Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I should clarify that I am blaming the railroads for enslaving us to the clock (and creating time zones)...

Before the time zones - you had to add or subtract minutes for each degree of longitude from a central point for the time of the train's arrival. Every station had a different clock. Noon was when the sun was directly overhead at that longitude.

If a sundial is located at, say, a longitude 5° west of the reference longitude, its time will read 20 minutes slow, since the sun appears to revolve around the Earth at 15° per hour.

Unappreciative, self-absorbed customers... watched this guy chew out a desk clerk because his flight was cancelled.

"You have my money and think you can capriciously cancel my flight?!"

A. Sir, I'm not sure you understand what the word Capricious means.
B. The nice lady just told you that the plane was down for maintenance... trust, me, you don't want to fly in a broken aircraft.
C. The airline hates cancelling flights as much as you do-- they know they will lose money from assholes just like you who blame them for unscheduled breakages and acts-of-nature that they have absolutely no control over it.
D. Maybe you should try taking the Amtrack next time... I hear they are pretty good about meeting timetables.

Unfortunately, I couldn't say anything to him because I was wearing the uniform at the time... that would reflect poorly on my company (and not make me any friends with the higher-ups...).

I nearly had that once, Air China 737. They pushed back, started the engines, then stopped the engines, and next thing the cowls are open, and there's a mechanic poking about inside with a large wrench in his hard. Yeh, better to have a broken aircraft on the ground than in the air. I was in no hurry, and get a free night in a nice hotel. :D

You could have left a bolt on his assigned seat though. Right? :p

The airplane mechanics capriciously left off a few key parts to the aircraft making your flight... yep, that'll work... but, as Dngrsone knows, no plane will go back into service until repaired, and signed off on.

Customers... you gotta love 'em... LW

Yeah.. Love is one way to describe it.

The customer is always wrong in my opinion

It just so happens that we ran out of aluminum (for mikedt, and others from across the pond - aluminium) foil... and, have had to wrap leftovers in cling wrap.

How I feel about this stuff: @#*!!

Mikestony's assessment is correct: plastic wrap, whether it's made by Glad, or a lowly store brand - really grinds my gears. It sticks to itself better than it sticks to any cookware, plates, bowls... for a veggie cheese and meat tray we made, I had to 'roll wrap' it over the tray three times to get it to seal... for the dip container, it was the same thing.

I dream of a huge Tupperware set of re-sealable containers. In my experience, other than vacuum-sealing food items to freeze - Tupperware is king - products by Rubbermaid don't even come close.

Maybe I attended too many Tupperware parties as a kid. My mother LOVED Tupperware, and we had a kitchen full...

I suppose that I have to save some money, and get some Tupperware products. Foil works for most things, but if you want to keep some leftovers for a few days, without the food items picking up that world-famous refrigerator smell - Tupperware to the rescue!

I know - it isn't cheap. Yet, I'd prefer Tupperware over tin foil, or cling wrap ANYTIME. LW

I opened our free little library today, but no one has used it so far.

Yesterday, we bought some foil - just after I posted here. Mikestony lit a fire under my @$$ :)...
As much as I love the idea of having a monstrous set of Tupperware, the big, heavy duty two foot wide (75 sq. feet) roll of foil is much more cost effective.

Tonight, bratwurst stuffed with cheddar cheese, onions, horseradish mustard, and beef chili with beans that has plenty of Scoville units of heat.

Depending on my bcg, maybe some seasoned french fries. I've been eating lots of fresh veggies over the last three nights, so, I'm bending the rules a bit (hell, I've lost nine pounds... down below 200 again).

Still, the 'kitchen boy' in me likes the idea of Tupperware... I can't help it, since I do most of the cooking around here - made a low calorie Chicken Florentine early this week that warmed my lady's heart... she's on a Post Grape Nuts cereal kick, and she's looking as lovely as ever... LW

Word from the partners is that they're liking Windows 8.1

This scares the hell out of me as our computers are all scheduled for replacement either later this year or early next.

If they get you into Windows 8.1, with 10 right around the corner... they're probably saying, "Hmm... from a cost perspective, this makes sense - since the soon-arriving upgrade to 10 will be free..."

Our computer running 8.1 just went through thirty-plus upgrades this past week.

What a pain in the @$$...

All I have to say, is thank goodness for Classic Shell - we'd be lost without it - LW

Foil is great in the oven, but you can't reheat in it in a microwave. Tupperware is great for that, as is the plastic cling wrap. I usually have the plastic wrap, but have better luck with the Saran Wrap brand than any others....

I have a spatter cover that came with a tray for bacon.
I also have Littonware from the first MW we bought. Stuff is still going strong.
Pyrex bowls and covers work.
You can buy a small vegetable steamer made for microwave.
There are shower-type caps for microwave that fit any bowl.
Plastic wrap isn't good for anything else. I can use wax paper, freezer paper for crafting.
I can't even cover the pan from the breadmaker with it. I proof sourdough bread overnight in the fridge to make it more sour.
