2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

Meh if only i had the programming ability to make my own custom rom ;D I'd make it barebones and fix all the bugs

Just learning java though.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful to the dev community, I just wish quality control was more thorough before release, at that point though they won't be free of charge anymore.

I wonder why there's no business model for paid custom ROMs? The kind with lots of testing reior to release, a tech support department, and a refund policy...then again, if a multi billion dollar, multi national mega can't do it...

i have used both cognition, which had 0 bugs i could find while using it for over a month. and now on perception for a few days and the only bug i have found is haptic feedback doesnt work on the home button but the dev is working on a fix.

the roms will probably always be free, but there will never be the extensive testing before they are released that you would prefer. this is because there are dozens of roms out there, and more all the time. with a limited amount of people owning the phone, and if the roms werent free there would be very few people using these roms it really wouldnt be worth having beta testers for a rom that few would be using. the devs accept donations, release fixes often as they come up with them, and everyone using them looks for bugs. if you dont want bugs use a rom that has been around a while, read through the threads on xda and see what problems others are having. they will probably always be updated though, most will continue to be updated until something better comes out and everyone stops using it

My two cents (if you haven't already done so)...

If you have an external SD card, store your Titanium backup there. In Titanium's preferences change the backup folder name to external_sd/TitaniumBackup. This path is for use with Froyo, not Eclair.

Reason? If your phone becomes damaged you now have a "portable" backup from which to perform your restore to a new device.

Thanks for that tip, I had been manually moving my backup to my external SD card every 3 or 4 days, this will make it even easier!

You're welcome. For lurkers wondering about an external SD backup path to place in Titanium's preferences for Eclair:

sd/TitaniumBackup

My uncle works for samsung and he said froyo is dead!

lolol

That doesn't make much sense to me. The galaxy S tablet that they're releasing for the holidays comes with Froyo, why wouldn't they be able to get a decent Froyo (even if it is a bit delayed) on every galaxy S phone they have on the market?

I updated to 2.2 last night on my Captivate....

aside from having to manually rebuild the APN it wasn't bad at all.

few glitches or things of annoyance would be that I can't put the phone into silent by turning the volume down past vibrate and the keyboard seems a bit slow to drop away. The function key to change over to symbols is also smaller and can't go back and forth.

having said that, so far i'm happy with it.

I was recently on AT&T's forums and there was a user that contacted Samsung for Froyo info. I will post his conversation after the link to the source. Dem confusin', I be sayin'.

ATTN: Android 2.2 froyo update in the next few day... - AT&T Community

Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.

You are now chatting with 'Elena'
Elena: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Matthew: Hi, I have my samsung captivate connected through kies mini. My phone says it's connected but nothing is happening with kies mini software
Elena: I understand that you want to transfer the content from handset to the PC and vice versa. Am I correct ?
Matthew: no. I understand that kies mini is just for firmware upgrades only. I want kies mini to recognize my device. this is the first time I've actually got my phone not to freak out when it connects through the MTP application, and for the first time it says it's connected, but the kies software window still says "please connect your mobile phone:
Elena: You have installed Kies Mini software on the PC. Kies Mini is a simple tool that performs a firmware update for a phone. Other options that may accompany the tool are unsupported for this product.
Elena: I understand that you are trying to transfer and sync Outlook content on your PC to handset, but the application software "KIES" full version used to fulfill the requirement is not yet released for users in U.S officially at this moment and hence there is no relevant information or support available for the same.
Elena: As the option of KIES software is unavailable at this instant, we can transfer music, pictures and videos between your PC and handset using the media player option and the mass storage options.
Matthew: i'm just trying to do a firmware update...I'm not trying to do anything else that you just said
Matthew: are these pre-typed responses?
Elena: No, my typing is a bit faster than you.
Elena: May I know the firmware and basband version of the device ?
Matthew: 2.1 update 1, I897UCJH7
Elena: I see that the device is having all the latest updates installed already.
Matthew: Really.
Elena: Are you trying to install Android 2.2 ?
Matthew: Yup
Matthew: Samsung officially announced that EVERYONE WOULD HAVE THE UPDATE BY THE END OF NOVEMBER
Matthew: It's now 12/1
Elena: Unfortunately there is no update available at this time for your phone model, nor is there an estimated date of one being released. We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Elena: Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.
Elena: Samsung is working on these and we will release the software within few days. Once the update has been released by the Carrier people you will receive a notification message to install it on your handset.
Matthew: So the promise to have it to everybody by the end of november was a lie?
Elena: I really apologize for the inconvenience.
Matthew: it's outrageous
Elena: I can understand your concern and situation.
Elena: I would have surely helped , if I had any information regarding them.
Matthew: it's the only reason I bought this phone
Matthew: and it's been pushed back time and time again, until you; SAMSUNG, said it would be available to "ALL" by the end of november
Elena: As this is a basic level support we have limited access to our database. However, I suggest you to please contact our Samsung Customer Support Team. Our Galaxy handset support team at : 1-877-392-4252,Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST). They will be glad to help you with this.
Matthew: there's also a new download that was posted on the captivate product page on 11/29/2010 for an installation guide on updating the phone
Matthew: what's that about then?
Matthew: it gives us, the consumers, a step-by-step process on how to update the phone.
Elena: I am sorry, I don't have any information regarding this in my database.
Elena: I suggest you to please contact our Samsung Customer Support Team.
Matthew: ok, nevermind that. You said that the 2.2 update will be released in a few days?
Matthew: Elena: Samsung is working on these and we will release the software within few days. Once the update has been released by the Carrier people you will receive a notification message to install it on your handset.
Elena: Yes, I do obey. But we don't have the exact date of the release of the software in my database,.
Matthew: you do obey? i don't understand
Elena: Let me explain.
Matthew: i never said you didn't obey
Elena: Samsung is presently working on the software update but they require some time to release the software.
Elena: So that we can release a bug free software for the Samsung devices.
Matthew: you said within a few days. correct
Matthew: that's what you just said
Matthew: am i right?
Elena: Yes, you are correct.
Matthew: so, in summation, the 2.2 froyo update for the samsung captivate will be released in a few days?
Elena: I am a basic level agent and I have all the information that is available in my database and if you need any further please contact our next level support at 1-877-392-4252,Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST).
Matthew: please answer the question
Elena: Samsung will release for all the Android mobile phones.
Matthew: will release what?
Elena: Android 2.2 software.
Matthew: in a few days?
Elena: yes.
Matthew: how do you know that?
Matthew: if you said you had no information on the subject
Elena: I can't reveal that information in the chat session .
Matthew: it's top secret?
Elena: I am not authorized to reveal that information in chat support.
Elena: I hope you would understand my limitations.
Matthew: but you know 100%, without a doubt, that 2.2 froyo update will be released in a few days
Elena: yes, thats for sure.
Elena: Is there anything else that I can assist you with?
Matthew: Alrighty then. I'm going to post this conversation to as many forums as possible and to samsung's facebook pages to get the word out, due to the fact that there are thousands of angry customers out there, begging to know when this is going to be released
Elena: I can understand.
Elena: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. If you have a minute, please click on the blue

