Root Virtual Memory

i was trying to help him via messenger but he got frustrated and went off line...

@ x432hz if you read this...
FROM A FRESH install... using data mode (so that the stl13 is free to be converted to swap)
in terminal. type
Code:
mkswap /dev/block/stl13
then simply direct the koumamod app to dev/block/stl13

ALTERNATIVELY

using ssm, you can just place a (small) swap file in stl13 using the koumamod app... and then direct the app to the file you made. but this isnt very sensible (IMHO) because the file would have to be small enough to allow all of your user data (app data, texts, user settings, etc) to coexist there too. if you are using ssm i recommend using an additional partition converted to swap.

im still willing to help, if you have the patience... hmu bro

My suggestion is 32 to 59 MB. Mine is 256 MB, but never gets over 48mb unless I have many apps running at the same time. :)

hey cwhatever

What size should i make the swap partition? Im working with a 2gb micro-sd card.

Thanx.
for now like infirno said will be ok. but really need to get a 8gb card at least. a 16 is really great, that is what i have and have tons of data and pics vids ect.... most important , have room for cwm backups. really is important!!!! you really need room for that. whenever do something good or make phone better need to backup incase screw things up after and then say(man i wish i had a way to get back to where everything was good). you can then transfer backups to pc to make room on sd card. after you have some data and stuff on a 2 gb might not even have room for one backup. you always need to keep at least the newest good working backup to be able to restore at anywhere or anytime. hope you get what i'm saying!:D

I made 3 partitions.an ext 4,a swap, and the remainder FAT32.how can i tell where to direct koumamod for swap,if i want it to be the whole partition??

So the best thing to do would be make 2 ext4 partitions, then a swap?or just dont convert them to ext 4?i flash the sd2ext4 zip everytime i repartition my card.

If you want ssm and a swap partition you need a total of 4
[fat | ext4 | ext4 | swap]
[storage|/data/app|/data/dalvik|swap]
Easiest way to do this is with kouma's partition tool. Once you reduce the size of the fat partition you can add the fourth one.

If you use ssm but only have [fat|ext4|swap] data/dalvik will stay on the internal and your space will still be used up fairly quickly.

explained great, mine not so. i see.

Lordvincent Dude, ........ I was not frustrated at all my man. No idea why your saying that.

You told me you had time so I got on. Then it took you roughly 10 minutes to answer any IM I sent to you. That left me in a state of not knowing what was happening on your end.

Then, to be fair about it, you really didn't tell me anything. You told me in a quick sentence what I should try, but with no details on how to do it.

Then you dissapeared, ....lol. - and I ran out of time. I told you that. I had to split. That had nothing to do with you man.

You genius dudes get touchy. lol

Hey, here's a smile and a peace sign for all ya'

I did what you said anyway after I briefly talked to you. I went with the Data Mode. I was trying to do the SSM and use the internal as memory like has been discussed, can't get it right.

I made a 2GB ext4 partition on my 16GB sdcard and left the rest to fat, checked data mode and disabled internal. Went into terminal emulator and did su - mkswap /dev/block/stl13 - went into koumamod (the existing one 1.6) and just browsed to /dev/block/stl13, then rebooted. Didnt specify any size or make any swap file myself, wasnt sure about that, and chose priority 100/swapiness 60. Not sure of that either.

Now I have all of this:

# cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/block/stl13 partition 166396 132 100

# free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 290264 213116 77148 0 3584
Swap: 166396 132 166264
Total: 456660 213248 243412

I dont have any problems.

Does the Koumamod 1.7 have internal disabled by default? (its not visible)
IS THIS all ABOVE RIGHT/OK ?
What do I need to fix/redo ?

:pcguru:

You got it working! the reason you didn't have to choose what size to make the swap file is because the terminal command changed the whole partition into swap, all 160mb.
And about my comment: must have been internet connection issues... just seemed like you bailed... Kept saying you were offline. No hard feelings. :D:p

Ive made two ext4 partitions,a SWAP partition and the rest Fat32.
Now what?
now you direct the koumamod app to dev/block/mmcblk0p4 and reboot

then in terminal do
Code:
free[code] if you get numbers in the swap category, you're good

and if you want to confirm that the swap partition is the one being used for swap, then do
[code]
cat /proc/swaps

it will list mmcblk0p4

Following this thread with interest......

Now after creating the partitions with the SDparter ( from Kouma ) , don't you have to format them first in CWM Recovery for use, before specifying any path in Koumasettings ? ( Not sure if the SDparter ONLY creates partitions and/or formats them as well ) !

you specify the format you want to use when you create it. it creates them in the format you specified. no need to reformat them after (unless you made them the wrong format and want to correct it without repartitioning your card again)

O.K., I didn't know the tool already formats. But Kouma's advice to re-format the first ext4 partition after switching from DATA to SSM mode and visavers still applies, right ?

Cool. I guess I'm stickin' with the Data Mode for now. I don't see much of a difference anyway between the 2. Thanks man for your help.

As for the newer KoumaMod 1.7 - It does not have a checkable "Disable Internal Data"
-Is it enabled/disabled by default when you choose Data Mode, if so which one.?

internal is disabled when you choose Data mode.
there are too many problems caused by a race condition during the mounting of the 2 partitions
