I noticed a lot of people are confused about whether or not the phone will automatically switch between 4G and 3G. Some say it will but some say you have to go into settings to manually switch between the two. Well, check this out YouTube - HTC Evo 4G from Sprint hands on at about 1 min in.

Yes, you go to the settings to switch between 4G and 3G BUT if you set it to 4G it will automatically search for the fastest network. No worries! It will drop in and out of 4G just like most of us have been doing with 3G and EDGE for quite some time.

That makes me wonder though, if you drop out of 3G also, can the EVO also rely on 2G?

And I'm more than willing to bet good money, with say 10-1 odds, that release news will break here LONG before e-mails get dropped from Best Buy!

There's absolutely zero reason why the phone would not have 1xRTT capabilities. That would make no sense.

I know this is EVO page, but Nexus One is no longer going to Verizon. I wonder would this be the case for Sprint because of the EVO as well.

If the Nexus One is still coming to Sprint, I'm betting it will be the Nexus One 4G...

I haven't seen any specs that list a 1xRTT receiver anywhere. I don't see why it wouldn't though cause EVDO is a descendant of 1x.

That's exactly where I was going with my other post. Say your enjoying a movie on Netflix when it comes out later this year, or on Hulu when flash is officially done and you watch a movie in full screen on auto mode which is usually the setting people will use.

You go in the kitchen or bedroom and you're in full screen mode, your 4G connection lags or disconnects 3G picks up and by the time your done with the movie you could possibly be near let's say half a GB since a Gig would seem far off. But say this occurs many times over the course of a month and you break the 5GB 3G cap. All I'm saying is 50 bucks per Gig is nothing to cough at. I think after 4G they should just bite the bullet and remove the cap or alot of people might be calling in with a hefty surprise at the beginning of their next billing cycle.

Not to bit-pick, but Hulu does NOT show up on any mobile platform, and it isn't due to flash. I've seen that you can watch it using the SkyFire browser because its different than most mobile browsers, but even phones with Flash cannot watch Hulu.

Well no it may not be officially supported but if my phone had flash right now I could change it's platform id in Skyfire and make it look like I was using a home PC and still watch a movie. Either way just giving an example, could easily happen just watching Netflix or doing other bandwidth intensive tasks.

In all honesty, I don't doubt that and I hope you're right. But it's always good to have a backup plan. If I happen to not be able to check the site, I could still get an email to my phone from Best Buy. I figured it can't hurt to sign up so why not just do it.

Either way just giving an example, could easily happen just watching Netflix or doing other bandwidth intensive tasks.

Sounds like a lot of work to possibly go over your cap. LOL.

Personally, I won't be streaming movies much (if at all), and if I do, I'll make sure which network I'm on.

look usually they wont care if you go over the 5g cap on 3g... i do it monthly without tethering. idk if any of you remember software called wmwifirouter. it was a tethering app that did it all.

but back to the point at hand

with a tiered fall back system like that there going to have to have some sort of notoification system or there will be people going over all the time. without that they cant do anything about the overcharge because people had no way of knowing they were on 4g reliably.

o and @ frozen. depending on what your doing you could easily go over 5g cap on 3g but you also gotta think your speeds fall drastically when on 3g so it wont be nearly as fast as you think.

to put it into perspective
average anime episode 23 minutes long is at 720P res around 350m so if you watch 15 episodes at 720P on 3g you would be over the cap but a 480p would take around 25-30 episodes

I think people are saying if the Overdrive plan were carried over to the Evo, then X would occur.

The actual plan details for the Evo are still to be determined. Yes people will say 4G is unlimited and whatnot, but there has been no official announcement about it (except the Dan quote where he mentions 4G would be uncapped).

So, much of this posting is all guesswork, and piecing together information. All of this could change.

You'll need to wait for flash to get an answer, there are videos of it working somewhere but no one knows how well it will work once flash is released.

you can make hulu show up on true opera and skyfire it just takes some editing.
you have to make the browser appear as firefox and it will work.

o and its not flash thats the problem here its hulu.
they limit the ways you can watch this as not to tick off the owning networks

they dont want you watching there videos whenever you want.

The overdrive makes an audible sound (you can turn the sound off) when you switch between 3g and 4g.

You can set the device for 4g only or set it to switch between the two or make 3g or 4g preferred.

The overdrive allows you to open a page like what you have with your router and you can see the 3g or 4g data used at any give time..

I have never seen a limit on 3g data on phones. But they specifically state that phones are not to be tethered..

If you have the old Mobile Broad band Plan that was unlimited and did not change your contract the 3g unlimited data still applies.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I spend $30 per month for 5mb, if I can roll it all in to one service and pay less than I will. The only thing I can see is families or multiple people in one house sharing internet may cause problems and opt for both. Another thing to think about is if you are in to online gaming, who well will the service work...

Are you considering the fact that voice may not work while your on-line?

I have a family, 5 people under one roof with 2-6 devices all using the internet at any given time. For me the EVO hotspot would not be enough.

I still feel like some would rather have the "pure" android device without Sense UI, if they had a 4G N1 on Sprint I might even be tempted. In a recent poll on androidcentral 35% of the visitors didn't like Sense. As a company it would be smarter to give more options, especially since they could let Google handle the online sales with no inventory overhead.

Personally, I really hope the speculated EVO's June release date is correct. I've been using my 6 yr old dumbphone ever since my POS Instinct screen stopped responding almost 5 months ago. I'm going to be traveling for work a lot in the next few months and I don't know if I can wait until Aug to have a smartphone. Maybe I can get a cheapo Hero on Ebay until the EVO is released, lol.

I run 4-5 devices off of my overdrive almost 24 hours a day with out a hiccup.. The voice situation will be interesting though to see if that works

I have watched HULU on SkyFire on my old Sprint Mogul (WinMo) phone... image quality was good, but it had a extremely slow frame rate... not worth watching.

That being said I did sign-up to be notified of the Android version of SkyFire as I expect with faster connection speed and a faster application on the EVO HULU should look great through the SkyFire browser.

I remember the format wars. From what I remember HD DVD were cheaper to produce with the same quality viewing experience. I still have the HD player for my 360.

The difference was that blueray had the potential to store more information and was therefore a longer lasting technology. In the case of wimax vs LTE the question is not which is better, the question is which is more important in the mobile market. Realisitcally, WiMax can do about 5-6 down and 1 up, which is more than a mobile phone will ever need. Wimax also has a lot more spectrum which equals more bandwidth. LTE (theoretically) can go faster but it doesnt have the bandwidth and therefore is more likely to be bogged down as more users switch over.

I honestly think AT&T and verizon may have made a fatal mistake with LTE. More people are using Smartphones than ever before which equates to more data usage. When there is more usage then the pipes get bogged down. Wimax can handle this, LTE (most likely) cannot. These guys are going to end up dealing with the same issues that 3g is dealing with now, too many users slowing down the connection.
