2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

I've decided to return my captivate before my 30 days are up. I have no confidence in Samsung releasing a GPS fix or Froyo update in a timely manner if at all. The Galaxy line is a huge dissapointment for me, I honestly believe the HTC Aria is the best AT&T Android phone and that isn't saying much.

I don't blame you, thats good for you. I too would return my captivate if my 30 days weren't up. I want a 3.8"+ screen tho so if i were staying on at&t i would probably get a wp7

It is close to the end of the month...and still no Froyo for US of A...

Yep... Here is a tweet from @samsungestabon today though, so I guess it is getting closer
Yes. Froyo is coming. We said it'd be here in 2010. I want it just as much (I have an Epic 4g). Thanks for your patience all. #wehearyou
I just hope it will fix the gps issues for everyone finally... He won't reply to my tweets about that...

If I were to root my phone now, would I still be able to download the official update for 2.2 when it comes out?

With a custom ROM no, not OTA; with a rooted stock ROM POSSIBLY. I say possibly because it should be fine but at the very least you will lose root, at the worst it will soft-brick the phone due to a conflicting file, image, or fingerprint. If that were the case (the soft brick) just use Odin to flash back to unrooted stockand grab the update then root the phone after the update. The safest bet (and my plan) is just to unroot and have a completely stock ROM to upgrade from before the update rolls out...

froyo will not likely be ota after the first update that bricked so many phones. they will probably put it out through kies but thats just a guess

'Bricked too many phones' based on what data? You can't go by this (or any other) forum, this is where people come with problems and issues - there are many, many more out there blissfully oblivious to the problems we discuss here. Someone somewhere on this forum posted a chat discussion with a Samsung rep where he said it would be an OTA update. You can't take that as gosphel, though, because it's all second hand. I've heard from many people here that simple rooting shouldn't stop the OTA at all. We'll all have to wait and see.

Im from the future and froyo is awesome it has cookies

I want cookies. :( Sucks having to wait so long for official release :( I hope it's worth the wait. If it is not, that may just be the last straw for me. I mean, I just wish we had an official DATETIME of release! Yesh!

Actually the OTA update process has a LOT less issues/complaints compared to the issues on the international SGS forum(s) updating through KIES. The issue is not the OTA process, it is Samsung's lack of ability to write usable code that works (whether Touchwiz or KIES)...

I hope 2.2 comes out thru kies as I can't ota! Since the last update when I try to update it says communication error with at&t servers! I have tried to fix this prob even talked to samsung & at&t tech support and they are useless! I have seen alot of posts of others having this same problem. So I'm hoping I can get froyo thru kies.

Whether you can "connect" to the servers or not, you should still get the notification for the update when available. I downloaded mine by checking repeatedly after it was announced, but my neighbor and friend got the JH7 update OTA and he had reflashed stock and had the "cannot connect" server issue. Once you get the notification, you should be able to just hit "update now" and go through with it.

I hope the update is not through KIES because:
1.) KIES is crappy Samsung software that has created MANY issues with the international version (as per their forums), and my (and your) odds of having a smooth update are much better with OTA
2.) With KIES the consumers are required to have computer access with the software and correct drivers (for those of us that travel a lot, this may or may not be an option)
3.) KIES also requires Windows, 'nuff said (this is not a Windows-bashing forum)

OTA is the only fair way of ensuring that all consumers of the device have equal access to the update

I agree. I run Linux and it would be very unfair if this was a KIES only update.

Yeah, same here. I do have access to Windows as I left it partitioned on the hard drive, but I run Ubuntu, UNR, Mac OSX (almost exclusively for Excel) and Fedora (and Android, of course) for my computing needs... KIES would be more of a pain for us than most- and I couldn't get it to run or even open in a Virtual Machine, Emulator, or Compatibility-layer (WINE), so yeah, straight up Linux boxes are S.O.L. in Samsung's eyes...

I want my Froyo damnit. This is ridiculous! I'm tired of my hilarious battery life and lag. Lets hope these will be fixed with the update.

If you want it that bad, root it and flash a 2.2 rom. Nobody promised you an "official" 2.2 update

Edit: If you do, please report back...

That's just terribad. Even before release we were told that it would be getting Froyo at a later date. If Froyo can fix battery, GPS, and lag problems then logic will tell us that it was a rushed phone that NEEDS Froyo. The phone may not have been out long but holding out half of the memory for the update is like saying that it would have been too much memory for people to handle.

Don't get me wrong I love the phone, but Samsung and AT&T are pulling a Microsoft; taking forever to get their ducks in a row and approve things. ;)

bullshit,, it has been announced,, and everyone stop whinning,,, start whinning after the 3rd week of december if we dont get it,,,
plus if you lag and gps is that bad, take it back for repair, as my phone is only a month old and doesnt have any of these issues,, canada on rogers
