Do you have both the flash_image and the recovery.bin in the root of your sd card?

I think i may have worked... I reset the phone, did the holding home volume down and power buttons and when it rebooted it looks exactly like the day i bought the phone... now ive just gotta remove all this default crap

This never works; it just continuously loads, saying: "exploiting.." I tried all three versions, neither of which work.

-I have debugging on.

Make sure your device is 2.2.1. if that is the version you are running then gingerbreak should work. The app also needs to be on the phone, not the sdcard.

Just as an fyi, I used this on my two phones (both are optimus m's) that came stock with 2.2. Also, I installed the apk from my sd card (although, it was installed to the phone, even though the apk was on the sd card). It worked for me. I had originally rooted my phone with z4root, and then had to unroot my phone (the reasons why are a long story). When I decided to root again, I decided to try out the ginger break

Oops, hit submit before I was done. Any way, I tried gingerbreak out, and it worked fit both my phones (mine and my wife's phone). I left the apk on the sd card of both phones when I did it.

Huh, well if it worked then my bad. I just know that I didn't get it to work on the first attempt from the sd card so I moved onto the phone(as the OP states) and it worked right away. I had 2.2(originallyl) and then a friend upgraded my phone by mistake.(long story too lol) so I had to reroot using gingerbreak instead of Z4 like I originally used.

woot it worked took 10 seconds then restarted got stuck on the android screen so i removed the battery then it booted and was Rooted!! thx man

ps. no one use "Rom manager" it bricked my last phone

Ok guys, I downloaded the gingerbreak apk to my SD card 1.20 and 1.10 and I have tried to several times with Astro manager, Es file explorer and even the office app from metro but every time I try to install the apk it gives me the Following error:
Parse Error :There is a problem parsing the package.

I have download the apk several times as well and still the same issue. I even formated my SD card and tried without success.

I have and LG Optimus M with android 2.2.1 from MetroPCS.

Any solutions,

EDIT: I found the problem: It was my antivirus that was looking the file as a trojan virus. Disable antivirus while you download the file.

Thanks

This was totally happening to me too. I was wondering why the hell my PC didn't want to download the file

im trying to root 2.2.2 and it stays at running exploits, etc. I remember last time i rooted an optimus m it was a bitch too . im about to try z4 but im not sure if it works for 2.2.2 . any suggestions?

Please read up on the threads regarding rooting 2.2.2. It is not possible at the moment to root via one-click apps.

IVe been reading the posts but I havent seen anyone so far that has had a problem just rooting the phone, can using Gingerbreak itself cause problems without the User trying to change to a different rom Kernel etc? just clicking Root to get rid or change to something different than the Metro PCS HELLO HELLO HELLO... on startup? 2.2.1 stock

not worth a signifigant risk for something so minor on my perfectly working phone. it even uses the flash player 10.2 fix that someone posted without a custom ROM

Rooting alone shouldn't break the phone, and since you mentioned you're on 2.2.1 Gingerbreak has proven to work fine. But of course, be mindful of what system files you delete afterwards.

Just tried the GIngerbreak 1.2 one click... had usb debugging on .. it just kept running for about 5 mins..when i left it and phone went dark when i wake it doesnt look like gingerbreak is going anymore, .. one thing is when it starts .. my usb message says..its safe to remove sd card. is that why it wont work because my sd card keeps unmounting? I have 2.2.1 with av4 my box says 2.2 could it be my phone was a 2.2 out of the box and not a 2.2.1? pretty sure the girl who gave it to me didnt upgrade it at anypoint.

Looks like Third time is a charm.. the only thing i did different was set my screen timeout to 30 minutes. this time it worked in 3 mins..then rebooted..took about 10 mins on the android screen then booted up to my home screen..have superuser and checked it with root explorer and titanium .... now im off to find out what not to remove

Your going to need to go to the market an update the Superuser app and the binary. Then you need to get a Busybox installer from the market and install Busybox either to /system/xbin or to /system/bin as the exploit does not install it for you.
You need to install a custom recovery and make a backup of your system from the recovery menu (nandroid backup) so when you delete something important you can restore your system and be all good again.
The exploit does not install the proper flash_image to your /system/bin, so you need to do that with a terminal emulator or ADB shell commands. You will also need to change the permissions on the flash_image once it is installed.

The proper flash_image is necessary to flash the recovery.

sounds like i still have alot to do... when i rooted..when it was done i opened Titanium pro and it said I need busybox so i used the get busybox from the titanium menu..it said its stored busybox in titaniums cache which is on my phone not the sd card. then titanium worked correctly.. havent backed up yet.. I just updated the superuser update fixer..it said checking signatures and said ok in green. still new to terminal on phone and the image i need to flash.is that the recovery mode? so i can back up correctly? sorry very new here so i dont understand alot of terminology.. going to do some reading, read about nandbackups etc just havent tried any of it yet. thanks for your help also.

is this the proper flash img for recovery>? i got it from the top of everything root.

recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img

OK... I used the recovery img file posted at the bottom of the original post, what exactly do i need to do with this file? it says extract from image but the only thing i can extract from the file is an audio track named track 1, which i renamed to "recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM" and dropped onto my sd card. I tried that with the "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-optm-2.2.1-GNM.img" through terminal command and it comes back with not found.. So I then just dropped the actual .img file itself on the sd card..and renamed it as should be without the .img extension... used Terminal again and again it comes up with file not found.. I havent changed the Permissions on the file though.. is that my problem? i am typing everything exactly as is laid out for me....shouldnt it be finding the file and giving me an error about permissions if thats my problem though?

flash_image.bin is what you should be looking for.

Downloaded the file. Did not see a flash_image.bin anywhere.
Will try to download to phone and see.
Just a recovery.img, nothing more. The file properties indicate just 1 file, didn't see any file piggybacked either.
