2.2 is now available on Cap in canada

Your phone is quite different from a desktop. It has no moving/spinning parts. So the reasoning for turning the computer off at night for life longevity don't apply.
thank you.
finally got the update. during update either i had left room for a minute and missed a prompt or it failed, as it had a msg that update mode failed. so it asked me to boot into recovery which i had never done before but was easy and it did the update.
only thing i guess i did wrong was i did not know it would take all my customized home screens and widgets and bookmark shortcuts etc and eliminate them.
so putting and guessing where they all were is a real pain but i did it. if someone has a suggestion for a program to prevent this for future that could put them back where you had them please do so. I heard there is a new backup feature in 2.2 but does it put homescreens back?

ps cannot comment on use of 2.2 yet as just did it, although playing around with the google speak bar is pretty cool.

Wait a minute, you "tree choppers" get health-care and froyo...

you better look before you start calling the canadian dollar a peso,,

last i looked it was worth more then the greenback

universal health care is awesome,,,

and we can remove snow and keep our streets and airports open,,

and we have froyo on captivate

I guess there are 2 things I really care about in this update:

1. GPS issue
2. Corporate Wifi issue

To our lucky friends in Canada, do you guys know if any of the issues have been addressed in this update?

Just updated to 2.2 :D

It took some effort but after some reading I got it to work.

For people who are having issues I used Windows XP and samsung kies 1.53 from a torrent site as 2.0 clearly cant find the captivate yet.

You do have to follow a bit of instructions though.

1.After you got kies running plug in your phone(make sure your on tw_launcher and usb set to firmware upgrade).
2. Allow kies to find n connect your phone, once it does select upgrade firmware.
3. Save your contacts etc, n let the download process go.
4. Once download is done it will say updating n to not disconnect your phone. You will notice you update bar going no where. Here you gotta turn off your phone, unplug the usb, hold the volumeup/down till you see a yellow n black android dude shoveling then plug in your phone.
5. You'll notice on your computer the update going through
6. leave you phone alone till your back on your locked screen and your media card is all loaded up. (may take 5-10 mins dont worry just leave it alone till it happens)

I tried on 2 computers with win7 64bit home and Ultimate and had issues. Read that the win7 32bit users are doing it hassle free. Clearly here winXP is hassle free as well. The hardest part on the upgrade was getting samsung kies 1.53 :D

Hope this helps others stuck on 2.1, I will give a review on GPS etc in a couple days (though my gps has been pretty good). So far only thing I noticed is the browser is much faster, as well some visual changes, only been on it for an hour.

Edit: Win7 64bit Ultimate works no issues with Kies 1.53

has anyone tried doing the upgrade through XP Mode on one of these systems? I only ask because I just recently finished upgrading all my home computers to Windows 7 64-bit - D'oh!
:o

I use windows xp and have kies on my system and i did the update yesterday. I like alot of what it added like the home desk top and the google voice works amazingly.

Re gps? I had usable gps before although most times to get a lock on me took a few minutes.
Yesterday after the update i hit google maps and it found my location..in.........4 seconds!
no extensive use but so far the gps finds me quickly within seconds. I did find two issues though.
1. the battery usage went way up for me. I did nothing out of the ordinary and my phone was warning me by 5pm that it was out of juice..whereas i used to get a good full days use out of it.
2. i am experiencing some slow movement and lag from screens to screens. Some programs are slow. several times in putting back my shortcuts to apps that went missing i would click and hold a spot and choose apps and then....nothing...just sitting there for about 15 seconds before suddenly it would open up. so lagging is not fun. not sure why its doing that. i would definitely not say it is faster with this update so far i would say the opposite.

Even following all instructions to wipe former Kies from my comp, and downloading version 1.5.3, Kies will STILL not recognize my Captivate. WTH!

I'm running Win 7 64.
I have had multiple version of Kies on my machine and they uninstalled fine.
My computer had not trouble recognizing my phone.

I'm going to suspect that your problem isn't kies installation related.

I just upgraded another buddies captivate but used my computer which has win7 64bit Ultimate. No issues at all if you follow mine n several other peoples instructions.

I installed the update with a few snags, I followed the post here.

Every time I started the updated process, the updated module crashed on my main computer, so I installed Kies on my Gateway notebook, and it well very well.

A few notes:
- It may take a few times before Kies recognize the phone. in my case, I would say about 1 time for 3 tries. I tried using different USB ports, with a hub, without hub, there was nothing I could do to improve the recognition.

- Even when it works, Kies takes a long time before finding the phone, I would say 2-3 minutes at least.

- When you need to get the phone in download mode, do so after the pop-up message (You'll see it, you can't miss it), but do it quickly. I had to try twice before it worked. including the many times Kies would not find the phone, so it can get a bit frustrating.

The update itself went smoothly. I did not have to backup anything, every application I had is still there. I had to reinstall and reconfigure a few widgets, but that's it.

I just tried the GPS, and I got a fix in about 10 seconds, which is even faster than with the previous rom.

Right now, I would say that I am glad I waited to get the official ROM. It took a long while, but everything seems to run very smoothly. We'll see if it is still true in the long run.

Argh... Nothing but troubles when upgrading... This is annoying :(

I finally get a version of Kies that can see my phone, then I click "upgrade" and it won't connect to the upgrade server... This is so annoying.

BTW, how large is the upgrade file? As in how much data is it actually downloading?

Couldnt say how big the upgrade file is but if you follow my instructions it should go hassle free. Maybe uninstall your current kies and download the kies 1.53 from isohunt.com.

Are you using Win 7 64bit? I know some people have had success, but I couldn't get it to work consistantly on 2 different PC's so I used Kies 1.5.3 that Samsung put under the software tab on the website

Captivating Brilliance - Samsung Galaxy S Captivate? (SGH-i896) - All Phones - Mobile Phones | SAMSUNG

for the Cap to download and ran it off an older laptop with Win XP and it worked perfect and I upgraded mine and the wifes Cap one after another.

Yeah, thats the same version of Kies that I am using right now. 2.0 (or whatever..) didn't work at all...

On this computer I am using Windows XP SP2. When I am home I will try on my Windows Vista, 64bit machine. Unfortunately both computers I have at home are Vista 64bit.

EDIT: The error I get is "No Response from server."
This error pops up immediately as I start the upgrade, after it prompts me to backup my contacts.

So my question for you lucky official 2.2 folks: Does voice dialing over bluetooth headset work? I don't mean using some 3rd party program, I mean like it should, ie, press the headset button, tell the phone who to dial and it does. That was my second biggest concern with my Captivate since I fell for the 'Voice dialing will be supported in 2.2 coming out at the end of the month' back in September schtick. The first was GPS, of course..

If you still havnt upgraded check out my guide in the tips n tricks section.

i finally decided to do a factory reset after upgrading to 2.2 because 2.2 made my phone worst in terms of battery life. it would tell me to charge at 5 pm, which little use cause when im at work, we're not allowed to use phones. i did the factory reset yesterday and it more than doubled my battery life. with a full day's use with a phone call done on speaker, and some minor surfing, came home at 10 pm, and still had 66%. which is remarkable
