Help 2.1 Problems - Issues - Quirks

After the 2.1 upgrade, I now have an app called MP3 Store, a front for Amazon. I can't get rid of it and I can't deactivate it. It keeps turning itself on and I use Task Killer to turn it off, only to have it back on within a few minutes. Thoughts? Thanks.

All:

Okay, so here are the issues I've seen reported (and/or have myself) with vibrate on the Hero since the 2.1 update so far...

- Phone dialer keys ALWAYS cause phone to vibrate, even if BOTH the haptic feedback and the dialing key tones are turned off in the settings menus.

- Phone is FORCED to ALWAYS do a short vibrate upon connecting a call...no apparent way to turn this off

Any others?

I have 4 major/main issues with the new 2.1 update.

1. My alarm will not turn off. I can push every button possible and even turn the volume off. The only way to stop my alarm in the morning is to turn the phone off.

2. Like many have mentioned, there is no way to remove facebook contacts from the phone book.

3. Google.com location will not find me/update, even with the gps on. (pic in link)
http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/81974-google-com-location.html

4. GPS/cell location settings are different with the new update. The only way to have location on is to have the gps on. You can no longer get location from cell signal.

other misc issues:
Gmail button takes you to most recent mail, not the inbox

If i have a call come through while i am doing anything else on the phone, i get a black screen, no number, name or way to answer the call

Facebook for android app is now mandatory and irremovable

MArket apps still dont auto-update or notify

Bookmark settings, Every time i use the browser i set it to view by "most viewed" and the next time i open it it has defaulted back to "newest"

My girlfriend has the droid eris, which also recently got the 2.1 update. She has none of these problems and her phone seems to run smoother overall than my hero. It make me wonder how much "testing" sprint really did before they released this. Also verizons 2.1 update was OTA why did we have to go through the hassle of downloading and installing ourselves, I can only image how many people who dont truly use their android to the extent that we do and have no idea there is an update out there.

Iver been with sprint for 10 years, but i may soon be a Verizon customer.

Tell you what...I've been with Sprint for ten years as well, but if I can't get the Hero to connect to my car's Bluetooth after this update, then I'm joining you at Verizon. The new HTC Droid Incredible looks GREAT and has gotten great reviews!

Here is the point: A lot of these UI and OS issues are pretty major. Its not just a bunch of us Android geeks looking to nit-pick at Sprint's/HTC's update just because we are never satisfied (well, maybe some of us here are like that, heh).

But yet again, these issues aren't just minor. Obviously they are pretty big because of the mass number of people who have been experiencing these issues. So how in the hell did the engineers who designed this upgrade not also experience these issues with their "rigorous" testing of this update? Can we expect a patch in the future?

My weather information has been gone since about six this morning. No current city and no information. It was here yesterday :)

I noticed the same thing. However, it seems to pick up my location based on cell tower even though I have "use network" / "use gps" turned off. For example, when I go to Google Maps, it shows the same location as before (the closest cell tower).

I do have the first option, "use wireless network", turned on, but my WiFi is currently turned off, so I don't think that is finding my location.

Hmm just right now notification light starts to blink, phones says 2 missed calls. Times of those calls....one 2 hours ago and the other 2.5 hours ago. Funny I just looked at my phone 30 seconds before that and multiple times within that 2 hours period and no notification was there. O'well.

Everytime I get a missed call the notification says I missed 2 calls. Weird stuff.

Hmm, I just found something. If you go to Settings --> Privacy, there is a "Use My Location" option. Having this checked / unchecked doesn't seem to affect Google Maps though.....

Ok is it just me or has anyone noticed we cant set ringtones for different contacts anymore...?

I was able to do that. You have to do it in People. You may have to tap on a couple of your peeps, but it will open up and give you the screen you are used to seeing to set the ringtone.

Speaking of annoyances with 2.1, can anyone help me out with this one?

I have LED notifications turned OFF for email (Menu/Settings/Sound & Display). This works fine for my Exchange account, no flashing LED, just a notification in the task bar when new mail arrives.

