. It shows with the
Code:
free
command.
he problem with the first command is you don't type the whole word processes. Try
Code:
cat /proc/swaps

You also have SSM set up properly, as it shows a listing for /data/app and /data/dalvik. I'm not sure what could be causing your fc issues.

Wow your sure right. I need to stay off the net at night and try sleeping for a change. Maybe then I will think a little clearer. Thx lv for your asst most helpfull as usual. I will work on other issues later havent slept in a couple days.

I am just plagued with issues involving this phone lately.
Does anyone know of issues involving app updates when running SSM? Updated Rom Toolbox Pro and it totally screwed up my phone and major issues period with updated app. Transparent text multiple places in app, can not change certain parameters or functions. Screen at one point covered in like a multi colored pixilated spider web design. Constant force closes and eventually boot looped. Had to flash recovery and uninstall Toolbox Pro. Deal is nobody else is posting these issues in review? FYI Google has banned ad blocker from playstore: mad:

I just got a new 32gb class 10 card and would like to have KK in data mode along with a swap partition. With my old sd card, I am already using data mode, but I want to add the swap partition since I now have a speedy card.

My question is, on my new sd card, when exactly do I make the partition? I plan on reflashing the rom. But after I flash and the phone boots up, is that when I go into ctmod settings, and create the partitions(1fat, 1ext4, 1swap)?I dont need the full blown instructions, just the order of things. Ive been rooting/installing custom roms for a few friends, and their friends and so on, so I got a lil stupid when it comes to my own phone:rolleyes: I just need a quick refresher of what to do when. Thanks guys:D

Yea, u can do it that way. That will let you set the partitions with kouma's app.

You can also do it with cwm, but this limits the third (swap) partition to 256mb.

OR you can do it with adb, from recovery. Just adb shell into the phone and do
Code:
sdparted -i

Thanks LV. One last thing(s), if I wanted to do SSM with swap, id partition it 1fat, 2 ext4's and 1swap , making 4total partitions, correct? Also, what would you recommend for a swap size? I was thinking making ext4 at 4gb (2 4gb if using SSM) and a swap size of 1gb.

The best size is whatever you think you will use. Personally I use a 1gb sdext. I have barely filled half of it. I don't think I could use the whole gig if I tried.

Not saying YOU want be able to, just that I personally haven't.

Are you planning on using SSM? If so, I THINK I remember kouma saying that the second partition should be the same size and any bigger would be a waste of space. (As the dalvik will not take up more space than the app)

Just posted regarding this earlier :D

And ESPECIALLY if you use SSM, more than one gig is over kill. Considering that /data/data stays on the phone you will run out of space well before you ever get anywhere near 4gb. 4gb is SUPER overkill.

As far as the swap size goes, that's what I have. 1gb swap :)

(And yes, you have the right idea as far as the number of partitions goes)

That is what I got and was running ssm forever, tried the data mode and even with the fast card it was slower then the old card running ssm. So I switched back to ssm. Mine is 2gig ext4 and 550 ext4 and 550 swap. It all runs great and always have plenty of room on all!

I agree that at 4gig you will never use that amount. Mine is set at 1 gig with about 80 apps installed and have only uses half that.

As far as swap I have done some research on linux swap systems and found that the reason cwm stops at 256 MB is because thats what is recommended for efficiency . I have my swap partitioned at 512mb cause that, according to research, is the max you really want to set. Anything more and it will actually make it slower cause it takes longer to find whatever file or process to swap. Realistically with the limitations of the prevail even 512 MB is overkill.

Thanks guys. Im bout to take care of all this in about an hour. After what was all suggested here I think Ill do SSM with 2 2gb partitions and a 512mb swap. I hear what you guys are saying about overkill, but Ive been using data mode with a 1gb partition and Im up to about 800mb used, so I think going to 2gb is the safe route.

On kind of a side note, like I said earlier, Ive been rooting a lot of phones for friends (mostly GS3's) and while doing that I thought how come no one ever made an All In One tool for the Prevail? Using the AiO to do anything and everything to a GS3, no matter what carrier it was from, was super easy. Im not saying all the devs here haven't done enough, I was just wondering if anyone tried or thought of making one.

I dont know what I did wrong. I did a fresh rom install with data wipe, booted ctmod up, made my 2 ext4 partitions and a swap with sdparter in ct settings, selected ssm, rebooted, no good. Went to recovery, mounted sd-ext, fix permissions, reboot, no good. So I try data mode and that works except after about an hour, the phone freezes and I usually have to do a battery pull. I then data wiped, reflashed rom, partitioned sd inside CWM to 1 ext4 and 1 swap, reboot, set to data, reboot, data mode works. But once again, its freezing after about an hour.

