2.1 rooted!

I was over at xda site since the last post and saw what you are saying about reverting back to .5 but sounded outta my league , especially sinse i don't get alot of the terminology , But a very sincer thanks again for your responce , if you do find a way that works to revert back to .5 pls let me know thanks again Jim Boyd = Geminiflooring@comcast.net:eek::eek::eek:

Jim, It is my understanding of your situation that you did the 2.1 official Sprint update. If you did this, you should be able to run the RUU (.5 version) the same way. It is an executable file, IIRC. Then you should be able to follow the root instructons for rooting 2.1. As ccapasso said, we haven't seen anyone confirm that this works, but I suspect it would be easy to try.

EDIT: Welcome from me as well! This is a great community, and everyone here is willing to help you. Don't give up!

Hi JB and thanks

sorry for my ignorance ,anything about floors no prblem , Rooting 4 hrs lol so again don't understand the terminology RUU=.? IIRC = .? LOL srry is there a link for that

thanks again very much

There's some discussion about what RUU stands for, but I see it as Radio Unit Upgrade. It realy doesn't matter what it stands for, but generaly, it is a name for the new 2.1 Android software. IIRC is an abreviation for If I Remember Correctly.

First question. Did you upgrade your phone from Android 1.5 to 2.1? How did you do this?

In the mean time, let me see if I can find a link to the original (.5) version of that upgrade that allows root.

Welcome to the site!

I am not familiar with the 1 click method for 2.1 yet. You might try doing it manually if you are having issues.

If you can bot into recovery, you may not see it say "nandroid backup" but instead something like backup/restore. In that menu there should be nandroid backup

Thanks for the help. I ended up doing the manual root method and that worked flawlessly. Thanks again for all the insight that you all post on here.

Okay, I'm the idiot that was never going to root and actually performed the OTA update. I'd like to know if there is a way to back that update out and still get my Sprint HTC Hero rooted? My firmware is 2.1 update1, Kernal 2.6.29-bc0d2cff, Build 2.27.651.1, Software Number 2.27.651.6

I'm screwed, aren't I?!!! :( Any suggestions? Thanks,

Technically yes, you are out of luck, for now....

I believe someone has already tried running the original 2.1 RUU (the 2.27.651.5) after running the OTA, but had no success.

I haven't done it personally, but I read that you can root your phone still by reverting to the 2.27.651.5 version by running the RUU with the original release and then follow the rooting steps that are posted somewhere on this forum.

Best of luck.

I just mentioned before that that particular process had been tried and didn't work. Again, I myself cannot confirm this as I will not be testing it out :)

I actually confirmed it earlier. I had the .6 update b/c I let it update without realizing it would prevent me from rooting, but ran the .5 RUU and it reinstalled the .5 software just fine. I was able to root my phone afterward no problem.

Post #108 -- http://androidforums.com/874335-post108.html is the post to be exact ;-)

Can someone send me the /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip file, I seem to have lost my .bak because it can't find the file when I mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip
to put it back or am I doing it wrong? I could always use my nandroid backup but then I would have to remove all the bloatware again.

Well, I plan on finding out shortly if you can or can not root once you've received the newest OTA update. I received it on Saturday & hit accept without even really thinking about not being able to root in the future. However, after reading all about the things my phone can do & isn't being allowed to, not to mention all the senseless space I'm being forced to take up, I've decided I'm going all out.

Does anybody know if it's a bad idea to wipe my SD card as well, since I am having to completely wipe my Hero now that I have to go back, OTA update, wise? I'd like to start fresh & have no idea what was on the card to begin with.

Good stuff. New info on that.

FWIW (which probably isn't much considering I've posted like 10 times on here & just now rooted for the first time, lol), I can confirm that you are able to Root after D/L the newest OTA from Sprint. I followed the directions from Post #2 in the link above to "go backwards" to .5, then followed the directions from Post #1. All in all, took me about 30/40 minutes and most of that was download time b/c the hotel I'm at has horrible internet access.

Now, onto which new ROM I want to get my hands on. But, first things first, gotta see what this wireless tethering is all about!

For a newbie short on time, can anyone recommend a place to read which Rom is having the best performance issues so far?

Good to hear.

I personally recommend Fresh 2.1.2. Other people like Damage Control. It really is all about preference.

Hey everyone , I'm new to the forums, and to be honest I really don't know what I'm doing.. I'm trying to "root" my Sprint Hero, and I clicked on the guide, and I'm currently on the step where I should see the output of "Unrevoked ... unrEVOked: root for HTC evo and hero (http://unrevoked.com)"

But the next step says that my app tray should have the Superuser Permission app on it, which I do not have. Can someone help me out?

I had the exact same problem. It's probably because you are on the latest Sprint software that was updated over the air about a month ago and unrevoked doesn't work on it. If this is the case you'll have to downgrade first then root.

Look at the red part in the first post here: [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

Hey quick question, I'm new to the whole rooting thing. I did successfully root my hero using the guide in the original post on this thread. My question is, the nandroid backup you make at the end of the rooting process, if I were to restore this nandroid, where exactly would that put me?

It would put you exactly where you were when you made the backup.
That is why you want to do them prior to each ROM flash. Then you can go back to before it quickly if you don't like it.

ps. You can turn off that Tapatalk signature if you like. It is in settings.

Good Luck!

Quick question: I am about to go back from the .6 OTA to .5 and then root. Right now, I'm using my phone's tethering for my internet access. ( Not having a job does that to you) Anyways, will I be needing internet at all during the processes or can I just download all the files I need and do it that way?

Edit: nevermind. Got it rooted.