But, when I get gMail, I get notification in the task bar, but I ALSO get the flashing LED. Under settings in the gMail application, I have notifications turned on (w/ silent ringtone) but it only refers to the taskbar notification. This gets me the taskbar notification. No mention about, and no way to disable, the LED flash. The only "workaround" I've found is to not let gMail synchronize automatically (because I don't want the LED flashing whenever I happen to get mail).

Why would they add this "feature" to flash the LED whether you want it or not, with no way to disable it? Am I missing something? Has anyone else found a way to get just a taskbar notification without an LED flash? As I said, it works correctly with my Exchange mail, just not with my gMail account.

Help!

I noticed this as well. The only way I found to fix it was to install Gmail Notifier from the market. It has an option for disabling the LED and it actually works.

I have a pretty good problem since I installed the 2.1 update yesterday. Before the update if I was using the data services such as the browser or the market it would stop the data service and let me know there is an incoming call. Since the 2.1 update when I am using the market or other data services it sends the call directly to vmail. It also sends the call to vmail if the background data is running as well such as having it automatically check my e-mail or update my calendar. I have dug through the settings multiple times and turned on and off DDTM mode and it keeps sending the calls to vmail. I have also tried turning call guard on and off under mobile network settings.

I have been scouring the web trying to see if there is a solution to this problem but I have not run into anything. Is anyone else having this problem or is this an isolated incident? It is really getting annoying not getting my phone calls. The only solution I have found for my problem is turning internet completely off or I have been telling everyone that calls me to text me if they get vmail right away and will call them back. Thanks in advance for any advice on my problem.

I have noticed this too, any ideas?

I completely agree!! The buzz when you make a phone call is a bit annoying but the phone not ringing when a call comes in....SERIOUSLY??? This "phone" cannot seem to correctly manage the main thing it's intended to be used for....a phone!! Give me a freaking break!!
It's annoying to have every single one of my Facebook contacts in my "phone" application. There's a million little things we could nit-pick about it but the major things, esp things that worked before & no longer do....no excuses for that, Sprint/HTC! Especially considering we were the last ones to get the update & it took FOREVER!!

Ok I'm done with my rant...back to trying to figure out my ringer problem!

My weather information has been gone since about six this morning. No current city and no information. It was here yesterday :)

That happened to me yesterday as well. Only way i found out how to fix it was to hit "update" in the weather widget and then current city in the clock widget began to work again.

I've seen this too. It seems as if 3G just goes to sleep for some reason. For me, it seems to happen overnight. It's almost like there is some sort of network "sleep" mechanism, maybe after inactivity, that once activated doesn't wake itself up. Some sort of battery saving concept maybe?

I've found that switching into and then back out of Airplane Mode gets everything connected and updating again.

I've also seen this with my Exchange email pushing out to me. I have it set to send email as it arrives, which it does just fine during the day. But, ever since the new release, when I wake the phone up in the morning, nothing has been retrieved overnight. Once I sync, it all comes down. Never worked like this with the earlier leaked releases of 2.1 or with 1.5.

So, this is either a glitch, or HTC is trying to ensure that I'm getting a good nights sleep. I think the 3G sleep and the email stuff is related though.

Well I finally broke down & contacted Sprint myself, since they haven't bothered to volunteer anything. This is a copy of the email I sent them. IF I hear back from them I'll update this post with their reply. (I also sent a copy to HTC. I'm sure Sprint will blame HTC & HTC will blame Sprint, just like they did with the delay on getting the update out.)

What is going on with the Hero phones since the 2.1 update? There are many things wrong w/ the phone now that worked fine before the update. My phone rings sometimes & sometimes it doesn't. There is now a short chirp or buzz every time I make a call out. I keep losing my data connection. Every single person in my Facebook is now showing up in my "phone". These are just problems I'm having. Many people are having problems with their alarm clock not working properly. Or their weather app not working. Bluetooth doesn't seem to be right. What is going on with this & why is there no feedback from Sprint on these forums? I won't even get started about how long we've waited for this update, just to have the majority of us wish we never updated! What does Sprint/HTC plan to do about these issues, if anything?
Your customers deserve answers & they deserve a better answer than "We're working on it."
I await a reply.

