Root [STATUS UPDATE 6/6/15, See OP] BUTTERNOOB Stock 4.4.4 v2

I'll be attempting King Root tomorrow (or more likely late tonight). Hopefully I'll get lucky and this phone has been around for awhile. I don't know how well these have sold, so maybe there's a chance. I hope they can't update them while they're sitting around on the store shelf!

Edit: OK King Root works for me, whew! I'm going to install TWRP now and hope nothing breaks! I'll post again with success or questions!

OK so I successfully (I think) installed Butternoob. I have a couple of followup questions, but here's how it went down:

1. I got so excited when I saw TWRP boot that I didn't bother to wipe any cache or anything
2. I also didn't do a nandroid backup
3. After flashing, TWRP gave me the option of flushing the dalvik cache (and possibly something else), which I did.
4. The apps I've already installed from before the flash are still there and appear to be working.
5. I can't get AdAway to write to the hosts file no matter what I do.

So the questions:
1. Can I expect bad behavior since I didn't wipe all those things I was supposed to?
2. Should I uninstall and reinstall the apps that were downloaded and still present (Firefox, etc.)?
3. King Root and Purify were still installed after the flash (because I didn't wipe something somewhere, I understand). I uninstalled both without doing anything else with them. Is that good enough?
4. Is anyone else here using AdAway, and if so, any advice?

I run AFWall+ and I've confirmed that it's working properly, and I can still answer phone calls, so I think I might be okay. If you advise that I go back to TWRP and wipe/backup/flash again, I'll do so happily.

Thanks for this ROM and I hope I didn't screw up too badly!

Welp. If so far it hasn't messed up, you're good. Though, never do that again, that was risky. Though, congratulations, your phone rooted. By any chance did you make a backup of your stock ROM? So we can see your kernel info and the rest?

I fixed the Adaway problem with a solution I found on the internet, which creates a symlink between a writable directory and system/etc (where hosts file is kept). Worked great for me! Article link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60079855

Sadly, I didn't remember to nandroid so no backup of factory ROM, though I saw on the box that the manufacture date was June 24, 2015. It was running 4.4.4 still and I hadn't yet received any update notices (though AFTER flashing, I got one for ZTE Media or something like that -- it was a notification from Google Play Services, so I simply disabled notifications from it).

So apparently the /system partition is not writable even as su. I don't know if that means anything or not. I worked around my AdAway problem and all the apps I've installed thus far are working just as expected, so fingers crossed!

P.S. to anyone who reads this, I feel that my posts are a testament to how good butternoob is. I completely botched the installation and still wound up 100 percent OK!

Well!!!!.. The lollipop DEV's may have completely left the building.....
Without sounding demanding.....
Will SUPERBUTTER ever burst from it's cocoon and drizzle us with SuperMon Sauce?.....
I loved jellybean... Kit Kat was ok..... Lollipop is decipherable in a NON stock form.. Even thou it seemed hurried and unfinished..... I don't care about "M"... It'll never see my phone..
ZTE and most other device manufacturers have adopted the throw away lighter concept....
And I don't wanna buy another shiny new object..
I'm not done with this one

I have installed Twrp for ZteZmax but when I try to install 4.4.2 it has a bunch of errors such as SU binary out of date and Chrome browser not working. I also can't use playstore. When I try to download 4.4.4 I don't know if its installing or not but 4.4.2 installed in 10-20 seconds but 4.4.4 takes almost forever. I never actually waited it out so if anyone can help me out that would be great. Thanks

Good things come to those who wait. Just hang in there and it will install.
