Root First compcache rom?

Yeah i noticed that too. I turned compcache off again. I also find there's a longer lag when a big application opens (to be expected). I think the default compcache size might be too large maybe.

Anyway the renice values and the BFS scheduler are doing their jobs well, so still well worth using this rom :)

I wonder if its possible to squeeze an extra 10mb by modding the kernel. I think there should be about 105 to 106mb actually available.
 
I had that on the previous version (the pre1), but on this one eventually they close. Takes a while sometimes.
 
Hmm no. I just leave it alone and after about 10 mins there's only Java and that wysssynps service. I just kill those two. I have the news Buzz widgets on my homescreen which seem to suck up ram :(
 
Its wierd how 'free' and 'top' show about 3mb free, but taskbar (taskiller widget) shows 20mb free.

I'm thinking free and top are right.

EDIT: So taskiller always shows 20mb more than 'free'. But taskiller does go below 20mb sometimes too. Confused!

Rastaman, you're right, with compcache on, alot of processes stay there. I guess they get swapped instead of being closed.

I gave up on it last night. Today I saw that there was a new recovery so installed that and then updated the rom with no problems.

Seems very nice so far!
 
I have a task killer running that auto kills processes so my battery drain is still about the same as before.

Another thing is I modded the final version and removed all of the samsung apps including the wssyncmlnps app and the htc apps.

there are about 20 processes after restart that stay there, on a normal riom they go after 5 mins.

wouldnt they continue to use up battery, if they are still in processes?

i dont know much about how process work and how your rom deals with them

all i know is that killing running tasks in the past helped saved battery and i have 20 tasks that i see that i should kill as i assumed it would be needed

So, this is consistent. The system kill some process when is in lack of memory. On official rom, the lack of memory requires the terminal to kill some apps to free some memory (after a few minutes, most apps has been killed to free memory).

Compcache, with compression, virtually add some memory, the system lack of memory less frequently, and can store more application into.

It would be helpful to know what the good ratio for the memory to use as compcache VS useable memory. I certainly don't mind a smal delay (as long as I know WHY there is a delay, its much easier to cope with, and not be annoyed by it) if apps have been stored, especially when they come back as they were.

That is, having a browser loaded and reading a few pages, then switching to the market, checking email, changing the music, writing a note in notepad, and then going back to my browser. This is a very typical sequence when using the phone on the train and its really nice to NOT have to reopen those browser pages again to keep reading a blog or news item. I might have move out of good range of a cell tower briefly and thus having a stored cache is very helpful.

Understanding what are typical memory usage of the large types of apps and also their storage requirements (compressability) would help to decide what to set. I've doubled the suggested amount of 25600 and might increase it even more. I suppose you could almost get mad enough to have it take 70-80% of memory and act like an ipod (only one app 'active), but with a massive benefit of everything im doing just sitting, mashed up in the cache. :)


It'd also be nice to know what differences are between eco, mixed and perf. I've now set mine to eco, for battery life and see how 'slow' that is before I decide whether to bump it up.
 
im running mix with compcache on with standard size and a swap file to an 8gig class 6 card with 4.5 gig of tunes all on the external card.
i have no noticable delay, i get some delay if phone has been sleeping for a while but not as much as i did with stock ii5 and it soon clears

searching with quickdroid to both media cards for everything on my phone is rapid as hell.
 
I was actually considering of killing quickdroid (as I haven't been using it), esp. as it's the top cpu user. Perhaps if it wasn't on the taskbar staring at me all the time (begging to be used?), it wouldn't eat so much? (Note: went into settings and told it to sod off and just work when i ask it to.)


I also just realised that I had deleted the droidquick search (at least i think it was a quickdroid widget) from my home screen. I don't see it in the list of widgets in the menu, so how would I get it back? (Not that I'm necessarily planning on using it, re: above, but its just the principal of the thing.)

the only icon i removed from the home screen is the hdblog shortcut. i never had a quickdroid search widget.
 
Is the "update.zip" that kam mentions in his process the Galaxo one or is there another one I should use first, like a standard one or something?
 
I'm trying to use the updated .42 recovery and there's no option to backup Google Apps now. I've done a nandroid backup. Is that sufficient? Oh, yeah I'd done the II5.tar thing as per their instructions. I was all set to use your list and then they throw this new recovery image thing into the mix. Ha!

Next step is to 'wipe'. Is this "Wipe data/factory reset"?