Basically, after like 20 minutes of arguing and fighting with "elena," Samsung said that the Froyo will be released within a few days. I take that (since AT&T is slow as f***) to mean about 2weeks.

Samsung UK said end of November (( changed date at the end of November )) Samsung USA has ONLY officially said " by end of the year." I don't get why people don't understand that.

Anyway, considering it is December and they said "by the end of the year," if they do have it out to the carriers in a few days then they stuck to their word. When the carriers release it is another story.

I'll believe it when I see it. I still don't think we'll see an official version until 2011. This "Elana" could have said anything to get him off of her back. What's the chances of contacting that service rep again, or a complaint about her, to Samsung, meaning anything?

I can attest from personal experience that both AT&T and Samsung support techs will tell you just about anything... including blatant lies that they know aren't true... just to pacify you and get you off the phone if they get tired of dealing with you.

I dont see what badgering these people is accomplishing. As she stated several times she is the bottom of the food chain support so if you want to get your hopes up and believe what she said go right on ahead and live in your world of delusions. It will be rwady when it is ready. Get on with your lives people.

I feel sorry for Elana too. she managed to give more then she should have given...you aint getting Froyo by bullying low level chat support executive....stop wating time bullying poor ATT workers and flash a leaked rom if u r so desperate and blind to read that she said

"Elena: I am a basic level agent and I have all the information that is available in my database and if you need any further please contact our next level support at 1-877-392-4252,Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST)."
"Elena: I am not authorized to reveal that information in chat support.

smh..people...you surprise me...how can u feel happy to see someone bullying poor entry level executive when even samsung CEO is not able to tell when will they have froyo...

...how can u feel happy to see someone bullying poor entry level executive...

I agree with the sentiment...for the most part. But when you speak with a support rep about random shutdowns, GPS issues or other widespread problems and they say "that's the first I've heard of it," all bets are off. I can tolerate quite a bit, but I have no tolerance for lying. If Samsung has told them to lie, then the reps are compromising their personal values and that, too, is intolerable.

Gimme a break Jack...their doing the best they can..a job is a job in this economy and they are not compromising their personal values. I'll tell you this tho-if they are lying..and this is what you term "compromising personal values"..then I can't imagine what you would term lying on a higher level in corporate or political America. Lets get some perspective here-we're talking about a firmware upgrade on a cell phone that will be all but forgotten a few years from now and works fine the way it is...yikes

Sorry, kiddo. As tempting as it is, I will not participate in a dialog with you regarding the virtues of honesty. A slippery slope awaits that would only result in mod intervention.
