Official Speed Test and WiMax Deployment Thread

I don't get why people are posting their own speedtests on this thread, if that is the case, this thread should be renamed the 'Test your local wireless broadband speed using speedtest.net'

It's pointless for people to post their own speeds and has nothing to do with WiMax or EVO.

As Berner said, I was under the impression that eioio had some inside information and was able to post WiMax results from a network he had access to or through data gathered from other testers around the nation.

I don't mean to come off as a jerk, but essentially, any speed test data posted here, save for eioio's has absolutely nothing to do with WiMax or the EVO.

It's nice that your local broadband provider has fast speeds, but that doesn't contribute to the intended purpose of this thread at all.

Unless eioio does additional speed tests, or we have people from the forum with the 4G wireless hotspot device performing tests connected to the WiMax available in their areas, there's really no point.

I agree with you Autosuggestion and that's one of the reasons I've fought to stay on topic and friendly. I've also tried to present facts and work with the known instead of making up things based on emotion.

Here's one example of what you're saying about being watched:

Originally, the "official" EVO thread started out as a poll that asked: Are you giving up on the Supersonic? That was before CTIA and before the EVO 4G was introduced. That was only 7 weeks ago (gosh, it seems so much longer), but the whole Supersonic Forum as it was called at the time was dead and there were only a few threads.

The poll itself was a yes/no and a lot of people were voting yes, meaning they were giving up. I was a little shocked, because the specs sounded so good, but nonetheless people were giving up.

Within a few day, someone named stleber registered and dropped a picture of the new Supersonic with the title "A leftover from MWC? ;)" That was his/her first and last post and I was flabbergasted. It had to be a present dropped on us by HTC or Sprint and I was most appreciative, because never before had I seen this picture ANYWHERE on the Internet.

For those that don't know, the WMC was the World Mobile Congress held in Spain back on February 16th. We knew HTC was going to present some phones at that conference, but they didn't mention the Supersonic.

So yes, I believe we're being watched. It could have been the same deal with eieio yesterday, but that remains to be seen.

well in that case, since there hasn't been any new news since CTIA, we should all seriously consider giving up on the EVO........ ;)

Thanks for sticking up for me, dtokarz. Some people don't approve of the job I'm doing, but that's their problem. Here's what NoName said to me on his very first post: and he said this the other day when we were talking about phone insurance: It came out in the thread that Insurance companies will not add your phone to your car insurance policy or your home owners.

My comment in the tread was "With a phone there are so many things that can happen or go wrong. For that reason, I usually buy the insurance, because it's not so much about the money as it is about the convenience".

You be the judge on who the smart one is.

My problem was there wasn't any constructive criticism in his post. Me or you will not appeal to everyone, but make a comment that explains why you disagree. I'm all for difference of opinions, but do it in a manner that promotes positive discussion.

I agree dtokart. I can take any kind of criticism if it's constructive, but every post by NoName tended to be critical instead of constructive. I never said anything against him, so I don't understand why he insisted on lambasting me. Guess you can't please everyone.

No the towers are being upgraded and more towers are being installed
Hey, eieio. I'm happy to see you again and I promise, no more Old Mc Donald jokes.

Bill

Eieio, what can you tell me about Denver, CO? Was following the thread closely before it got split into this one, and trust your info.

also, obviously chicago is a 4g market, but what kind of speeds up and down can we expect in chicago? i'm really anxious to see how well 4g will work for me :)

I posted my speeds because I do use Wimax. They are actually in this thread twice because mods combined this thread with posts from the main thread. I use Sprint/Clearwire Wimax as my home ISP and I figured I would show people what they can reasonably expect at this stage of Wimax deployment.

I think the averages for 4G will be 3-4Mbps down and 1Mbps up. Obviously the closer to a tower you are, or the more of them in your area, you can see a big bump in speed. But realistically I think that's the 4G speed.

I got something like 7mbps a few times but typically I hit around 5+. Upstream usually 1-1.5mbps. Either way, I only get 800kbps on EVDO so even a little over 3mbps is gonna be 4x the speed while 6mbps will start to get closer to 6-7x the speed.

I am hoping we see somewhat better average speeds from WiMax.

There have been times I've gotten over 4MB down on my 3GS.

Yeah, in theory you can hit 7.2mbps on HSDPA where that is available. The nice thing is that these Wimax speeds are at the low end and will only improve with later revs whereas I have yet to meet anyone in person who has hit HSDPA speeds on AT&T. I wonder how many people are covered by that versus Wimax by the end of the year. Either way I am cool with getting 5-6mbps with better coverage in my city and a much lower monthly rate.

Yeah I mean, I've gotten really high speeds with AT&T and I've gotten below 1MB.

It'll be nice to avg around 3-4.

It never rains in southern California

I'm bumping this particular one because you said it never rains in Sothern California (to quote Toni Tony Tone), but are there actuaclly Sothern California cities listed? All the ones I saw posted about were Nor-Cal, including Modesto (which is closer to Nor-Cal than So-Cal).

The area I am in 3-7 up is average at any time of the day or night. It has been the average for about 6 months now..

I have gotten 15 up and 3 down on several occasions

@eieio
I'm pleased to see you again. Hope you don't mind all the Old Mc Donald jokes I made after you left the other night.

You really had the place jumping because you were offering some kind of evidence and hope concerning WiMAX. For that, I thank you.

Are you not checking any more cities for us? If you still can, could you check Denver please? I know it's been announced as getting 4G by year's end, but I'm wondering if we'll be in the 30-45 day range. :)

Firstly thanks for all your time doing this. I have a question. I live like right outside NYC in bergen county NJ. Will the wimax network for NYC extend to the immediate surrounding areas? or will NJ be included at a later date? If you need a city i would say paramus and hackensack are two big ones in my area.

Thank you again.

Thanks for all the info man! I was just wondering if when you do start checking for more markets if you could check in Arkansas for me? Thanks in advance.

How about Oregon. I know Portland and Salem but was wondering about the Eugene, Springfield area? Thanx for all the time you have put in here. It is getting everybody all buzzed up!!!!!

any word on northern new jersey/bergen county? new york, which is right next to me, is scheduled to have it really soon, will new jersey be included in that rollout? Thanks.
