2.1 rooted!

Technically yes, you are out of luck, for now....

I believe someone has already tried running the original 2.1 RUU (the 2.27.651.5) after running the OTA, but had no success.

actually, i had reverted twice, successfully. it worked perfectly. my phone seemed to move smoother & a little faster. the only stumbling block i had last time was when i went to the htc site to update to the 2.1 they already INCLUDED the new OTA update with that RUU. so i was outta luck for rooting right after. hadn't had time to find a copy before the OTA until now. i just want the bloatware out. i hate clutter.

Everytime I try and revert to the RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5, I get an Error [171]: USB Connection Error, and it will not proceed. The install starts, the phone reboots, but gets stuck at the HTC screen. The app eventually times out and goes to that error. The only way I can get the phone back up is to remove the battery, then it comes up in normal mode. Any ideas?

Someone posted this problem was resolved by not taking the battery out, and just re-starting the install a second time. I can't confirm that it works but perhaps its worth a try.

Okay, I did some playing around, and it's apparently a windows 7 problem. I left the phone hung at the HTC screen, then I unplugged the USB cable and exited the app. I restarted the app in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, and then plugged the cable back in. It ran flawlessly, and I'm now on .5. Thanks again!

Glad to hear you got it working..and posting what you did to get it working may help others. Cool!

Quick question, how do you back-up all your data before running the RUU - which erases all data on the phone? I have been somewhat apprehensive about rooting because of the time commitment but the lagging issues are unbearable anymore. Thanks for the help guys (and girls)!

It depends on what all you want to backup. If you are worried about your contacts, just make sure they are google contacts and you will be fine as they will come back as soon as you sync up. As for your apps, some people use titanium backup, I never have. Other than that, if you have stuff on your SD card, you can back that up, but unless you plan on doing apps2sd (i don't personally recommend it), you won't be formatting your SD card.

There really isn't much time commitment other than setting up your screens and re-installing your apps.

The best thing about rooting, is that you can try different things out. So say you get your phone setup exactly how you want after rooted and ROM'd. You then create a nandroid backup. From there, you try something new, and if you don't like it, you restore your nandroid and poof, your phone is back to how it was.

To run .5 RUU, when I connect the phone to the computer, what setting should the connection be - charge only, HTC Sync, usb mode, etc?

And do I need to have HTC Sync installed prior to running .5 RUU?

Edit: Nevermind, figured it out. Need to have HTC Sync installed prior to running RUU.

Do the instructions here work for the 2.27.651.6 update also?

[GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

If not, what do I have to do?

The thread that you linked says "If it says 2.27.651.6 under "Build Number" (notice the bolded, underlined, italic 6), you need to run the RUU in the second post of this thread to revert to .5 first. Doing this WILL erase all of your data on your phone, so be sure to back up anything if you need to first. "

So, yes, it'll work, but you need to use the .5 RUU first :)

Are there instructions on how to get my phone from .6 to .5? I've already downloaded the .exe file for .5 onto my desktop. Do I need Htc sync to do this also? Any help is appreciated. I'm about to root.....

Yes, you need HTC Sync installed in order for the .5 RUU to work.

in the people app hit menu, import/export, export to SD card, then when you get up and running again just import them back
Or if your contacts are being synced with google, then no need for this. Once you install a new ROM and set up your google account, it will sync all your contacts back onto the phone.

Ok I give up. I am going to root. This lagggggggy phone is driving me crazy. I just got my hero two weeks ago (didnt want to spring for the EVO). I am downloading the HTC sync and the .5 RUU as I type this. Hopefully I will have it rooted in the next hour, otherwise I will be posting up frantically on how to fix all this.

I do not know the first thing about ROMs and Flashing, etc. I just want a fast phone. After I hopefully get this rooted, what do I need to do to make it faster? I've read about Froyo and other items, but I don't know what they are and dont know what I need. Read about using a faster Kernel as well, again no clue what that is.

I can follow directions meticulously! Anyone want to post up some good links for me. I have the Sprint HTC Hero with the 2.1 ...6 update already pre-installed. THANKSS!

The wireless tether app I'm using is called 'Wireless Tether for Root Users' - it's in the market. Also, you can search the market for other apps that take advantage of root access.

You can also install a custom ROM. Lots of choices here - there are threads in this forum that discuss various ROMs. I'd probably suggest going for a 2.1 ROM initially instead of a 2.2 ROM - wait for the latter to be finalized.

I loaded the Fresh 2.3.3 ROM, and I loaded the DarchKernelv4 768mhz kernel. What else can i do to increase the speed and performance of this phone?

what is overclocking? how do you do it? why would you do it? any better ROMs or Kernels to increase the speed?

new to the forum need help my sprint hero is 1.5 i want to root it and overclock but i do want to keep sprint tv and sprint nav thnx

ok, i downloaded the RUU to set me back to .5, and it is on my pc. i click and it says that the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. how do i continue on with the root process?
sorry, im quite new to the idea of rooting.

Just got finished rooting my phone. Don't know what made me decide to do it this late but it's finally done. I wasn't sure if I did it correctly so I downloaded Picme & it worked. I'm putting my screen shots up later. BTW it was really easy, took me about 40 minutes. Shouldn't have taken so long but I didn't have enough space on my SD card for the nandroid backup. When I tried to delete the music I couldn't (locked it somehow) I had to search all over the house for my spare & that's where the back up is. Thanks to all the guys & gals here & XDA :D

Now I just have to find a ROM I like.
