Root 4.4.3 rooted OTA/upgrade questions

I have it on good authority that our next version of Android will be a major update and it should be here before I/O.

So what happens to those of us using custom roms when the new android comes out? (I'm an android noob, Nexus 5 is my first android phone)

You can

1) go back to stock with locked bootloader and stock recovery to take the update OTA and test drive it

2) Download the update from XDA or Google's servers and flash and test drive it with root

3) If you are going to stay with an alternate ROM anyway, wait for the update to be incorporated in the ROM (which will tend to happen within days of release of the code).

There are variations on all 3 options. Android = choice! :D

I'm on stock ROM, just unlocked and rooted. I suppose when I get the OTA, it will undo this?

Root and unlocking doesn't stop ota's, but it will undo root if you take it. However if you change anything like the kernel, radio, or framework via Xposed, the OTA will fail.

You'll lose root. The boot loader will remain unlocked

If you have a custom recovery installed, there's a chance the OTA will fail.

If you've uninstalled system apps (those that need root to remove), the OTA will likely fail

Thats why its recommended to flash the updated ROM/bits from recovery. There will be all the pieces of the OTA posted before most people even get the notification on their phone that its available. OTAs can roll out over a week or two. We'll have downloads within a day

so if I just rooted my phone (like this morning) will the OTA make me have to root again? And if so I just do the same thing I did minus unlocking the bootloader?

The OTA will likely install the stock recovery and remove root. So you'll just need to reinstall your custom recovery and re-flash the SuperSU files from recovery.

Also depending on how google implements the OTA, it may fail due to the custom recovery. In that case you can either install the stock recovery or just flash an updated stock ROM from your custom recovery.

We won't know until someone is able to get a look at the update package

I don't think I did a custom recovery. I used the cf-auto root and didn't do anything after it finished rooting.

have you purchased the premium version of supersu? it has a OTA survival mode. you turn it on before you update :). it cost like 2.50$ .
or you can just run the batch file again as rxpert said.

curiosity: those of you with dirty unicorn, will you flash stock and sideload or wait for NYChitman to upgrade the rom?

I'll wait. The changes aren't worth putting up with the reduced feature set and I really don't think the wait will be that long. :D

Theres parts of the update that the ROM cannot upgrade (radio, for instance).

You'll either be able to flash those parts separately, or (what i'll most likely do) is flash the factory image when its posted.

Hadn't noticed there was a new radio involved. So, if I flash the factory image and then reflash DU, will that work?

Its likely because of the sprint spark update and signal drop issues

Yes that will work, you could also just flash the firmware/radio bits seperately

there is no radio in this update. he was talking about general updates that sometimes have radio etc.
edit: obviously rxpert responded. i stand corrected.

Its not a sure thing, I'd just expect to see it because of the FCC compliance fix (sprint spark) and the connection dropout fix.

Yeah they are adding in the Sprint Spark update for bands 26 and bands 41.
That's where the "fastboot flash radio" command will come into play.

Just an FYI.. because of the fact that I use AOSP blobs - that will likely not be implemented since those are Sprint-related only.

But then, i don't really need to care since i will never be using Sprint or Sprint-based MVNOs, correct?

probably. but if you ever sell/give it away, flashing then current stock image should take care of these sprint related tweaks.

Very excited for Sprint Spark myself (I live pretty close to Chicago, one of the initial test cities, and went with Sprint for unlimited and unthrottled data/talk/text).

I'm rooted using CF-Auto-Root, and have the Pro version of SuperSU with OTA survival mode enabled. I also have BootUnlocker to lock the bootloader and clear the tamper flag.

Running stock kernel, OS (ROM), and recovery.

I'll let you guys know how it goes once I get the update. Here's hoping for smooth sailing.