Now as far as swap goes, I was able to get that up and running using Swapper2. Is that the way it is supposed to be done or can I just use the swap setting inside ctsettings? If so where should I browse to for the swap? I couldnt find it. But I seen others say they use Swapper2 and it does work.

Im probally going to try a reformat of sd card and ODIN phone to do a complete fresh install. I just dont get where I went wrong. I have set data mode up numerous times in the past without any real issues. Ive also done ssm bout a year ago and I did that without any trouble then. And that was before the nice sd parter tool.

I have reflashed CTmod several times and always set my partitions and data or ssm through sdparter and never had issues in this respect. It sounds like you are doing it correctly.

I got it. I just forgot about formatting the sdext in CWM. I got my Prevail back up and kicking ass.

Sweet glad you got it fingered out!:)

Actually, I thought I had it fixed, but now its rebooting randomly, freezes, and getting force close issues once in a while. Sometimes on reboot, everything force closes, its like 20 FC messages within 30secs.

I dont get what the problem is. I have tried fixing permissions and format sdext in CWM. Ive even tried giving up on SSM w/swap and went to data mode w/swap and Im still getting issues. I dont think the new sd card is the problem, its a Sandisk 32gb clas 10 (the ones that are half red/ half grey. Maybe swap is the problem? Im just about at my wits end here. Ive actually considered buying a new phone (not a Prevail). I really like my little phone that could.

Is there a max that the extra ext4 partition for SSM should be in size? What about swap size? Also when using ssm with swap, swap partition is mmcbloc04 (i know that isnt exactly correct, but its the xxxxxxx04 one), correct? Thanks guys

Yeah I'm using a scandisk also but a 16g class 10. Great cards and hold up well. As far as the extra partitions/Ssm and swap. Mine is 1.5 g sdext/ 512mb ext4/ 512mb swap rest vfat. Unlike data mode where the system no longer uses the internal storage for any part of newly installed apps, you are only limited by the space of the sdcard. Running SSM on the other hand does still use internal storage, Dalvik-cache (if I remember correctly) so you are limited on the amount of apps you can install internally by whatever is left after the rom install. I think I only had maybe 65mb or so after flashing CTmod. The point is making a large ext4 partition, anything over 512mb) your never going to use running ssm and if you switch back to data mode you allready have it partitioned to the max you want to use for swap.

Swap I believe I had explained a couple of posts back on size and the reason being and yes you have the correct mmctblck. The Prevail, as far as i can tell, will never swap out more than a couple hundred k at the very most, and honestly through exp i dont believe it will even do that. Thats why in reality the 256mb that cwm allows for the swap partition is more than enough. I had did alot of research before even flashing my first rom. I am on MokeeMod now.

I have always been plagued with the fc's issue sometimes worse than others, no matter what rom I'm on. The Prevail is a cheap pos but great for learning how to flash roms, hacking etc.. or as a backup .
I am currently having issues with not being able to charge the battery while installed in phone so it looks like I will be purchasing another device also. Not spending $100 on another prevail, will put towards the sv1 or even can get an sg2 for $100.

Hope this helps and sorry your having the issues you are. It does sound like probably the device itself is just worn out, never had issues with flashing roms or it not taking to data or Ssm modes. Always been a very easy process but I am by no means an expert Just started doing this a couple of months ago myself so please talk with one of the other more experience guys like lv, cwhatever,wetbiker7. I'm just trying to PIF like these guys did for me.

Like you, Ive also flashed roms a bunch of times. Not just for the Prevail, but other phones as well. Ive never had any major issues before. Im going to try again, but Im not too confident. If getting SSM w/swap and Data w/swap doesnt work, Im going to try SSM and Data without swap.

Where can you get an S2 for $100? When the S2 came to Boost, I really wanted it. Then I found out that for 4G it uses WiMax, not LTE. Both services are currently not available from Sprint in Milwaukee, but supposedly Sprint is finally making a big push with LTE and it should be up and running here by June. BUT, if I could get a S2 for a Benny, Ill forget all about 4G service and be just happy with 3G.

It;s been a while and I don't remember, and can't find my own notes about it. But I forget, but the extra ram memory setup that uses the command:

su
mkswap /dev/block/stl13

QUESTION:
Is that for Data Mode only? Or can that be use also with SSM mode too?

I have SSM mode, 4 partitions, [fat | ext4 | ext4 | swap] the last 3 all 1GB partitions. I just redid my phone and installed the latest CTmod, but forget if I used the above stuff in question last time I did my phone.

thanks.
