Christmas is coming

i want to create a movement to.. move xmas to the spring time.. early May. there is not enough holidays then!!

It's cool to hear about how people from other parts of the world celebrate Christmas lol. :)

So the 'buy whatever you can and squash whoever is in you way' mentality is there as well?

I don't know how bad it is in other countries but here people get killed. It's stupid.

You're referring to your 'Black Friday' shopping sale? If so we don't have that here. We do however have a sale on Boxing Day where people push and shove trying to get a bargain, but (AFAIK) nobody's ever been killed in the crush.

Boxing Day is called Second Christmas Day here. A special day like the first.
More and more stores are open then though.

Black Friday, which is the day after Thanksgiving, is a shopper's nightmare here. I'd wait until Cyber Monday in order to get a better deal AND avoid the crowds.

There have been people trampled underfoot a couple of times, and some shootings over Nike sport shoes.

I simply won't go to anything but the supermarket or a fabric only store where there usually isn't a rush.

BTW - I got yelled at once for singing "Ya vien la Vieja" It ain't Amurrican.

I like Christmas, though. Tomorrow is September and that means the department stores will start decorating and putting out holiday songs :)

By the time the holiday comes along, you are totally tired of the advertising. A lot of people do get burned out and do their shopping through the year rather than the season.

How about theming for your decorations? Do you take that same boxes with deco stuff from the attic every year to decorate the tree and the rest of the house? Or do you vary? Following any hypes?

And you wonder where the Dutch get their rep for frugality ;)

Besides, don't you get pressies on December 5 or 6? Shouldn't the sales start December 7?

In the UK, the post Xmas sales start before Xmas these days and EVERYWHERE opens boxing day

Our themes are:

1. the decorations are out

or

2. they're not

:D

Why do you call it boxing day?

Yes, December 5 we celebrate Sinterklaas, when kiddies (and adults :D) receive presents. I think Santa Claus finds his origin in our Sinterklaas some how.

We just call it 26th December. :p but it's actually my dad's birthday.

Sinterklaas...nope we don't do that one either. ;)

Didn't Santa Claus start or become popular because he was an ad for Coca Cola in the 1920s or something? The reason he wears red and white?

Santa's origins come from saint Nicholas, (don't remember which country) but children would leave their shoes outside their cottages and Saint Nicholas would leave berries, nuts (walnuts and the like), toys, and other goodies.

When he passed away the parents kept doing it, and it spread. His original image was "Father Christmas"

And yes Santa first started from Sinterklaas as well which originates from Saint Nicholas.

The tradition of the North Pole part comes from the 1820s.

Certain parts of Christmas is influenced by Germanic, paganism, and Norse religion.

His long beard is influenced by Odin, as well as the flying through the sky tale.

Odin would ride his 8 footed horse Sleipnir and bring people gifts, which then turned into father Christmas and lastly Santa Claus and Christmas as we know it today.

Sinterklaas was inspired by Duth Folklore, who also traditionally rode a horse as well.

Thomas Nast is coined as the man who created Santa's image in 1863 when he illustrated Santa in Haper's weekly.

Mrs. Claus was popularized in 1956 by the song "Mrs. Claus" and the 1963 book "How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas."

Oh and the pagan aspect of Christmas somehow involves the Christmas Tree. Not sure how, but I know this was way long before the thought of father Christmas.

Here is a picture of Father Christmas in red and white.

Thing is ever since I grew up, I've always rather loathed Christmas....bah humbug!! :D Nothing but a commercialised mostly made in China free for all IMO. Any Christian meaning of it went long ago. As a boy I thought it was great. So now living in a country that doesn't actually celebrate Christmas is great for me. :) ....just get a heavily diluted background version of it all year round. Although I'm sure China Inc. does very well out of the season, with all the manufacturing and exports around this time of year.

For my family, we just do the tree and leave the rest of the house alone. Our clock which chimes a merry little tune every hour is turned to "Side B" for the christmas tunes :D

That really is an old picture, and not something that was pulled from a Dickensian or Victorian themed Christmas card?

Santa Claus in red and white, circa 1930. :)

I got the idea that his apparent popularity was really due to a very long running seasonal ad campaign, that's still running today. "Holidays are coming!...Holidays are coming!..." :D

Lol the whole Coca Cola thing I think was subliminal btw.

Get kids to want to drink coke lol.
Coca Cola has been doing subliminal messages for a while. I played my great uncles really old relaxing ocean cd and it said pretty clearly "Drink coke! Drink coke!"

I think they actually got in trouble for it once, but I don't think the government has the heart to get rid of the polar bears and Santa.:p

The Coca Cola Company might not have invented Santa, and the image(trademark?) of the jolly old man in red and white. But they're certainly making the most of it. See Santa Claus and subconsciously think..."Drink coke! Drink coke!" What would Coca Cola do if Pepsi were to start up with Santa ads, would they file suit against them for trademark and copyright infringement?

I know there's an Eiffel Tower and Arc de Coca Cola in Shenzhen. A nearly full size replica of the one in Paris, but with a coke ad at the top. I got a picture of it somewhere, see if I can find it.
