2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

bullshit,, it has been announced,, and everyone stop whinning,,, start whinning after the 3rd week of december if we dont get it,,,
plus if you lag and gps is that bad, take it back for repair, as my phone is only a month old and doesnt have any of these issues,, canada on rogers

Repair won't fix lag or GPS problems. They are both software issues. If you compared your phone to another model that is not known to have the lag problem you would notice a huge difference in the responsiveness of the two phones. As far as the GPS problems go, they are hit and miss. Some Captivates exhibit problems and others don't. Repair definitely does not fix any of these issues!

I had no lag, too, until I started adding apps. I've got the lag now. Only thing I've done 'special' is to root the phone, no custom roms (yet), no Voodoo lag fix or anything else like that.

I finally got tired of waiting, an flashed the Perception rom. Now I don't think I will use the official update. My Quadrant scores are 2050 and gps seems to work great. Oh and no goofy att apps. We have some great developers. Spend some time at xda you wont regret it.

If you want it that bad, root it and flash a 2.2 rom. Nobody promised you an "official" 2.2 update

Samsung has promised 2.2 for the Captivate since the beginning through official channels and continues to do so.

My Quadrant scores are 2050

Quadrant scores on laghacked ROMs are meaningless. People who think Quadrant scores matter in these situations are the same people who think more RPMs make their car go faster, even if the transmission is in neutral.

If you don't understand why laghacks make Quadrant meaningless, then you don't really understand what the hack just did to your phone and you shouldn't be installing them.

I have to hand it to all of you guys for being as patient as you are, This phone to me was like a new dev phone for testing after the jh7 update that didnt fix the GPS. I have been running the att froyo leak since the beginning of october, rooted, killed the bloat, lag fixed, sweetly working GPS : ) if it was not for my boys at XDA this phone would have been gone the first month I had it, and I got it the day it was released. I will say that for the people who stick it out it will be worth it for you. A few weeks ago I reflashed 2.1 to get ready for the official froyo, I made it like five hours and reflashed the leak. It is like a different phone with froyo ; )

I'm waiting for the official release because I'm still waiting to see if my phone was fixed when I sent it to Samsung. So far so good, but I don't want to void my warranty in case I have future problems. Also don't want to test my bad luck at bricking my phone (I know it's very rare but rare things happen to me) since I've now got nearly $400 invested into this phone.

Well in that case I'm eager to see what the official froyo release will do for me. I've had this phone for six weeks and it's been great. No lag, and the GPS works fine for me in the car. My only issue is that exchange won't sync since my company went to exchange server 2007, so I had to get the Touchdown app. Anyway, if I really will see that dramatic improvement, this will be the greatest device I ever owned. Now if they would just come out with it already!

I'm waiting to 1/1...then I'll root and flash. Question tho: I've heard that in order to root & flash, you have to make sure the 3 button recovery works. How does one check that?

pull your battery. put it back in. hold both volume buttons. press the power button till the att screen comes on. let go of the power button. keep holding the volume buttons until you enter a recovery menu

not to mention if you flash the stock 2.1 from Odin I believe that you will get the three button recovery even if you dont have it now. you wont need the the recovery to flash with odin. It is crazy:eek: easy.

I recently flashed the latest version of Cognition, and I have to say that I was nuts not to flash this ROM sooner. I originally did the OCLF, but I didn't notice much of a change in my phone's performance. I figured since I did that, I might as well take it one step further and flash a custom ROM. I made sure to undo the lag fix, used ODIN to get back to stock, rooted, and flashed Cognition and had restored my settings all within 45 minutes!

I should mention that I only used Titanium Backup for a few essential apps, but I wish I would have done it for all of them because it would have saved me a lot of time. Lesson learned. When the time comes for the official release I'm sure I'll be happier waiting for another custom ROM to be released, so doing an OTA update is not an issue for me.

My two cents (if you haven't already done so)...

If you have an external SD card, store your Titanium backup there. In Titanium's preferences change the backup folder name to external_sd/TitaniumBackup. This path is for use with Froyo, not Eclair.

Reason? If your phone becomes damaged you now have a "portable" backup from which to perform your restore to a new device.

I read a news snip today that Sony Ericsson outright blamed AT&T for the delay in getting 2.1 to the X10. They said it was AT&T's "rigorous testing" that was holding things up.

Rigorous testing?! LOL! The same rigorous testing that left the Captivate OS with lag and broken GPS- that rigorous testing? ha

None of Samsungs U.S. carrier partners have released 2.2. That clearly reveals that it is NOT at&t's fault. It is Samsungs. Still that is rather humorous that at&t would call their testing rigorous, especially since I bet all they do is add bloatware.

So, we can get from this is that when Samsung finally does pass it off to AT&T we will still have a long wait ahead of us.

No so much "told them too", but AT&T has to have some sort of (financial) reason to keep Android down while they continue to push iPhone sales.

My bet is after they loose iPhone exclusivity, they'll treat the Androids a little better. Hell look at what they're working on with Moto while, coincidentally, VZW is ramping up it's iPhone launch. To me that's an indicator.

/speculation

My understanding is that Samsung Released it to all of the carriers a month or so ago. So AT&T has had it, but hasn't released it to us yet.