Here's my 2 cents:

* I've noticed that the phone doesn't seem to vibrate when in "silent" mode. IE, turning the ringer off during a movie.

* The hard-button backlighting has been really temperamental in when it decides to illuminate.

* I don't mind the vibration when making calls, but I do miss the short beep when hanging up with a call. Can we have that back? Or maybe make it vibrate on hang-up too?

* I too have noticed the screen brightness sometimes being locked full-bore, although I haven't associated it with the camera like others have. Additional play time may uncover what's causing it.

* I'll echo the alarm clock problem. Settings have been checked and changed around. Sometimes it'll be making noise with no GUI to shut it up. How do you break an alarm clock?

* The battery life! What the hell? I don't use my phone very heavily, and I'm in the 30% range when I go to bed. It used to be in the 60's.

* I haven't noticed missing any calls during data usage, but I don't receive all that many calls. Again, my phone doesn't see particularly heavy usage.

* Voicemail doesn't download very reliably. It may be due to the 3G "sleep" problem others have mentioned. HTC weather widget (no info and not updating) problems seem to go with it. Rebooting the phone doesn't seem to help.

* The delay between receiving a call and the phone actually ringing is pretty painful. Sometimes the phone will ring for only a second or two before dumping to voicemail. Even when I catch it ringing, it'll sometimes take 3-6 seconds from when I hit the green button or swipe it for me to get past the "incoming call" screen and actually get to the call. This is really unacceptable. Doesn't 2.1 allow "prioritizing" computing threads?

* I've not noticed any BT problems yet. For those of you having problems, check to see if your device has a BT update. The new BT capabilities of this phone means it's using slightly different protocols. If your device doesn't support the new programming, you'll have problems.

* The keyboard has been functioning okay for me. (portrait and landscape)

* Cell-based (coarse) location still seems to work fine. GPS (fine) location makes it more accurate when on. I checked this with google maps, so it's probably app dependant. Some apps may have to make a special callout for coarse location activation, whereas they needn't pay special attention to it before in 1.5.

* Facebook contacts can removed (or hidden) if you like. Play with your phones a little bit, people! :)

I agree with some of the comments. This update took far too long to roll out to be having some of these issues. Little quirks here and there are one thing. A few of these issues shouldn't have made it past beta testing, much less a "final" release. Did Sprint/HTC test this before rolling it out? I mean, these are apparently common issues that are noticable within 24hours. Come on guys, step it up!

All that being said, I like the direction 2.1 on this phone is going. However, I really hope they don't drop the ball on fixing the more prominent problems. I'll be a really unhappy camper if I have to wait another 6 months for any kind of attempt at a maintenance update.

Here's another one: scrolling becomes chunky and limited after a few hours of the phone being on. That and multi touch fails completely when this happens... you can't zoom in pictures or on web pages.

All:

- Taking a photo can no longer be done "one-handed" -- reason is that t rackball scrolling to zoom camera no longer works...must first press the new +/- button and THEN must use the new on-screen scroll bar? Too many additional presses for a simple task that was one-handed before!!

i may have missed a reply to this, but you can still take pictures one handed. you can swipe the screen itself. you dont have to swipe the actual scroll bar on the left side.

also, use less exclamation marks. sounds like you are freaking out man!!

I noticed this as well. The only way I found to fix it was to install Gmail Notifier from the market. It has an option for disabling the LED and it actually works.

Thanks jhale83, that did the trick perfectly.

Maybe that's why all these bugs get into the OS, as a way to rapidly increase the number of apps in the marketplace to fix them. Makes Google's numbers close in on Apple faster. :D

Thanks again.

Anybody else getting worse battery life with 2.1 than with 1.5? I set all my settings exactly as they were when I was running 1.5, however, battery life is significantly less impressive.....
