Until we get a root section, lets post updates here

#1 Rooted Desire tomorrow??!! Looks likely :D via Paul@Modaco

What does root mean?

- Better memory management = more streamlined phone (if possible with this beast)
- WiFi hotspot
- access to lots of root only apps like desktop screenshots
- full native 2.1 rom if you want it

oh yeah, and apps2sd ;)

Feel free to add to this.

EDIT: Tomorrow has come!

If this happens along with App2SD, its more or less made my mind up for me to upgrade to this handset in 57 days time !

Please forgive my ignorance, but can I just confirm: to 'root' a phone, does that mean to simply 'debrand' it (i.e. take off the T-Mobile logo when the phone boots up, etc), or will it physically wipe everything on the phone (i.e. the equivalent of 'flattening' a PC).

To root the phone means that you can write to the root directory I believe. this gives you full control of the phone.

To wipe it & debrand it would require flashing it with a non branded ROM.

Thats what I'm led to believe but I'm new too lol.

Just need to work out how to create a goldcard properly, then its all about whether I should just debrand for now or wait for MCR for Desire!

The goldcard bit its the difficult bit for me!

Thanks for that BeeP. As a Linux user, I had a feeling it was something to do with access rights.

Surely you should have root access to your own phone anyway though if you want it - it is yours after all! Or are they doing an "Ubuntu" on us?

It seems appropriate that my first post should be a daft question....it's just a taste of things to come for you all. So here goes.....

What be Wifi hotspot?

Turns your handset into a wireless access point... seamless tethering (internet connection sharing) for your notebook iPad etc, without the USB connection.

Can someone ex-plain to us newbie Android users what this actually means as you all seem very excited and I have absolutely no idea why! :)

It means you can install apps that require root access like screenshot app, you can install custom ROMs that have added features, you can use Apps2SD so you can use your memory card to store installed apps which will mean you can install more apps then the 130mb or so free space on the desire. Other things too :)

Can I just ask this question that other people maybe thinking, but what happens if things were to go horribly wrong when you start to root the phone not that it will lets all be positive but can you get it back to it's original state if so what procedure would you advise before undertaking this operation
